This camp was constructed in the late 1930s in the woods of southwestern Rhode Island. It was built under the Recreational Demonstration Area (RDA) program, a part of President Roosevelt's New Deal during the Great Depression. Camps like this were developed to utilize underused agricultural land for recreational purposes. The goal was to provide outdoor recreation to benefit people of lower and middle incomes. Camps consisted of a mess hall, an office, and an infirmary, and cabins around the perimeter. All that remains of this camp's main hall is the foundation and fireplace. The remaining buildings are scattered in the quiet forest, slowly decaying and returning to nature. The original water tower still stands tall, now hidden amongst the trees. Some time in the late 1970's this camp was closed and left abandoned. Once home to around 75 campers at a time, only the occasional hiker will stop by now. There are no plans to rebuild this summer camp.

I went to camp here at 9-11 years old in the 60's. It made my summers, arts and crafts, swimming, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, games, nature walks and singing in the mornings. Except for the time I was stung by a bunch of yellow jackets, it was all good. Great volunteer counselors. I still have their photos.

That's a great video thank you so much! I went there as a young child during the 50s. It was a great relief from living in the housing projects in Providence. Too bad they didn't Continue using it for disadvantaged youth like me. It was a fabulous escape from a tough situation.

Crazy how those trees have surrounded the water tower. At first, when I saw the bases I thought it was going to be a fire watch tower. Nice find. Just seems as if peoples idea of a break has changed and these places became surplus to requirements. it's a pity because it would be a great place to get away and just relax.

I'm sure there are many more camps just like this scattered through New England. The plan when this was first established was to build a series of affordable camps throughout the northeast. It's just that finding them is the hard part.

Thank you for highlight the historical value of abandoned facilities across New England. I’m absolutely hooked on your series! I have a location idea, the John Hunt House in East Providence. Currently the house/mill is used by the EP historical society but in the past, the grounds have been used for firefighter training and oddly enough a small amusement park behind the home. I recall exploring the area in late middle school and being able to still see reminiscent of the carousel markers.

Hey thanks for watching! The John Hunt House sounds interesting, especially with the amusement park. Thanks for the heads up - I'll have to check it out next time I'm in EP.

I believe this camp was part of the civilian conservation corps (CCC) back in the 30s they were responsible for building most of the trails and fire roads through there.

Jason where on the shelter trail is this? My 11 year old video game kid wants to actually go on a hike to explore this place. I'm familiar with the trail and have walked a couple sections but its a decent loop
