When i first went natural about 7 years ago i did braid outs because i had no clue what else to do with my hair😅 eventually my new growth came in and they stopped working because i still hadn't learned my hair. Over the past 2 years I've been strictly wash n go but now my hair has plateaued. Constant fairy knots, split ends, and long detangling sessions despite a consistent routine (DC weekly, clarifying, trims, you name it) have me thinking i need to switch it up. Wish me luck 🤞🏽

Definitely team braid out. I have fragile hair and even the twisting motion involved with twist outs causes more breakage on my hair. Braid outs are definitely more gentle. Wash and goes cause too many tangles and single stand knots. - life's too short for all that!

Today is August 27th, 2022 and I love the way your hair turned out. It is really pretty nice and curly. I love braid outs. My hair is growing back from having breast cancer twice and my hair use to be down passed my shoulders before I ever was diagnosed with breast cancer and now my hair has grown down to my ear lobe. I have lymphedema and I can only braid the front and each side left and right but I can't braid the back, so my granddaughter or my niece will braid it for me. Thank you for your video.

I’m late to the party…. But great question! I have four textures/curl patterns ranging from 3b - 4b. My hair is thick and my strands are medium. Wash-n-go is my preference in warm weather BUT I use the Anthony Dickey method (Water Wash, conditioner and leave-in every 2 days/full wash day regimen with deep conditioning on the 7th day) to keep it tangle free, curls poppin and moisturized. In the Winter, my strands go into hibernation. I do twists or braids and wear head wraps exclusively. I moisturize every 3 days or so and do a full wash day with overnight Prepoo every 2 weeks. I think I retain more length with twists in the Winter. But, with the Anthony Dickey method…..I saw tremendous length retention, as well. Go figure!! 😊

I have long relaxed hair. I do two braids on sides, condition the ends, then roll it 3/4 the way up. Then wrap it with the mesh wrap for working out. I really use it for some fine waves and my length is still maintained below bra strap. It adds alot of volume. I am glad to be relaxed. It takes about 5 minutes max and it looks sleek and well done for next day. I braid my hair when it's 90% dry and braid it with moisturizer everyday. It looks good down, in a ponytail, or any style. It also cuts down on tangles. Lots of finger combing.

It grew and grew and my best braid out was on my wedding day! 🥰 After that day my hair grown so much more that I don’t know what to do with it?! I have no idea how to get a nice shape into it again. I've been team twistout for so long, because I found it easier and faster. However, in the past couple of years I've been beginning to suspect that the constant twisting is causing me breakage, although I trim regularly, and am having seemingly very little growth. I think I'm going to have to switch to braidouts, for the health and survival of my follicles...lol

Very pretty! Wash n go is my thing because the hair pretty much shapes itself. Also, when dealing with chronic pain, twisting and braiding my hair on wash day is too much. Sometimes I twist mine 3 days after my wash n go; maybe I’ll braid instead. I just told my daughter that I wanna start braiding so that it’ll be less tangled and form less knots. Everything you said makes sense because it’s true. Growing up I never had or heard of fairy or single strand knots, because we wore our hair in stretched styles. Not only do I get single strand knots now but, I get double knots on a strand because of no stretching. 🙏🏾❤️

I agree on the hair shaping itself when doing a wash and go. I prefer the look of wash and gos but the maintenance is just a headache for me! Sorry to hear you suffer from chronic pain! I can imagine haircare in general must be hard, let alone braiding up a whole head of hair! xx

Nothing wrong with a signature look! Mine used to be wash and go's, but I like braid outs a lot. I just need to master the technique. One of my concerns is how the Alabama humidity makes my hair poof up. Any tips on maintaining definition/hang time in a humid environment? Thanks so much!

I get this question a lot but because I don't live in a humid climate, this isn't really something I'm able to advise on unfortunately!! Times when I've been in humid countries I've struggled to maintain any curls definition as well. But I'd stay away from products containing humectants such as honey and glycerine as they attract moisture to your hair which will have the sam effect as applying water to your hair

Im curious how you determine your braiding pattern, the amount of braids you do, and the size of the sections. That's what I struggled with consistently, but I also could be overthinking it
@AbbieCurls
@AbbieCurls 2 жыл бұрын
defo not overthinking it! This is something I've learned through trial and error until I found what works best for me. For braiding pattern I always try to have the braids in a 'brick' pattern. So that one braid sits on top of the parting of the 2 braids below it - hope that makes sense. This just makes the hair fall better when the braids are taken down and makes sure that the partings aren't too obvious. The amount of braids will depend on the amount of definition/volume/curl pattern you want. More, smaller braids will be less volume but more definition. Bigger, less braids will be more volume, less definition

Hi Abbie Thank you for your videos and great hair tips. Your hair always looks nice. My hair doesn’t turn out right with braid outs or a twist out and I’m not sure if it’s due to the products or why my high porosity hair is dry and frizzy the next day. I also notice a lot of single strain knots especially in the crown area that I have too cut out. Any suggestions too help me out. I usually style my hair in a loose low bun. Thank you.
@AbbieCurls
@AbbieCurls 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for your comment. If you're struggling with damage in your crown area and you're often wearing your hair in buns, the bun could be the cause of this. Make sure you're not always wearing it in the same position and make sure its not too tight. As this will be causing breakage and knots in that area. High porosity hair absorbs moisture quickly but can also loose it Quickly. I'd recommend when you rinse out your conditioner, to do this with cold water which will help close your hair cuticle and lock in the moisture. Then apply your styling products. I highly recommend the ones I use in this video. As your hair is high porosity, you may want to apply an oil on top as well to seal the moisture in. This will help to increase definition and reduce frizz. I hope that helps!
@karent2021
@karent2021 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Abbie for your suggestions! One of the things I may have been doing wrong is not washing out the conditioner. With the conditioner in I apply a styling cream and seal with oil. Braid my hair in one plait so the ends are not loose, then cover with silk scarf until dry. The next day is when I notice my hair is very dry and stiff. I will try the Camille Rose products to see if they work differently than, Cantù, Shea Moisture and the Pantene gold line products. For years I have been using products from these lines and maybe I should switch. Thank you Abbie!

a lot of people say this! I do get slightly more frizz with braid outs than twist outs. the only reason I prefer braid outs is that I find the braids are less delicate than the twists so they stay looking tidier if I don't take them out straight away. I also get more stretch when doing a braid out. But I do prefer the curl pattern of a twist out. Everything I said in the video still applies to twits outs though :) and yes! I do still wake up at 5am on weekdays. I go to sleep at around 10pm :)

Hey there ! You could try using products that contain holding ingredients and/or are specifically formulated to hold styles. This could be mousses, curling creams, jellies, custards or even gels (be careful to not use too much of that tho). Another tip would be to dry your hair with indirect heat such as a hooded dryer or a diffuser (for 30 min maybe ??) before air drying. And of course make sure your hair is 100% dry before taking the braids out and before you even think of stepping one foot outside lol.

Abbiiiie! Lol sorry I’m obsessed, great video as per usual. I’m more of a WnG kinda girl 😌✨😭 and I’ve honestly never had many issues. Even with all my manipulating, because I stretch with a blow dryer and pick for shape (a lot!). I have been making a recent effort to opt for more protective styles, like braids. As for braid/twist outs, I feel like my hair gets more tangled with them. It’s also inconvenient for me because I feel like I don’t have as much freedom to manipulate like I can with a WnG. If I try, frizz city and it’s just not cute anymore. Maybe I need to try newer products 🤷🏾‍♂️ Love your results though and your vids! Giving very much consistency! Period 😌✨

I prefer the tighter texture of my real texture. So I don't think its necessarily a problem you can't get your braid outs to look right, some peoples texture just prefers to be left alone in its natural curls! you're the blessed one haha

I'm subscribed 😊 hi Abbie, quick question. When I was younger my mum would apply olive oil to my hair almost every single night and braid it into 2 pigtails to help her in the morning! By the age of 8 my hair was waist length! My hair grows but not at the same speed. I apply butters and other goodies that my hair loves and I braid it. Is my hair slowing down because of age or something else?? I'm really puzzled. I'm going to get my hair box braided because once it's in a protective style like weaves and braids it'll grow but when not, doesn't! Can you please shine some light on this for me 😊 I've got no knots or split ends as I keep an eye on that. Thanks in advance 😘
@AbbieCurls

one of my fav subscribers! ❤ I'm not sure of the exact science behind this, but I can imagine that our rate of hair growth will slow down as we get older. The same way our hair texture can change as we get older. So it's probably not that you're doing anything wrong, or doing anything to break you hair because it sounds like your hair still looks and feels healthy. It's more likely that your actual speed of growth has slowed. Make Sur you're eating healthy and drinking loads! that definitely makes a difference to hair too. Also make sure you're not doing TOO much. I personally don't recommend applying products everyday. xx
