Abandoned Railroad & Abandoned Locomotive Isolated On Abandoned Coal Mine Branch In West Virginia!

Abandoned coal mine spur with abandoned tipples and locomotive stranded miles from the Norfolk Southern mainline on a short piece of private track. Railroad track being removed with railway signal still lit and this locomotive can't go anywhere. A short piece of track is still in place with several railroad cars sitting on it near the main line and another piece is still in place with this poor locomotive stranded in the middle of nowhere. This abandoned railroad line is west of Matewan, West Virginia in the heart of what was a major coal mining area. I show the buildings that hundreds of people worked in. Track removal is still going on with the switch still in place and a small piece of track being used to stage cars for track removal. Sections of welded rail are still waiting removal next to the thick gravel roadbed. Google Maps still shows the track in place and both railroad signals along this spur are turned on red and yellow. The public crossing on WV 49 still has the crossing signals and crossing shanty. The coal company closed with numerous large buildings still in place and thousands of acres going back to nature. I came here to see this line and another coal line on the east side of Matewan. I found both of them recently removed. This part of West Virginia has abandoned railroad lines all over the place. Some of them are being turned into rail trails. Filmed on August 5, 2021.

I love that old EMD GP30, it breaks my heart to think they would scrap it! That's my all time favorite locomotive! I love the styling GM put into them. L&N used to run alot of them through my hometown when I was growing up, I guess thats why I like them so much! Great video! Thanks for sharing Jawtooth!

I mentioned this on another thread, but I see a somewhat crooked attempt to add a new reporting mark over the old logo. Perhaps if we're lucky, some railroad museum will hire a trucker with a low-boy and a crane to lift it up and tow it away to their yard.

I see in bone valley in polk County they us those G P 30 as slugs for dual power pulling those heavy trains to port of Tampa for round trips back to the mines

Probably not abandoned. Most likely still owned by an investor or two, with liens owed to a bank somewhere. This "abandoned" RR stuff is assets on a ledger to the finance folks.

That GP30 was built as SOU 2598 in October, 1963. Awesome video. I had a friend from up that way years ago and we rode our bikes up there from Knoxville. We went up through North Matewan to get to the house. Lots of _good_ people up that way then. I'd live there right now. Awesome video as always, Brian. You have spoiled us a little lately but you can spoil us some more, I think. 😉🚂

The GP30 was one of the last locomotives available with a high hood, and it's a rare combination. Problem is: who is willing to pay to recover and preserve it? Have any high hood GP30's been preserved?

There were a bunch of signal lights that stayed on for years after the bankruptcy on the Penn Central line that became the bike trail in Loveland, Ohio. There was one in particular by Nisbet Lumber in Loveland that was on from 1974 to the time they pulled the rails around 1980.

Excellent find. My mother’s side of the family were all coal miners/workers in WV. None of us followed into that because it was a hard and dangerous line of work and quite frankly we all wanted out of West Virginia. We love the state, we are forever Mountaineers but it is a hard life a we all wanted to explore other opportunities that just are not available in the state. It still makes me feel sad to see this but I lived it and coal is dirty and will kill everything eventually with Mercury and many other poisonous ☠️ things that result from mining, including arsenic and even nitrogen oxides. We have had Parkinson’s, lung disease and Alzheimer’s in the family that stayed longest. I wish coal could make a comeback but really in all honesty the answer is to get other industry and jobs back into Appalachia because the people will work hard and are much smarter than the stereotypes of us hillbillies. I have degrees from two very highly regarded universities and all my brothers have at least Bachelor’s degrees but we were Blessed and very lucky. So many just don’t get the chance. We were very fortunate. Love those mountains though, still in my blood. That yellow signal still on is an absolutely classic find, no tracks but the signal is on….maybe only in Bloody Mingo county.

The rail marked as “do not take”, might be left there as a storage spot when needed elsewhere. After seeing some recent train derailments, might be handy to have ready-made rail ready to place , when needed.

Truly sad as this place was hopping back in 2001. At that time besides their own mine many trucks drove here from smaller mines to have their coal processed. The NS division supt had a large map of all coal mines in the area circa 1966 and it was mind-blowing and even more interesting was that numerous lines were left in place. He stated there was exploration or some mines were not played out and rather than haggle with regulatory agencies or adjacent landowners just leave it in place. I remember there was a signal in Waukesha WI in the middle of a newly paved parking lot with a lit but marooned red signal that guarded the former CNW Xing across the SOO main and it stayed there almost a year. Chessie is trying to sniff out where the people food is hidden.

That picture probably shows another set of tracks running around the warehouse past the engine and those tracks would have gone under a taller building that does not exist anymore. The taller building that does not exist was probably the load out building. where are the railroad ties are stacked up is probably where that second set of tracks ran.

And I would guess it was dead before that. Note it has no ditch lights. Reporting are are for American Refining ( Amerimex Rail ). I would have thought they would have moved the loco before pulling the rails but it may have truck damage.

Having sat idle at Massey Energy's Sprouse Creek loadout for several years, the former Southern hi-hood now sports new reporting marks on the cab, and (according to security personnel on site) has been receiving repairs to be prepared for sale and transport to the Pacific Northwest. But for tonight, the unit rests at the dormant loadout just east of Sprigg, on the former Alma Branch, waiting for it's next assignment.

I knew I recognized the font style of the locomotive's numbers and that got me curious of this locomotives origins. It turns out that AMRX #2598 is an EMD GP30 locomotive. It was originally built for the Southern Railroad as SOU #2598 in October of 1963. Sad to see this locomotive sitting here abandoned.

Great Video! That is a neat spot for sure. Ancient GP30 high hood left to rot and a coal mine behind it. Too bad its closed. The CPL lit up with no tracks is eerie for sure. And speaking of the Erie back in the mid 1990's I was west of Hornell NY on the ex Erie Mainline and there were massive washouts and Conrail didn't care, they just left it. I remember a spot where the tracks were washed out for a couple hundred feet dangling in the air over the water near an old Erie signal still illuminated with obviously no trains. Too bad I wasn't shooting photographs yet. Thanks Jaw Tooth for bringing back that memory.

The guy who runs that channel has clearly stated on multiple occasions that he intends to use trackmobiles or possibly a small industrial switcher such as a GE 50 tonner. Why would he be interested in a non-working road locomotive that makes no sense at all for his business?

Hello Jaw Tooth I know of an area of West Virginia from Norfolk Western days in the 1920-1935. NW built a bypass of their old line from Nagutuck WV to Kenova WV it ran thur Lenore, Dingess, Dunlow, Genoa, Wayne then Kenova. There are spurs at Wayne and Nagatuck to serve the coal mines at the time till East Lynn and Nagatuck mines closed. Between those points the state was able to pave those miles in between some of the bridges are still in use and two tunnels connect Dingess and Lenore one car can use the tunnel headlights on to warn oncoming traffic

Another very cool Jawtooth production! Thanks Jawtooth! The coal power plants are disappearing for cleaner power! The coal plant in Sheboygan WI will be decommissioned by the end of the year. Union Pacific will lose a major customer once it closes! Would love to catch some video of the swapping of coal cars while the trains still run!

Alliant power has said they were gonna close down the edgewater plant for the last 10 yrs... same with com ed Waukegan plant... i will believe it's actually closing when we stop running trains!

Jaw Tooth, that piece of coalmine siding you visited was once the “mainline” around the mountain following the stream until a tunnel was bored through the mountain. The signal is of N&W origin, fixed approach aspect. It should have two amber lights lit on the 45-degree UQ diagonal.

Google also shows the track still in place on the branch on the east side of Matewan. It is gone also. I had planned on filming that one and got bummed out when I saw the tracks gone

Sadly, this mining district in the US has met the same fate as in the UK (Wales) and Germany (Rhein - Ruhr district). The last coal pit in Germany (Zeche "Prosper Haniel" near Bottrop) was closed as late as 2018! As about that abandoned red engine: problem is that large parts of it have been taken off and disappeared somewhere, maybe for scrap, so chances are very little that someone might rebuild it. 8:00: Thank you for that close - up on a piece of rail as it pretty clearly shows how the rails are fastened (actually: nailed!) to the sleepers. Really different over here in Germany; what we have here are screw-in tapped bolts for the base plate (4 of them, the sleepers are accordingly pre - drilled) plus two clamps and two bolts for holding down the rails. This works for wooden sleepers. If concrete sleepers are used, the fastening mechanism is different. Quite interesting here are reports about the construction of the new ICE high - speed train lines.

They did the same thing to TTI 245 in Lake City TN. Pulled the rails in front and behind the engine and since then it's been torn apart and the only thing worth having on it is the Bell that still has P&LE paint on it and I think that the number was 2808. THANKS for the post.

The rails were removed in front of and behind the loco. Only way to get her out now is with a tractor and heavy haul flatbed.

AMRX- American Refining/Amerimex Rail. I looked it up. This was probably left behind because it has friction bearing wheels. These are not allowed in class 1 tracks anymore and would take tons if crane time to convert to roller bearings.

Pretty sure these are the standard Class 1 roller bearings. Look at the trucks. They look like your typical EMD Blomberg trucks.

Hey Jaw this is a rare GP-30 , EMD GP30 was a 2,250 hp (1,680 kW) four-axle B-B diesel locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois between July, 1961 and November, 1963, The GP30 was also the only 30 Series locomotive in production, as there was no SD30 ever produced. 908 were built. The GP30 was also available in a B unit, which was purchased solely by Union Pacific. My railroad thru here was C & E I RR and they had 3 of them

Loco more than probably abandoned due to the cost of having to move it by road because it cannot be towed out on rails due to the type of axle bearings it has being bushings rather than rollerbearings.

The signal is spooky. I once saw one on in the middle of nowhere on the old Milwaukee Road Pacific Extension in Montana. About 14 years later.

When I see a scene like this I always wonder did the engineer stop the train there because the shift was over with intentions on coming back the next day or did the company shutter when he reported for work the next day, something happened hmmm.

Without knowing how many miles are on that engine, it's hard to know if it's usable. One recent president really had it in for the coal industry and pretty much killed it here in PA.

Miles have little to nothing to do with it. The biggest thing to look for are cracks in the frames.

Basically you go by engine hours like a forklift or terminal tractor instead of miles

That locomotive couldn't be moved on Class-1 railroads to be sold at auction because it has friction bearings. I saw another video (from ccrx2400 - Cumberland Mine Railroad) that explained about it and how the only other alternatives are by truck over the roads or by special lowboy flatcar or by an expensive bearing conversion or finally by a temporary truck swapout. The cranes required to lift these guys alone are hard to come by.

What a Shame to See that Engine just sitting there and like you said probably going to be scrapped. That Engine appears to look like to be in good shape l know l sure would love to have it. Yeah you can thank the Demonrats Party for the Coal Mines and Coal Train's shutting down and No longer running. Awesome video as always
