As We announced in the first episode of our adventure around Albania, today we will go to Spacz, a communist prison. Built high in the mountains during Enver Hoxha's dictatorship, it was one of the worst factories in communist Albania. Up to 50 people shared their fate in small rooms measuring only a dozen square meters. To this day, there is a mine next to Spacz, and it was there that prisoners were sent. Working in inhumane conditions, sometimes even after 20 years, they were promised that each improvement in the daily standard would shorten their sentence by one day. The standard, however, grew every time it was executed. Inhuman conditions, winter frost, lack of contact with the outside world and treatment of inmates below any standards were often the cause of many tragedies. You are probably wondering what kind of a person you need to be and what to do to get to Spacz. The answer is… nothing. Spacz was a political prison, and even for the mere possession of propaganda leaflets inconsistent with the ideology of the state, or even for the mere willingness to leave the communist country, there was a risk of deportation to such a place built on the model of Soviet labor camps.
