Join us to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War with a national service at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra on 18 August 2023.
The service will honour and remember the service of some 60,000 Australian men and women who served in the Vietnam War and their families. Tragically, 523 Australians lost their lives in the war, and over 3,000 were wounded.

My eldest brother was killed in Vietnam in 1971 on his second tour of duty and my second eldest brother died from complications caused by Agent Orange used as a defoliant in the jungle over in Vietnam…the only consolation I have is they both served their country with honour had military funerals with honours and both their graves are maintained by Veterans Affairs forever, and both are on the War Memorial and Vietnam War Memorial and several other memorials…the one thing that has always stayed with me was the way they were treated when they arrived home and the indignity they were subjected to when the big march took place in Sydney to welcome the veterans home….all that was cruel and unnecessary just for doing their job they were required to by the Australian government.

The Legacies of the Vietnam War and the Honored Australia Memorial. The history of the Vietnam War must be rewritten and acknowledged as a struggle for freedom against communist oppression. Even after half a century, the Vietnam War remains unforgettable and deserving of honor for the countless men and women who served during that time. Today, it's important to recognize that numerous countries, notably the United States and Australia along with their allies, were deeply involved in the conflict. The memorial site dedicated to this honor is meant to ensure that the legacy of these freedom fighters endures eternally. Wonderful video.

What is a Veteran…A Veteran whether active duty, retired, reserve, deceased or discharged….is at some point in his or her life…..a person who wrote a blank cheque made payable to “Australia” up to and including his or her life.

The legacies of the Vietnam War are deeply intertwined with the commemorated Australian memorial. The historical narrative necessitates a reevaluation and acknowledgment, portraying the Vietnam War as a battle for freedom against communist ideologies. Over the span of half a century, the Vietnam War has become an indelible chapter in history, demanding recognition and honor for the countless men and women who valiantly served during those challenging times. Presently, it is imperative to reflect upon the global involvement of numerous countries in the conflict, most notably the United States and Australia among their allies. The enduring presence of this memorial site stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the freedom fighters, ensuring their legacy perseveres for generations to come.

Sorry. I understand the suffering of the Australian veterans and their families. But that pales in comparison on the pain and suffering inflicted on the Vietnamese who are still suffering. While the soldiers have no choice and did what they were told, the Australian govt is culpable for joining the US in a war, like iraq, started on a lie. This was repeated in the Afghanistan war in which naturally, a soldier was caught in atrocities. Yes I agree that the veterans should be honored for their sacrifice. But who will be accountable for the victims on the other side of an unjust war? There should be lessons learned but apparently there are not. In fact australia is on the next adventure now. Against China.

A difference between between Vietnam is Australia did not help enable that situation but it has along with the United States done that to China. In other words the west helped create an enemy which exists to threaten the world.

Our young men paid a great price, God bless all those who's "number" came out to go fight, we will salute you all, you were all so young, I cannot begin to imagine what you lived through. Warning this is a very sad song but true as PTSD treatment wasn't available at the time, song by John Prine called "Sam Stone" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNeGqq99rsCzhn0.html
