ABB vs FANUC vs Yaskawa - which industrial robotics stock is best? We review each of these robot leaders to determine which meets our criteria which is to find the most pure-play exposure. ABB stock provides the least exposure to industrial robotics as a percentage of total revenues. They're focused on vehicle electrification, which has its own unique appeal. Both FANUC and Yaskawa offer about 40% robotics exposure in addition to other areas such as motion control and CNC manufacturing machinery. Both of these Japanese stocks are growing robotics revenues at a CAGR of 7-8% over the past 10 quarters or so. Valuations aren't overly rich, but that's because both stocks represent value more than growth. So, which is the better stock - ABB stock, FANUC stock, or Yaskawa stock? You better watch the video and find out.

Those FANUC's look good. My mate had one and it lasted centuries before it went wrong.

Great video, Joe! I know about ABB and Yaskawa, but nothing about FANUC. Again watch out the places that you are going. Vising Yemen is just crazy, and Somalia is also scary. Hope that you can rent bullet and bomb proof SUVs there.

Thankfully I just heard from Joe so he seems to still be living and breathing! He once told me he changes time zones more often than Kim Kardashian changes hairstyles, so I'd hope he's used to this kind of travel and knows what to expect! -Wyatt C.

Up until recently, all industrial robots have been pretty dumb. Yes, they have vision and expert systems running them, but are basically limited to the one task in front of them. AI has really come on to the scene in the last year, and is getting better at an alarming rate. The ability for robots to multitask, learn on their own, adapt to changes, cooperate with each other, etc means that the robots we will have in just a few years will be radically different. Do not judge the next 10 or 20 years by looking at the last 10 or 20 years.

I agree that advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence will definitely open to the doors to new possibilities for industrial robots. That's one reason why we're trying to find exposure to it. Well said! -Wyatt C.

The problem I see with is robotics is that the companies buying them are always trying to squeeze as much profit out of them as possible leaving very little margins for the company's manufacturing them.

Interesting given how much of a cost saver robotics can be. I wonder if companies will get a little less stingy as adoption of robotics continues to grow. -Wyatt C

I think the subsection "cobots" should have had a mention here. They are considered the future of industrial robotics. If you combine it with AI, to a "Human - Robot - AI" co-op, the quote from Toyota won't age very well.
@Nanalyze
@Nanalyze Жыл бұрын
The only issue with that is there isn't a decent pure-play stock to get exposure to "cobots" (at least that our team of MBAs could find). We wanted to focus on finding a way to get exposure to a single trend: industrial robotics. Maybe as the technology advances we will look into co-op robots, but it's just not anything we can see ourselves investing in at the moment. -Wyatt C.

Toyota makes the best quality vehicles in the world bar none. As long as they keep doing that, that's all that matters.

@@Nanalyze To me cobots are just the newest iteration in the "automation" theme, just as industrial robotics was. The pure players are not investable to me so I rather look for synergies within the big three. Motors, software, already big ex-China presence, you name it. Toyota produces the best cars in the same price range of a crappy french car. The latter part is important. They produce them in Japan with a rapidly dwindling work-force, a problem the country shares with us Germans but without our immigration model. Therefore they bet on automation and robotics - rightfully so imo. So Toyota will have a hard time with their contrarian strategy, even if their "human = quality" thesis is right, which I don't think it is going to be 5 to 10 years from now.

@@basestone Good response, thank you for articulating your thoughts! Indeed it's the leaders that have to worry the most. As for cobots, they say Teradyne is the leader, but they're just not growing that division fast enough, nor does management expect it to grow much as a percentage of total revenues. A cobot is a subset of industrial robotics, and it seem like the leaders also offer cobots. Some experts are saying that the hardware is ace, it's the software that needs some help.

@@Nanalyze Yes, Universal Robots is the leader. First mover, huge 3rd party module ecosystem. Would be a no-brainer for your pure-play but since Teradyne bought them, you need to get into testing equipment mainly to get a piece of that pie. So I'd rather go into automation to get into cobots. It fits whereas with Teradyne, I have no idea what their gameplan is with that acquisition. Problem is, I might cover automation with DMG Mori. I'm in awe with their equipment. So I'm not sure how to justify Fanuc on top of that. Maybe Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence UCITS ETF is the way, but they are very small. If one day you could get deeper into that whole sector of industrial automation, I'd hang on your lips.

Robots are cheap eye candy for industry outsiders. Automation is wider ( conveyors CNC manipulators) than robots and robots ( slow imprecise limited in weight lifting) aren’t always the best option nor game changers.

Fanuc has over 100 different product offerings that are classified under industrial robotics, so yes, it's a very widely classified domain. Good point. It's not just the robotic arms everyone sees in the pictures.
