Welcome to Colombo! This is our first full day here in Sri Lanka and we are so excited to explore its capital city. In this video, we explore the bustling Pettah Market, get our first taste of Sri Lankan food and soak in the top sights in the city. We hadn't heard the best things about Colombo but we were so surprised with what we found.

The green lake is called "Beira" Lake it was buit by the British to transport goods to Colombo. Its stagnant water so it's polluted water. It's not been used anymore!

Unfortunately, due to misguided nationalism, they don’t teach proper colonial history in Sri Lanka anymore. The British colonials were not big on water transport, favouring instead the construction of roads and railways. Their predecessors, the Dutch, built a network of canals for transport of agricultural produce like Cinnamon along the southwest coastal plain. The Beira Lake was built even earlier on. In 1518, the Portuguese who were ruling Colombo were under seige by local ruler, King Vijayabahu VII, so they built a moat (later enlarged to form the lake) around their Fort as a way to protect the Portuguese controlled city.

For How are you? We say 'kohomada' and normally we use 'Ayubowan' which means 'may you live long' to say Hello also.❤

I'd say in present Sri Lanka Aayuborwan is a formal greeting. The equivalent to hello in everyday usage would be "Kohomada" which translates to "How are you" but its really received as "Hello, how are you".

@@AbbyandGaz Water is looking green coloured not due to pollution ,but Algee devolved due to extreme weather conditions. . From the day I can remember for 40 years or more it always looks green . .but if you take water to a glass then you see it's a neutral in colour. So many governments including foreign companies try to clean it but are not successful. Now one Japanese company is working on it .they say More oxygen into water will clear the algae. Let's wait and see. Have a nice journey

@@chanakadushmantha7036 It's not due to algae, it stinks to the core, because people pollute it, accept it. Even sewage is connected from some of the boutique. At this day and age with technology and machinery it's not a big deal to clean this tiny pond. There are hundreds of such man made ponds across Asia with absolutely clean waterways, I'm not even comparing this with UK or Europe but I have seen better lakes and ponds in places like Thailand, Myanmar and Indonesia.

Dive straight in to SL culture they say is Petta? Seriously! R you serious! This is commercial area of SL not its culture!! For god sake don’t spread fake or wrong information !!! It is not certainly not similar to Chennai at all! Get serious stop spreading false information! Go to gallface, colombo 3, 5 area , colombo 7 is the most expensive area in colombo . Go to how people live in colombo !
