You should do one on the Sony F3 next. This camera is having a resurgence right now for Cinematographers despite it being 1080P. Very similar to the F35.

The thing I'm noticing is the earlier digital cine cameras were built with the intent of a camera that would create the "film look". Whereas most digitally shot movies nowadays don't really try to replicate that look.

The same also did happen with digital stills cameras as well. Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Leica... Everyone had been trying to emulate film in the beggining of the digital age. At first for stills, then for motion pictures. We've also had the megapixel war and then the video resolution war. History keeps repeating itself, and I love it.

Well, it kind of makes sense when you think about it. You had to really convince the old film guys to do digital. The closer it looked to film the more likely they'd go for it!

@@FrameVoyager I do believe early digital cinema cameras were also designed to emulate the "build" of a film camera as well to make it easier for film camera AC's to adapt easier. The Sony F65 and Panavision Genesis have this sort of "film camera" build as well the Sony F35. The recorders were designed kind of like film magazines.

Yeah, the early digital cinema cameras were designed to operate in a way that meant DP's could come over to them, use familiar lenses, shoot as they used to and get results that matched what they were used to. The Arri workflow was always good at that. And the goal was to get as close to looking 'like film' as possible. But YES, I think you're absolutely right that most digitally shot movies nowadays aren't trying to replicate that look at all. They are almost trying for a sort of idealised digital-film version with the same or higher latitude as film and similar colour spaces and palettes, but not that full emulation of film any more. I'd go as far as to bet most viewers these days might not necessarily even be able to pick out something shot on film vs something done on ARRIRAW or REDCODE RAW, side-by-side, such is the quality of the image they are viewing and how little is shot on film these days for reference.

@@loudspider316 I'm not saying movies shot on digital look bad, but a lot of movies shot with the Arri Alexa, in my opinion, look bland and boring. Then again, that's mainly due to how those particular movies are lit and color graded. Which is why I honestly prefer RED over Arri when it comes to digitally shot movies. If you're gonna shoot with Arri cameras, you're better off shooting on film with the Arriflex 435es.

This is my favourite camera. Sony's engineering at its best, when they were just so hyper focused on making something that could rival and look and feel of film. An absolute horror of a workflow to get the best image out of, but the image was so far ahead of its time and upscales to 4k so nicely. Thanks for giving a shout out to the community around it as well - a bunch of real devoted folks right there.

I couldn't afford to purchase an HDW-F35 or even an HDW-F23, let alone afford all the accessories you'd need to make a fully functional CineAlta F23/F35 kit, along with the cost to operate it. Not to mention the fact that you need a shoulder plate adapter, a bridge-plate to properly mount it on a tripod or shoulder mount rig, fiber adapter/interface box* to get 3G-SDI via dual HD-SDI outputs, an AJA 3D LUT box** or equivalent, the viewfinder or pellicle extensions/tele-extender, monitor(s), external recording apparatus (a la Atomos Inferno or Convergent Design Gemini) with SSDs, the electronic display that you usually see mounted aside it on that steel bar that protrudes from the top of the camera, and obviously you can't forget batteries of the V-mount or Gold Mount (Anton Bauer) variety, etc. When the whole thing is configured, it'll weigh at least 15 to 20 kg (33 to 44 lb) and consume at least 100 W of power just idling, so you better have PAG-link batteries. God forbid you're using the HDCAM SR adapter instead of an IF box because that will likely increase the power consumption well beyond 100 W when just trying to record to HDCAM SR tape. This is why I just decided to go with the underrated and underappreciated Sony SRW-9000, which is basically a souped up, CineAlta-vised version of an HDC-1500 EFP/ENG portable studio camera without the fancy wide-gamut prism of the HDW-F23, but it's all in a single piece camcorder design, does 4:4:4, RGB, 10-bit output at up to 29.97psf or 4:2:2, YCC, 10-bit output at up to 59.94p, and supports variable framerate ramping (over and under cranking), using built-in expansion boards and dual-link HD-SDI output. You can fully capture the 10.5 stops of dynamic range using the HyperGamma log or S-log capture settings in-camera even with 10-bit output restrictions, so it's not a problem for getting the full range of data off the sensors. There's also neutral density and color correction filters built in and one setting on the ND filter wheel that acts as an internal lens cap. Also, I max out at about 10 kg (22 lb) and 45-50 W of power consumption with an integrated HDCAM SR tape recorder, which lasts at least 4.5 hours on a single 220 Wh Anton Bauer battery. *: (you need 2 if you want the equivalent of 6G-SDI for uncompressed 1920x1080, 4:4:4, RGB, 10-bit, at up to 59.94p, which needs 600 MB/sec or 4.8 Gbps of bandwidth to deliver over quad-link HD-SDI between 4 SDI outputs across two IF boxes.) **: (if you want to get 12-bit with 4:4:4, RGB, up to 59.94p, this is essential, and bumps the bandwidth requirement up to near limit of 6G-SDI connectivity.)

@@NUCLEARARMAMENT There are a few things here that is wrong. F35 is very power efficient. Change the fans to new Noctua ones, and run it with odyssey 7Q, and you are not nearly close to the weight you are talking about. And using a more lightweight handle instead of the steel one, and you save even more weight. Or if you are lucky like me and have the codex plate you can skip the stupid IF box, and save even more space and weight. No one uses Atomos products with F35s, since they cant get the sweet 4444 12-bit. The ND color correction the F35 have as well, you just need a memory card for it, but it is very easy to do. No ND? Well I Prefer proper IRND for the F35 after testing a bunch of them, it just has the best effect. As for your asteriskt. The dual IF-box thing you speak of ONLY worked with the Codex M, nothing else. The Odyssey 7q can construct it, having a quad-link to single link. Based on what old codex documentation, 4444 50p is sent PsF over dual link as split up frames. Very unique for them of course. Hence why Codex M could read it, but not the Codex S, nor the Odyssey 7q. All this has been tested and documented by the community. While it should work in theory. In practice it does not.

@ I forgot about the 50p limitation for 12-bit, 1920x1080, 4:4:4 RGB output from the F35. I guess the F23 could do the 59.94p albeit maybe not at 12-bit but 10-bit instead. without a firmware modification or official update from Sony (I'm still awaiting that firmware update for my SRW-9000 that allows for 720p recording, as it was advertised in a product brochure in 2009/2010. I guess I'll never get it). I seem to recall a Convergent Design Gemini recorder, or the Odyssey 7Q (thanks for reminding me of that, BTW, as I forgot about it long ago) you mentioned being the best option since it allowed for up to 12-bit/1920x1080/4:4:4/RGB/60p recordings via dual 3G-SDI inputs linked to the AJA 3D LUT box connected to the dual IF boxes from the F35 or F23? But I guess not, correct me if I"m wrong. I forgot about Codex M completely, but for some reason I remember the Viper filmstream RGB 10-bit linear SSD flash recorder, and the OB S.Two recoder, which were used back in the day, for some odd reason.

What happened to the F35? The Alexa. F35 had not gained a ton of traction on account of it being expensive and still a real thing to have to change things around on set for (recommended accessories were a 24” BVM monitor, a panavision or Cinetal lut box, a DIT that knew the “right way” to do all this. It was a “large system”. Alexa did all that, looked better, was cheaper, smaller and a ton of rental houses went all in on it, Alexa’s were everywhere in 2011, I was there.

"Looked better" is still subjective. It was easier to grade and work with, but the main thing was it was a 5th of the price, and all the recording solutions and so on was built in. F35 was built to be a film camera just a sensor instead of film. They came at it from the "wrong way" with ergonomics.

@ Carl, I wanna argue! 😁 Good naturedly, of course. An Alexa EV body package in 2011 was more like 95k-115k. Also, for the first 9 months or so, you could only record tethered, SxS/ProRes wasn’t operational for a bit. There was also another thing that tended to make the F35 looks worse…the only official S-Log LUT then was a “technical” LUT that had no highlight rolloff and looked terrible. Colorists were on their own making that camera look good. Arri took charge, made official LUTs that looked great from day one and made it very easy. I think you can see it if you go back to the TV shows at the time that used it. Season one of Sherlock is not awesome looking, IMO. Today, for $4k, it’s a great tool if you can lug it around. But back then, Alexa one for a LOT of reasons.

@@TheNateweaver FINALLY A GOOD ARGUMENT! :) I appreciate someone making good points though. are you sure it was 95k though? Everyone I asked at rental houses said 75K at best, and reading the sales papers it was listed as such "The ALEXA camera is available in June, pricing starts at 45,000 Euros" And when it was made available it had recording built in according to all articles. Could Sony have done similar things as well, offered a cheaper F35 with internal recording? Most definitely, but pricing was probably still the main culprit. The DIT argument I am very much on board with as well, as we both know Sony isn't known for playing nice with users for making things easy. Granted at the end of it's life, the CVP editor made it really powerful to make your own gamma curves, and achieve a very different look within the sam boundaries as SLOG1. But yeah, I will still think Alexa won mostly because of price, but the recording, and usability made close runner ups. Sony just forgot to listen to the users...

@ it was closer to 90. That article is quoting body price only; no lens mount, no licenses, no EVF, nada. A lot of people who aren’t used to buying Arri stuff get the wrong idea when they see an Arri price list. I’m on my third. And for sure, no, ProRes was not avail for a few months on the first bodies. I visited a friend who was working on Modern Family back then with super new Alexas and they were working tethered to HDCAM SR decks. In the grand scheme of things it was a blink, but it happened.

@@TheNateweaver Got it, but those were the prototype then no? Yeah I know price list aren't complete, this isn't my first rodeo either ;) However I did forget that there was really not that many alternatives to ARRI when it came to accessories at that time, so getting the cages, matte boxes and whatnot, was still extra. Well, 250k still only got you the F35 body and IF box. The SRW-1 and the deck offloader was on top of that as well, and EVF, and such. 90 is still a third of the price at that point, so I think it has a "slight" way of tippin the scale. Honestly, that is why I think Venice got such a big foothold. It was cheaper than LF and they could deliver all cameras. I know Keslow ended up cancelling LF orders for Venice instead because they just couldn't meet the demand. But hey, let's agree to disagree :)

The death of the F35 was because it recorded to HDCAM SR tapes. When a tsunami took out Sony’s media factory there were productions contractually obligated to finish out their seasons on the camera that were paying $1K+ per tape just to get through the show. Once the season was done they all swore off the camera and moved to Alexa. And that was that. It was several years later at Convergent Design that I updated the Odyssey7Q to record the full 4:4:4 signal from the camera, helping to give it a second life on the used market.

I’m so happy you mentioned “ The Mauritania Railway” that was the film that got be interested in the F35 as it is an absolutely stunningly beautiful film. I recently saw a clip of that film show up in another KZfaqrs film about that railway without accreditation and it bothered me so much because of how gorgeous that imagery is.

Another great video. I love my F35. Getting 4:4:4 is not so difficult if you know how. Just get the AJA LUT Box. It will convert dual 1.5G to single 3G SDI. This is also handy for outputting 60fps 4:2:2. Setup is pretty easy. I record the 3G signal via the Blackmagic Ultrastudio to my laptop.

"Less issues with rolling shutter" - there are NO issues with rolling shutter whatsoever, because CCDs have global shutter. This is why CCD is inherently more filmic than CMOS.

It should also be added that CCD sensors are not antiquated. They were dropped in favor of CMOS because CMOS was far cheaper. In addition to no rolling shutter, CCD sensors have better low light performance because less electronics were needed at the photosites - hence a larger light gathering area. Since gain is added to rows of pixels - instead of at each individual pixel - CCDs don't suffer from fixed pattern noise like CMOS sensors.

Such a beautiful image out of this camera. Wish this CCD sensor could have a new life in a new body with improved specs such as 4k and improved DR and low light. The body of the f35 is a clunky beast. Your series is really cool. You should do a video on the short lived Digital Bolex. That thing was here and gone in a blink.

@@TVperson1 CCD is newer than CMOS as a tech they made CMOS and used them regularly before CCD was created. CCD is much superior in almost every way better low light, better color, no rolling shutter. The only con is power draw.

@@pilsplease7561 This is false. CCDs were used in large format cameras for some time, and performance above 100ISO was not great. That's simply not practical. Looked about the same, too.

@@pilsplease7561 Less rolling shutter sure, but there was nothing magic about the image from CCDs, they were simply more advanced at the time. Now CMOS is more advanced and has better dynamic range and colour, as well as lower power draw.

Love this series, a few corrections. That 350 Xdcam was an ENG camera with half inch as opposed to 2/3” CCD. We used them at Aljazeera English. The f800 was considered the king of XDCam , and when I say XDcam I mean recording to the 23gig professional disc format. Alexa was teased in 2009 but announced at NAB 2010 officially and I just happened to be in the room …

Yes we use XDCAM at work. The PDW-700 was the predecessor of the f800/850. It is still in use today and I also have a 700 at home. Its amazing for its age. Yo can record to 23/50 or 100GB disks though.

The first time I ever saw shots from this camera, also compared to others, you can tell the colours are something special. Too bad CCD sensors aren’t a thing anymore.

The F35 footage here shows the global shutter CCD technology wasn't so much 'defunct' but just replaceable at passably lower quality (and much lower price) by other cameras of the time as rolling shutter CMOS sensors slowly but constantly improved (Arri's ALEV became king of the CMOS sensors with a sub 10ms rolling shutter speed). Despite us having gotten familiar with and used to the look of the Alexa colour palette, to my eye, the F35 colour, organic noise, and rendition of motion are still some of the most film like from any digital cinema camera.

Around the time of this camera I was a major fan of Sony. In 2008 I started playing with the Sony PMW-EX1, and that became my go to camera while in college until 2010. I also played with the Sony PMW-EX3 in 2010, and then the Sony PMW-F3 in 2011. Sadly never got to play with the Sony CineAlta F35. But I was looking at a Sony Camera purchase around the time Blackmagic Design came on the scene with their first cinema camera, and that lead me to switching into the Blackmagic Ecosystem. Still I'm a fan of a lot of the shows/movies shot with this camera. It was a pretty stunning camera for its time. I'd say better than the RED One, even if the RED had a much lower price point. But the ARRI Alexa definitely took the industry reins for the 2010s.

Nice job! If I was to add something it would be the second life this camera had a few years after its launch when small solid state digital recorders made this camera great again by getting rid of the cumbersome HDCAM deck.

Yeah, I'm surprised more haven't jumped on these cameras. What people don't realise is that it's *Global Shutter* and it resolves much more detail than the Alexa, but it's the probably best camera for green screen or blue screen chromakey due to the lack of a Bayer pattern. Unlike most cameras, it has an RGB layout, meaning it WILL give you proper edges when you key. I suspect that the PL mount lenses scare people on the lower end of the market and the lower dynamic range scares people on the higher end. Honestly Red and Arri should offer a special RGB pattern camera for all those productions dependent on chromakey.

Well considering there are only about 200 F35s in existence, is it really that surprising that only a handful of people are using them? You can find them on eBay but there's a big ecosystem required to get them running that I don't think many people are willing to deal with. The closest thing now is probably the Ursa 12K because it also has a unique RGB sensor that can produce "true" 4:4:4 4K files for keying.

For anyone interested, I know a few years ago someone created a front-plate mod to change the F35 from PL mount to Nikon mount, but I'm not sure how many people took that up. And again, maybe 6-7 years ago now, someone was trying to create an F35 'mini', essentially trying to rebox in some fashion the F35 to remove unneeded boards and make it easier to use modern external recorders. Not sure if that happened, searches of the webosphere will probably answer that for those inclined.

There are many reasons why people are not buying or using F35s, the parts are simply not available to build up the system fully due to it's age, you would have a very difficult time and costly experience trying to fix anything on such a low production old niche camera, the camera body itself is huge and extremely heavy leading to costs that are too huge for amateur filmmakers in the form of more heavy duty tripods and stabilisers.

@@FrameVoyager How about reaching further back and covering the Panavision Panacam? Or the Ikegami EC35? Those were cameras that were supposed to change everything, but just disappeared. Or if you really want to go out on an abandoned camera limb, Ikegami's LK33. But that wasn't supposed to be a digital cinema camera, just an integrated lens 3D camera.

7:00 Less issues, more accurately no issues due to all CCD being global shutter, something that's just recently come back to consumer market sales on the RED Komodo 6k as until that body everything off the shelf new under the 10k mark has been standard CMOS only ARRI/RED's higher-end bodys were rentable with global CMOS but now most people can actually outright buy new current gen kit.

One fun thing to mention is that spare parts for this camera cost as much as they did when the F35 was released. You can get a used camera sure, but if something should go wrong there is no way you'll spend that kind of money. I believe that's true for the Alexa Classic as well.

Actually sensor only cost $72 000 now, vs the $150 000 back in 2010 :) And each sensor was rated for 10 000 hours. I don't know any F35 owner that has even gotten remotely close to it.

I do believe that the ARRI 535A cost $250,000 when it premiered back in 1990. That's $250,000 for the body only.

I never realized the F35 has such a cult following. I always thought sony's best camera image wise was the F65. Such a rich signal coming from those cameras.

I can argue that the F35 got long since superseded in Sony's own lineup too by the Venice and FX camera lines, like the Venice and its palmcorder twin, the FX9, will easily blow the F35's best day away by having better sensor tech among other things.

I bet it had a Hindsight feature like what GoPro has. Back 10 or so years ago Sony had a feature like that on their top dollar cameras. Was incredibly useful and would be perfect for Sonys now defunct action cameras. I really wish Sony had not given up on the action camera market. They could have easily beat GoPro in every possible arena. All we have now is garbage for action cameras.

On many high end budget films the camera department only gets like 2% of the budget. So if they need multiple cameras doubt they spend 250k per camera

Episode 1 was a disaster because digital technology wasn’t gotten good enough (not just because of Jar Jar Binks) - and now - film is somewhat on its way back again as a recording format because digital only is too sterile and neutral. Episode 4, 5 and 6 will thus always be the best Star Wars movies, because of George Lucas’ overexitement over digital film technology later on. Movies are simply not just technical effects, not even Star Wars.

Well episode 1 was primarily shot on film with like 2 shots using a digital camera. But I agree, movies are not just technical effects. When technical effects distract from the story is when it becomes a problem imo. Everything in a movie from sfx, the score, lens choices, camera choices, cgi, practical effects should all be purposeful and used to tell a better story. Not the other way around

The F35 was out at the odd time when RED came to surprise the industry with 4K. Lot of “1080p is all you need!”-talk and especially with the Alexa HD being introduced. I always thought Sony cameras were very tasteful choices and the later F5/55 were used on everything for a reason and the F65 was a dream camera but just like the other Sony cameras, the massive price kept that so far out of the realm of possibility that it wasn’t even a consideration. The F35, in my opinion, would have been a nice get during the 4K times we were just in but with 8K becoming the norm, I just don’t see the point now. I just filmed my first feature with a RED One MX and I would say that would be the best entry cinema camera at this point, it just has everything and it’s a perfect lead in to later cameras which are becoming more affordable by the day.
