ABBA - Don Lane Show Australia - March 1976 - RARE LOST CLIP

Thought to be lost forever, here in full is the RARE Abba interview on the Australian TV Show, The Don Lane Show. The date is approx 10 March 1976.
This full interview clip is so rare, here's what the Abba Fan Club said about its likely existence: "The full segment was on a Umatic tape up until the time that the 1976 show was transferred in July 2006. It was unspooled so it had to be re-spooled and the end that had come off the spool had eaten into the tape itself either cutting or chemically so that when it was played it went into bits as it disintegrated inside the machine. After many attempts, only 3 minutes were saved. However, the likelihood is that it was gone 20 or more years ago."

ABBA will NEVER die - their music is pure, virtuous, and a timeless Godsend when you look at the perverse trash the new age has to offer. And I have to say it's not only the heavenly sounds they produce, Frida and Agnetha are both dancing beauty queens with hearts of gold, and Benny and Bjorn the master musicians also have amazing talent for originality - what the musicians lack today.

Feels like yesterday. What a super group. Fernando was absolutely huge in Australia and yet some of their greatest tunes were still to come. I will never forget the night an ABBA special was aired on Australian tv that premiered their new single Money, Money, Money. I recorded it from the television onto a cassette tape (remember those :) ). I must have gone to bed that night and played it a thousand times. What memories!

@@CovidConQuitTheCensorship i think they would have but they said themselves they didn't enjoy touring; they loved performing but touring when you have little kids at home was hard on the family. I get it! They are magical in the studio but when Bjorn was talking about Australia it was with GENUINE affection because they were not as respected in their own time kinda like the critics who hated Led Zeppelin but NOW...LOL if they had stayed a band in the 80s they would have sold out ANY stadium. Critics be damned. At least the AUSTRALIAN fans gave them that real affection, and they appreciated it (well it freaked out Agnetha as she in 1 interview. ) I was too young to go to gigs then..😔

"...And West Germany". It's easy to forget how much has changed over the years. Sometimes the past is, quite literally, a different country. Back then I barely noticed Abba (well, ok, I was 13, so I /definitely/ noticed Agnetha and Frida!) But now, as I watch over my mother's decline into the final stages of dementia, I pick up my guitar and play SOS almost every day. The lyrics are all too appropriate, and it's an incredibly cathartic song to belt out! She taps her foot, I vent some frustrations. Thanks for uploading. Such interviews are increasingly fascinating as we approach the release of the new album. There's nothing like getting older to make you think about the past... which is daft really, because the less time you have left, the more you should think about today! But thinking about today, in such an uncertain world with such a complicated and uncertain future, can be a bit stressful. Yet Benny's comment about them being very popular in West Germany as well as Australia reminds us that back then the shadow we lived under was nuclear war with the USSR. It's in the nature of humanity to find something to worry about... sometimes because of sabre toothed tigers, sometimes only because of suspicion and misunderstanding, and sometimes because we accidentally hurt ourselves and the ecosystem. But music crosses borders effortlessly, connecting us. It also distracts us from our cares for a while, giving us a boost when we're down and need a bit of inspiration. Here's to inspiration. Here's to Abba! :-)

Boring? High level of musicality and vocal quality. It was not a sing-songy pop song, but a more refined classically stylistic song. It was more important internationally that Dancing Queen. Fernando us ABBA's most successful chart topper, holding #1 for 14 consecutive weeks on a major popular music chart -- Australia. It made the world pay attention. It did. The Fernando/Arrival era put ABBA into orbit with the following songs: 1. Fernando 2. Dancing Queen 3. Money Money Money 4. Knowing Me Knowing You These four songs with 'Fernando' leading the way solidified ABBA's iconic and legendary status.

This was a very successful weekly Australian tv program. I think Australia was the first country that fully embraced their music out of Sweden. They toured AUstralia for several months and filmed their Australian tour directed by the then relatively unknown Swedish director Lasse Hollstrom. This film became the basis of many of their music videos for the songs and the music video was kicked off world wide.

In Sweden that´s the general opinion too: Australia opened the door for ABBA. Maybe because that´s what ABBA says themselves. In Sweden they were quite looked down upon by the cultural elite; embraced by the people though. And then the UK of course... Just heard an interview with they guy responsable for the tour; they gave 6 sold-out concerts at Wembley; he was disappointed since they could have sold out twenty... In the middle of the punk area; the boys from Six Pistols and the Clash were backstage...

@@davidmcclelland9190 ABBA unison is great, but solo Frida is outstanding. Agnetha solo is ok. Frida was that groups pro vocalist and front and center performer entertainer pro. It took Stig Anderson/Polar Music a long time to get Frida to commit. She came from the vocal centric genre's and was not certain about joining a pop group. A comedown in a way, but pop music was more lucrative. But in 1972, Frida & Stig struck a deal. Stig Anderson was Polar Music, but Frida had all the pull. She was a hot property and had options. @@pauldunlea3669 Kiss does not come close to ABBA's success in Australia. Their TV show visit in 1976, the Saturday Show broke TV viewing records. More people watched that ABBA special than watched the moon landing. Also, 'Fernando' stayed #1 for 14 consecutive weeks. They had tons of songs on the charts at the same time. Today ABBA still is extremely popular not just in Australia, but all over the world. ABBA seems to have amazing staying power.

I am completely stunned that today 2021 sounds just as good or even better than then. The only superlative I can think of is to compare with Messi to get to the same level. I'm glad I've experienced both. I still have all their music left at home in my boxes of cassettes and LP. I love their clothes.

Yes and then Mama Mia was bigger. Then, most popular ABBA song in Australia was 'Fernando'. In fact, the longest #1 hold on a popular chart for any ABBA song, was Fernando, #1 for 14 weeks on Australia popular charts. Regarding Agnetha vocal skills. She was an amateur. Frida was the groups only professional vocalist and also the groups natural front and center performer entertainer pro. It took a long time for Stig Anderson Polar Music to secure Frida. Stig may have been Polar Music, but Frida had all the pull. A professional working artist since 1958; stage theater cabaret TV radio, ALL. Live! Frida was not a record label generated and marketed pop singer. She is the real deal. Stig had everybody. Except Frida! In 1972, Stig offered Frida a sweet contract deal and then committed to join the group. ABBA: Bright Lights Dark Shadows The Real Story of ABBA By Carl Magnus Palm In this book the girls vocal abilities are discussed. Frida gets lots of attention. What her Polar Music/ABBA and other peers say about her skills is golden!!!!! Benny, Bjorn, Michael Tretow - ABBA's engineer considered Frida a master vocalist as well as her peers.. She has always had a stellar reputation among music pro's. Musicians know the real deal when they see/hear it. So do listeners who are musically/analytically minded.

@@danbike9 Actually it doesn`t matter who is the professional or amateur singer. Both girls are great singers and whose voice pleases is a matter of taste. It has nothing to do with who is the best singer technically. It's also a lot about how the singer interprets the songs and the tone of the voice. When it comes to interpreting, Agnetha is in a class of her own, and Björn and Benny knew that too. Frida herself has also told about this. Anyway both ladies are great singers in their own way and it really makes Abba so great.

@@lynne268 Yes it does matter who is a professional vocalist. Being a professional is being proficient in ALL aspects of your chosen trade. If Frida was not proficient in ALL area's, ABBA would have not reached the heights they have. If Agnetha was proficient in ALL area's, ABBA would be even better. ___ Re: Stig's golden girls, late 60's - 70's Lena Andersson & Anni-Frid Lyngstad Frida was Stig's golden girl for a reason. Frida checked all the boxes: Pro vocalist, natural front and center performer entertainer, experienced, loved being on stage/performing, beautiful, engagement with fans/audience, a fun flirty engaging personality.

@@danbike9 Not everything has to be perfect. Imperfection is much more fascinating. Abba is best like this - as it is. Without Agnetha (or Frida) Abba would be nothing. That only matters. And they sound so good together and alone.
