Abandoned Walmart - Elkin, NC. This location has been closed since at least 2008. A newer and larger supercenter was built and opened a couple of miles away. Since this store closed, it has deteriorated to the point that it is raining inside of the building. Still has power.

I live out in Dobson NC and grew up around Traphill to Elkin. I remember being taken to this walmart as a child its such a shame to see something so big go to waste. But that other building up the hill from the old walmart is a closed Taco Bell they also tried having a few other things there but they didn't work out. I live here in Elkin. It has been closed over 16 years. Walmart wont sell it or lease it because they dont want Target to come to town. They did rent it to the lawn mower place across the street for a while. Yes It was a Taco Bell that moved with Walmart. Quiznos Sign light still comes on at night lol. The Damage from that fire was small.

Target would not be interested in this space if they were coming to Elkin. Elkin does not have the population for a Target store.

My area in North Augusta SC still has a 90's Walmart store that was turned into a Steve, and Berry's, then 1/2 of it turned into a Rose's department store, and the other side is now a Tractor Supply location, so it's nice that's being used again, but the rest of the area right around is fairly run down.

I moved to Elkin just over 3 yrs ago , this building has been untouched since long before that.

Hey Wallie, this Walmart opened in 1989 and relocated to the new store around Summer 2008

That’s in bad shape! The fact the power is still on too, that’s a disaster waiting to happen. Also there is an abandoned McDonald’s in front of that former Kmart down the street, looks like it been closed for over 10 years.

I remember Hagerstown, MD having a Walmart like this, it was demolished back in 2004-2005 and a Martin's Food Market stands in its place.

They don't have the smaller discount stores anymore these days. They only have supercenters and neighborhood markets, but not the older department stores.

I haven’t seen a Quiznos for the longest time. Do people even shop at that Bath and Body? I can’t Imagine to many who would. Thank You So Much For Sharing This Video.

I live 3 miles from Bath and Body Works. It is a busy store. I shop there often as well. This Walmart has been gone for at least 12 years.

That couch in the doorway is something I've never seen before at an abandoned big box retailer. Usually people dump off stuff like that outside the abandoned stores.

The diagonal pillars were more of the early 90’s. Looking at the little boxes design on the top I’d guess that this was probably built in the 90’s. Seems like that was a common design on Supercenters back then.

In Marlow Oklahoma there is an old Walmart painted brown an signs that say keep out but things are going on inside it , and there is a new Walmart down the road south a bit

Got another one for you, there's a old school Walmart in Oak Hill, WV and I think it's abandoned right now because a church was using it but I don't think so anymore. Went by there the other day and nothing was there. I would like to do a video there as well but it would be cool if we did a video on it. The right side of it is taken over by a Tractor Supply but the left side has the Walmart styling from this one as well still up and you can see the old label scar on the sign on the road peeking through.

Update: a Community Outreach Home Goods place is using it, I thought it was abandoned. But it's still a cool thing to find but there is a Long John Silvers there though and a Save a Lot up the road as well

Wow, the garden center was drier than the store. Maybe someone is converting it into an indoor swimming pool, indoor bass fishing pond or the world's largest aquarium! 🤓

I had the same thought because I saw on Google Earth Street view and I said that's definitely a Taco Bell that is abandoned right across from the abandoned Walmart because it has the design of a Abandoned Taco Bell.

What's sad is that I remember when it was built and first opened. We had TG&Y first, then K-mart came in during the early 80s, followed by Walmart. We were moving up in the world! Elkin went through a down period for a while, but it's on its way back again. I was born there and live near there now. Great place to live!

I worked at the TG&Y on North Bridge Street when I was in high school. Graduated from Starmount class of 80. Can't believe how the time has flown past.

Here in Gilroy CA they did the same they sold off the old building, like in 2004 for a bigger location. the good thing though is that a RV seller bought the building so it’s not abandoned.

I still have my Walmart Discount Store open with this same exact entrance, although the back by the garden center and the garden center entrance is different since adding the Online Order Pickup section, typically where you'd have the Walmart Auto Center. Any Walmart store that is not a Supercenter is considered a Discount Store.

Why am I not surprised to see the Quizno's closed. I remember when Subway started offering to toast their subs, it was in response to the rise of Quizno's. Well, we all see what happened to Quizno's, I was never impressed by them to begin with.

I grew up in Elkin. When Walmart left that building stayed closed. And yes on the other side of the parking lot was a taco bell that Alex's took over then a bank moved in to the building. That area of Elkin is slowly dying

Fun fact. I worked at Elkin Walmart from 2016-2021 and was there during the fire. We definitely wasn’t put out of jobs 😭😭 I thought we was going to but we worked the remodel along with a construction crew

Ingles is also in north Georgia area ( Ellijay Ga , Blue ridge Ga. / some other parts of north Georgia region area. I’ve been to north Georgia area on vacation , back in 2003 & 2005.

Pretty sure this whole shopping center used to be way more lively, there was the walmart, taco bell, a sonic right near by, and even a gamestop. I think things changed when they built the big one down the road and started moving things toward that part of town.

The problem with towns like Elkin is that they have plenty of land to develop new shopping centers, but not enough population to support multiple centers. So by the time a center gets old, its property values have gotten so high that its cheaper to buy undeveloped land, build a brand new center, and abandon the old one. Elkin Village Shopping Center is an exception, mostly because its in a really good location at the N. Bridge/268 Bypass intersection. If the bypass hadnt been built, it probably would be in bad shape too.

The Wal-Mart stores in neighboring towns from me has been repurposed into Rural King and has been built in 1989. They have relocated and they built a Super Wal-Mart. The one in my town was built in 1998 and they built it behind the older one that was built in 1989 and they tore it down and it is now a parking lot to the Super Wal-Mart.

There was a Walmart like this in Eden, North Carolina. Shortly after a Walmart Super Center was built, Tractor Supply took over the old building.

Coincidentally there is a Tractor Supply up the street from this abandoned Walmart. But it was built before the Walmart moved across town.

Elkin use to be the cruising capitol of the country. They put an ordinance in to stop it because some business owners whined. Funny thing is those complaining businesses were closed because cruising was at night and it was after closing hours.

The elkin walmart was closed about 16 years ago, the Taco Bell i believe was abandoned shortly after as were the nail shop, karate place, hair salon, pizza shop, and many other places in that shopping center. I was a teenager when it all closed and business became too difficult to get there. Walmart is never going to sell that place again or let it open again, its to damaged internally at this point but i believe they also wanted to prevent a target from coming to elkin.

It wasn't closed in 2008 because the sign you read said Grand Opening was 2008. They closed later and there is a new Wal-Mart there now.

Surprised to see Ingles there, I've traveled I-40 to Asheville and there is several locations near the interstate, I do know that in Walnut Cove, NC on US-311 is a old school Ingles that reminds me of the old school theme Food Lion used to have before they updated in 2012-13 and on NC 65 in Summerfield, NC is a Bi-Rite which looks to only be open for about 2 years now but has a old school logo on it which is weird.

The taco bell has actually been multiple restaurants and all of them failed lol, it's been a cagneys kitchen and a pattys grill i think? And none of them seem to see any success so it's probably recently abandoned for the 20th time

Pretty cool find, can do you one better tho since theres 60s walmarts still open never renovated, u can find them in all the economicly depressed towns like Henrietta and Atoka oklahoma
