This camp was constructed in the late 1930s in the woods of southwestern Rhode Island. It was built under the Recreational Demonstration Area (RDA) program, a part of President Roosevelt's New Deal during the Great Depression. Camps like this were developed to utilize underused agricultural land for recreational purposes. The goal was to provide outdoor recreation to benefit people of lower and middle incomes. Camps consisted of a mess hall, an office, and an infirmary, and cabins around the perimeter. All that remains of this camp's main hall is the foundation and fireplace. The remaining buildings are scattered in the quiet forest, slowly decaying and returning to nature. The original water tower still stands tall, now hidden amongst the trees. Some time in the late 1970's this camp was closed and left abandoned. Once home to around 75 campers at a time, only the occasional hiker will stop by now. There are no plans to rebuild this summer camp.
