Gov. DeSantis signs bill penalizing those who get too close to working first responders

Getting too close to a first responder could now land you in jail. In addition, the state will soon forbid local citizen review boards from investigating officer misconduct. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed both of those bills into law Friday morning in St. Augustine. The Republican capped off a week of putting his name on "tough-on-crime" legislation, which included fighting fentanyl and upgrading penalties for shoplifting and child predators. The stop in St. Johns County was all about supporting law enforcement and fighting what the governor called a “disturbing” national narrative against them.

The boards exists because of problems with LEO’s behaviors. Fix the problem, don’t cover it up with his law.

@@WeSayFunny Brother, i had a LEO uncle, as were some of my cousins. I worked for a Sheriff’s Office for a few years. Cops come in all sizes and some of them suck.

@@stephengiunta1564 I am a current LEO. The boards are a joke. And are used extremely negligent, especially if the chief is given all power which constitutes as really the Mayor and their friends firing any officers. And the civilians think they know better than officers. The boards need a lot of work. Don’t know where you ranked in the SO, but patrol hates it.

Completely unconstitutional. The bill also states if you verbally harrass a cop and hurt his feeling you can be arrested. This won't stand constitutional review. The first arrest will give that arrestee standing in court.

I don't worry as I don't go around breaking laws because I am a real citizen. Calling abusive, law breakers citizens undermines the term. You try being an officer in these times. The DAs let loose the people you risked your life apprehending. The government wants to defund your department for political points. The criminals are emboldened by these things and more and more we see no respect for each other on the street. Most of these people getting shot are due to non compliance and are also repeat offenders.

@@infinity3jif Wrong. Freedom of the press do not give total and universal access to everyplace in the US, even public spaces can become restricted areas. So it's the same with this law, the difference is that the restricted area is around first responders.

Sign a bill for mandatory DNA testing to protect men. I'm 60, and just found out my grandson is not mine. That is fraud. Its too late for me, but women need to have some accountability. Laws are already stacked against us.

You're assuming integrity on the part of "investigators." Did you not hear the reporter say the boards are filled with activists? That's the problem with the Left today: they are still believing unreliable sources. Too lazy to think critically or do their own rabbit-hole research. If you were being investigated by a group of citizens who were not aligned in any way with your beliefs and considered you an enemy, would you feel you'd get a fair review?

Lmao i would like to see this in court. Your honor he was too close and officer had to arrest him. The defense, so did officer meausured the distance to determine the defendant was at least 25 ft away? Lmao . Cops now need to carry measuring tape along with the gun...

It can be easily estimated by body cam footage, not to mention that the violations will mostly be very off the limits, so doubts will not exist.

I live in Tampa. The house next door had druggie squatters. Someone called it in and they were gone PRONTO! This was 2 years ago. The house is rebuilt and the neighbors are nice. Guess what kind of people were squatting? Guess what kind of people were the previous tenants that destroyed the house and left at 3 am?
