This is a new and improved version of the original Maguire Airport video. It contains shots of the abandoned Maguire Airport in Ocoee, FL. This new video contains some aerial shots of the airport and some Google Earth images showing the airport being erased from the face of the earth by new development until all trace of it is gone. This small country airport was located 12nm due west of Orlando Executive Airport (ORL) at 2600 S Maguire Road in Ocoee, FL It was surrounded by orange groves. The video was shot in 1990 before the airport disappeared completely and now there is nary a trace to be found. The land is now occupied by the Plantation Grove Shopping Center and surrounded by homes. The airport had a north/south 2,400 ft. turf runway, Runway 36/18. Some of my best flying days were spent at this airport under the watchful eye of Harold Maguire. FTHVN #53

What a great video, brings back quite a few memories. Took my first sailplane lesson out there 7/31/82 with Bob Burbank, I was 14 at the time. The flight school was Citrus Soaring, they had 2 Schweizer 2-33's and a 90hp Luscombe towplane. I soloed but never did finish up getting my glider certificate. The last time I flew over Maguire was in 1991, I was training for my private single engine. In 1975 my dad took me out to Longcoy airport a little N of Maguire, that sparked my interest in flying.

I finished up my private pilots license here after college in 1971. My instructor was a former WWII Army instructor named Wilber Stokes. Bob Stovall managed the office. He was a B-17 pilot. Freddy Somma, followed by Hal Cordy were the mechanics. Highland Wall Air Sales was the name of the flight business there in the beginning. When Harold Maguire's son Micky was killed in a Piper Apache on a 36 departure, he remained the business Micky's Air Service in honor of his son. Dave Pearlman, an Orlando businessman, purchased the airport from Harold and kept all of his antique aircraft out there. Some of the best times in my life were spent at this airport. In the summer months, when off from teaching school from 1972 until 1975, I was the "line boy". I fueled up aircraft, worked in the office and mowed the runway. Maguire contributed to me being a pilot now for 51 years and counting. I will never forget the great people from there who touched my life then and now.

An absolutely fantastic memory of the airport! I was there a little after you when I was hired in 1978 as a flight instructor. I don’t remember Wilber Stokes. In fact, when I started, there were no other instructors except a few came out on rare occasion. Sue Rankellior (sp?) was one I remember. I remember Bob Stovall and Herold flying an abandoned (drug runner) Convair off a levee down around Okeechobee, bringing it to Kissimmee for the sheriff’s office. Mechanics Freddy Somma and Hal Cordy were obviously gone and had been replace by Gerry Deitz when I arrived in ‘78. While I knew the business name was Mickey’s Air Service (in honor of Herald’s son), I did not know it was originally called Highland Wall Air Sales. Thank you for that nugget of history! I do remember Dave Pearlman. I believe he leased a C-182 to MAC as I flew it often. I watched with a degree of melancholy as the airport was slowly erased by development. Just glad I had the foresight to go out and videotape the premises before it was gone forever. I was a young man when my aviation career began, and the Maguire airport help to mold me into what I am today. I’ve lived in North Carolina for 25-years and when I hang up my headset for the last time, it will most likely be here. I couldn’t agree more about the people and times at Maguire. Great people and great times without a doubt. Thank you sir, for sharing this!

Years after it was abandoned all us kids nearby thought it was haunted and was a teen gang headquarters. The ultimate test of bravery was to go in and explore. We did and I was scared out of my mind the whole time. Long before that when it was still open they used to allow folks to watch the planes land. I went with my dad and poppop circa 1984. They were plane enthusiasts and I watched them watch the planes land.

WOW just WOW...I am so glad I came across this video, at 42 yrs. old now what memories this brings back. I did my soft/short field training there and bob white (x61) north of there. I trained out of air orlando (korl) and flight test date was 8/18/88. I can't find any of my old jax. sectionals but X30 is what we used for log book but wasn't this also called orlando west on the chart, am I wrong about that. GREAT WIDEO.

I loved this airport! I got there in my very first motor vehicle, a 1948 Stinson 108-3 that I bought in the spring of 1978 when I was 18 years old. I would fly over from Orlando and Mr. Maguire would let me mow the runway an pump gas in exchange for putting gas in my plane. I was only a student pilot until June of 78 when I got my private pilots license. Did my unusual attitudes with a lady instructor there, I don't remember her name. I remember Mr. Maguiregot an old bamboo bomber that he was planning to restore shortly before I left. I left for upstate NY in august of 78 and heard a few months later that a friend of mine had died in a crash there on take off in an overloaded 172. All great memories except for the last.

Probably saw you there! I was there from 79' to 80'. The instructor you remember was likely Susan Rankelior (sp?) She was leaving around the time I was coming in.

Flyin Brian Yes that was her, in my logbook it just had her first initial and last name. I'm sorry to see that X30 is gone, it was such a neat little airstrip. My Stinson was dark blue with a wide white stripe going down the side. the paint had been stripped of the cowling in prep for painting. It is still flying, the current owner is in Texas.

My grandfather, Hugh Grimes, kept a couple of his planes out there. That is until some careless individuals chartered them and wrecked them. Great memories I have of flying out of there with my dear ol' "Paw-Paw". How I miss him and the Maguire airport, and those flights. I remember going out to the conference table and playing with the old punch card business phone as a tike when no-one was watching.

Sadly the old days of places we've been to or worked at no longer exist. I lived fairly close to an airstrip that was used by those needing an locally airstrip to land and refuel along with those that lived in the area, and all the memories I had watching planes land and take off from the airport was fantastically fun to see. Sadly homes now sit where the runway used to be. At least I'll always have those memories of the fun I had watching and listening. That's why I'm an active scanner radio listener

Wow, thanks for sharing. I live in what is now Wesmere off of Maguire Rd, a little North of the end of where the end of the landing strip was. And I shop in Publix, which sits where the old Maguire Airport was. Didn't know the complete history until I saw your video.

Thanks for the nice comment. The PT-22 was owned by one of the Burch's, but I don't remember the first name. You are likely correct on "Billy." (You probably saw the airplane in the video.) By 1981 I was no longer flying out of Maguire as I started working as a line pilot with a FAR 135 operation at ORL. Thanks for watching!!

thanks for this video. as I posted on the short version, I remember riding my bicycle to this airport from Pine Hills almost every weekend when I was 14 or so. There were a bunch of old planes owned by a guy who had a little naked man painted on the tails, which later turned up in kissimmee at tom reilly's museum. Is the PT-22 in the video the one owned by Billy Burch?

This was a small grass airport located 12 nm west of the ORL vortac. You must have been at MCO around the time the Air Force was turning the base over to the city.

@@FlynBrian I took my flight training there, in '71 or '72. My flight instructor was an Air Force hotshot fighter pilot, who had previously taught the Laotian AF recruits to fly, in WWII surplus AT-6's. Had gun camera video of a dogfight with a MIG he shot down (speed's no match for maneuverability and training). He bought an AT-6 while I was taking the lessons and let an inexperienced pilot take her up. She tore the wing off on an orange tree. What a great time, in my life! Lessons were only $30 each, including Cessna 150 rental, supposedly for a half-hour, but Mr. Maguire never paid much attention to the clock. I remember the first time my instructor turned the ship over to me, for a landing. That 2400ft strip looked like a postage stamp, from 5000ft! I thought sure I was either going to clip an orange tree or fail to stop before running into the ones at the end of the runway! Thanks, for posting!

I remember how white-knucled (as he would call it) that I would get the first few times I went with him, (especially when a couple we're during bad weather) mostly at take off. For some reason, that first big drop in an airpocket made me a little uneasy as a tike (2-4 yrs. old) , but "Paw-Paw would start putting a pack of Fig Newtons back there to occupy me (seeing how I loved food as much as flying).

@abcpilot The airport started life as the "Maguire Airport" after Harold Magure, original owner and operator of the field. Later it became knows as "Orlando West," so your recollection is correct. Thanks for watching!

@Ameffe100 If you have Google Earth key in coordinates 28 31 54.44 N, 81 32 24.71 W in the "Fly To" bar. Otherwise, it was located south of Ocoee, FL, and north of Windermere, FL, northeast of the intersection of Maguire Road, Moore Road. There is a shopping center in the site now. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

@TomeElly3 So you are the one that was messing up the buttons on our phones! Only kidding of course. I remember Hugh. Although I am not familiar with the details, it seems like he owned a couple of Cessna 150's that were leased to the airport for cable patrol and gas-line patrol. (Mickey's Air Service had contracts with AT&T and Fla Gas to perform aerial inspection.) The airport also had several planes for rental and certainly some of these were your granddad’s. Thanks for watching!

Later it wouldn't ever bother me ever again. How I wish I could have been around more to go flying with him in my older and adult years. Maybe someday, if I ever get wealthy, I can try for MY pilot's license, and fly with him in memory.

Unfortunately I don't know exactly when the airport shut down. I left in 1981. The video I shot was in March 1990 and the runway was still clearly defined. In fact it looks like it was mowed up through the end of the last season since there is no overgrowth. An educated guess would be the last airplane left the airport in 1989. Try going to Google and type in "Maguire airport" and look for the "Abandoned and Little Known Airports" link for more info.

I remember the Longcoy airport! It was at a bend in Silver Star Rd where Silver Bend Ave is. It was very short (something like 1,500') with powerlines at the end of the runway. Long gone now. Thanks for watching!
