Historic Abandoned Railroad Being Restored Part 1
In 1926 Seaboard Air Line Railroad built these train tracks to Miami and eventually Homestead, Florida. At one point, they even connected to the FEC Overseas Railway en route to the Florida Keys and eventually Key West. During the 1970s Sunshine Industrial Park was buzzing with rail activity and it just so happened that at the same time I-95 was being built South toward Miami. This industry spur was a victim of progress because it was located right in the way of where one of the highway columns was supposed to be located. Needless to say the traffic engineers didn't care about the tracks and just placed right smack in the middle of it. They severed it and immediately it became abandoned never to be used again. The railroad crossing here only has cross bucks and I'm pretty sure it never sports crossing gates or signals and much less a cantilever because it was lightly used. Eventually SAL became SCL Seaboard Coast Line then Seaboard System and finally CSX in 1986 which it still is to this day. Nowadays, the main line is used by tri rail Amtrak and CSX. Join me for some history and archaeology as we witness this industry spur being restored in this video!

I believe that freight ultimately will save rail routes in South Florida because politicians there absolutely hate anything having to do with railroads. On the other hand, they love cement and asphalt. The lobbyists are strong in South Florida. Freight is the only thing that will save rail lines in the south, unless Brightline gets involved. Both would be great if working together.

When the last load of rocks is shipped from the Krome rock pit, the line will be removed with such speed that an observer will get whiplash. My opinion, and I hope that I am wrong, is that SR 874 will be built. MDX wants an expressway in South Miami Dade County very badly and SR 836 is being fought against very hard while the other highway is favored. This will wipe out the CSX S Line corridor and leave Homestead without rails. A condition for the 874 extension should be the rebuilding of the FEC line from Oleander to Florida City in order to counterbalance the elimination of the other line. The people along South Dixie Hwy want rail service anyway and not bus service.
@gravelydon7072
@gravelydon7072 2 жыл бұрын
@@armandoperez7967 Not so sure the line to Krome will die that easy. Cemex has a distributorship there. The line south of Sterling, yeah, it only is an amount of time I think before we see the scrappers coming in for everything South of SW 137th Ave. And if that happens, you'll never see any kind of rail service to Florida City or Homestead. The County Commissioners hates the South end of it. Always have. Because Miami wants to run everything in the county. Redland wanted to break free of the County and have its own police and zoning boards. Miami said no. We don't want you controlling your own destiny.

FYI, a teaching moment: The creosote is applied through a pressurizing process similar to pressure treated lumber. If you cut a crosstie so you can see a cross-section you can see how the creosote penetrates several inches into the crosstie. That is why you see a lot of cross ties that the middle has rotted out. Once the tie splits and water can get to the middle, that is untreated, because the creosote does not penetrate all the way to the middle, it begins to rot. Most cross ties manufactured in the last 40 to 50 years or so has the metal plate on the ends to help prevent the cross ties from splitting /cracking. Those plates are similar to those used when building prefabricated or stick built cross braced roofing rafter / ceiling joist assemblies. The plate has a whole lot of triangle shaped spikes that are derived / pressed into the ends.

Hey there Dr. JONES: Tell the eager audience how is it they revamp the road bed and rails but left the crossing untouched, nothing but asphalt supporting buried rail and the center holds a discontinued switch rail. Look at those flangeways, they don't look too good either, wouldn't take much for a set of wheels to jump up & derail. If you smell the stench of petroleum, you found creosote, I'll bet those ties are soaked with it. Hope this day, finds you well. If you're going to follow these lines , then we should convert your truck with a High-Railer set up. Sterling- P.R. Department

This is very interesting! Is this part of that rail line that you visited last year where they were ripping out some tracks and they had a trench dug in the ground where they had removed the rails? If I remember correctly, the work was being done near where that bridge support for I-95 was sitting in between the two tracks. Thank you for finding this re-habilitated track that appears to be in use now. This is a great find! Now you are going to have to stake out this line to capture a train on it. I am looking forward to seeing Part 2 of your trip further along this spur where you saw the boxcar.

Yes sir, Thomas, it is the same one I visited last year where they were ripping out tracks and dug a trench. That is quite an idea about staking out the line for a train, I might just do that! That certainly was a step above a new rail here and there and a smattering of ballast.. Since the rest of the Xing is smooth they can leave the nipped off rail in place. I did notice the Xing where the mesh gate is disappeared as well as the small asphalt lot across the tracks. I look forward to Part 2 to see who needs rail service. I'm not sure if Florida DOT or the county put money towards this. In Wisconsin siding upgrades qualify for funding but tend to be for unit grain train loading

E wysocki 15238 48 train currently in motel 6 room 125 211 beechem drive at lorish Rd crafton pgh pa 15205 sep 27 2022 hi rail road 82 loved the rail road crossing being restored it's about time all these rail road crossings being abandoned or no longer in use is sad because trains delivered pop my Pepsi or coca cola or Sprite or Sunkist or food like pregrrsso soup ; pasta for those of you who love speghetti like I do or lasagna or pizza or stuffed shells ; plus your furniture beds ; kitchen sinks ; bathroom tubs or sinks or shower bars or benches ; or tables ; furnaces ; windows ; doors this is only half of what these giants do ; plus transportation ; so just stay out their way off tracks you won't get hit and never have to die this way or lose limbs ; walking on tracks or driving through gates or biking is uncalled for plus you need a mental health evaluation and to lose your driver's license for good plus a jail sentence if you do this ! Look ; listen ; and stop for all trains at all times and live thank you 😀

And its welded rail. They must have a very big customer to invest that much money in the track.

That would be Century Metals my friend. They own 3 buildings on this block so you can have an idea of their operation. Hope all is well with you, C!

E wysocki 15238 48 train currently in motel 6 room 125 beechem drive at lorish Rd ; crafton pgh pa 15205 Sep 12 2022 hi rail road 82 how are you doing ? Loved the rail road crossing at Florida warehouse being restored at west and south ; nice that one crossing is coming back to life ; is the factory reopening or something else ? Well the only thing crossbucks no signals to make noise or lights to see or gates to come down ; not that all people listen anyway ; some do and some don't ; let's put it this way some people will live today to do dishes or get their shower ; or cook ; or wash clothes these are the people who wait on train smart people ; some people will die or lose limbs or never do dishes again or get to enjoy the sunrise or see another Christmas or fourth of July ; or say I love you or say goodbye to their families or friends ; trains don't see or hear or have feelings ; they are a form or transportation or they haul heavy loads long distances ; so look ; listen : and stop for all trains at all times and live ; don't be stupid like these people ! 😀

Don't know if you know it but that switch lead to a different spur that ran SW from it. If you go to NW 13th Ave. you might find the the rails are still there at 4over.com building. The rails are still in place at NW 15th Ave. last I knew. Also there was I believe another spur that came off at Grain Machinery and crossed NW 163 Dr there to also go West. Acorn Packaging building at NW 15th would have been the last place it crossed a road.

So you're saying that the spur removed at the grade is still there at the 4over.com building?
