Hi Mat, you are a recent discovery, I have just binge watched you GDMBR and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have now put that route on my "to do list". I am pleased you mentioned the European GD route, would love to see you do that one. Myself and a few old buddies started doing 3 day rides a few years back. The first one was the Coast 2 Coast (Workington to Sunderland), the Scottish C2C (Annan to Edinburgh), The Sandstone way (Berwick to Hexham), Coast and Castles (Tynemouth to Edinburgh). Last year we did a 3 day section of the Pennine Bridle way (Settle to Kirkby Stephen - very challenging!) and this June we are doing another section, Matlock to Hebden Bridge. We tend to stay in YHA but fancy giving the bike packing a go soon. Keep up the great content!

One bit of advice i can offer to help you always enjoy your trips rides etc. If you don't feel like going, don't go otherwise you may end up not enjoying the ride and gradually you'll start to dislike cycling, go when you feel up to it, well done btw

As mentioned Mat I am in on the EDT in August, bike and equipment is ready ;-)

Nice video Mat. Sometimes you just don’t feel it and going home was probably the right thing to do. The new bike looks great and I’ll be getting something similar I think, along with a van to get away more. There must be lots of weird and interesting stories out there and it’s a good way of perhaps doing a route you may not have considered otherwise. Good to see you using the Aeropress the proper way! 😂 I do the same!👍

Somedays our hearts just aren't in the effort. Especially when it is a Plan B or C. Or have another story to tell. You continued on in that time and still played to your interests. I have done the same hiking. I had a major hike in Yellowstone NP with another hiker. On the trip over, the other had to back out. Rather than solo, I split the ten days up doing two smaller wilderness trips on National Forest Wilderness around the East side of YNP with a rest day in Cody WY in between. No permits and no fixed itinerary like in YNP. Still got a dose of Grizzlies and other wildness and was some best hikes of a life. [disclaimer: I live about four hours from the East Entrance to YNP] The Kona looks like a smash!!

Van rattle: Easy fix Bert, just fill the van with expanding foam! sorted. ( Not as extreme as scraping) 😉 We all have days sometimes when you just don't feel like riding, it even happened to me recently. ..... Offer I made about guided trails for my locality stands, if your looking for new places. 👍

Very, very unusually for me I've been having a lot of 'not feeling it' days for cycling (and it's not the weather) , so I'd say it's natural for this to happen periodically 🤔🤞

Sometimes you just have days where you don't want to do something, even if you love it! Thinking about it though, was it the ride or having a plan to film it and just not really into that? I have never made a video but I am betting it is pretty hard work. If I did, I would want it to be interesting and of course would want it to be good quality. That is probably why I wouldn't, seems like a lot! haha! Anyway, sounds like you have some interesting rides coming up, looking forward to seeing them but if you don't feel like filming them, that is ok too! Thanks for sharing your ride. :) :)

I would recommend doing the EDT in two parts. Take the train to cologne and go south and fly back. The next time take the train to cologne and go north. Which bike would you prefer?

Have you considered having the inimitable Ross devise a good mostly off-road route from Land's End to John O'Groats for you? It looks to be around 1,000 miles.

How do you find going back to normal gears ? I haven't touched mine since having the Pinion or the Rohloff but I will compare one day .
