Matthew Manchester explains the cornetto, a musical instrument that flourished from the medieval period to the baroque. The cornetto is the platypus of the music world, with finger-holes like a recorder but a mouthpiece like a trumpet. The instrument represented life, death, and eternity when it was played in the cathedrals and palaces of Europe.

Very interesting. As a string player you cracked me up with, "violinists didn't need to breathe". Always felt that way myself.

Since the "o" suffix on cornetto refers to it being a small cornett, the reference in this video to a "tenor cornetto" is something of an oxymoron. It is usually called a "tenor cornett". As for the cornetto not falling into modern instrument classifications as a brass instrument, this is more than debatable. The most common modern organological instrument classification systems place any cup-mouthpiece (sound produced by the vibration of the player's lips) instrument as "brass instruments", regardless of the system used to control air column length (i.e. holes, slides, valves) or the material the instrument is made from.

Thanks so much for this video, very interesting and helpful. As a translator (Italian to English mostly) I often translate the booklets that accompany CDs, and regularly have to find out more about the particular sound of a given instrument to be able to render the author's full meaning in English. I really enjoyed your introduction to the cornetto! Grazie davvero!

Nice demonstration Matthew, thankyou. Very clear and enjoyable to follow. Aaron (2 below) must be a talented chap, wow! I never found it easy myself and can't say that I have met anybody else in my 46 years in the profession who finds it easy either. Indeed I once had a student who was unable to produce a single sound from it other than that of a rushing mighty wind! Keep up the good work. J

@TenorCantusFirmus

Piccolo ("cornettino"): C4 to D6 (sometimes pushed up to F6 or G6). Soprano: G3 to D6. Alto and "mute": F3 to C6. Tenor: D3 (or C3, depending on the model) to G5. There wasn't a bass (or was extremely rare: just three specimens, tuned one octave below the soprano, has arrived to us, and it doesn't seem to have ever been called for by composers), that role was taken by the serpent family, albeit trombones actually were the most common complement to the cornett family: typical brass ensembles back between 16th and 17th Century were usually composed of soprano and tenor cornett and tenor and bass trombone, or soprano cornett and alto, tenor and bass trombones.

Excellent introduction to this instrument! Questions: Why is the cornetto curved? Is the modern brass cornet closest in range to the wooden cornetto? If so, how do the two instruments compare for efficiency i.e. - blown air required for a given volume, as would be important in a large group like an orchestra?
@LeTromboniste0
@LeTromboniste0 10 ай бұрын
The cornetto and the modern brass cornet have pretty much nothing in common except the name. Comparing their "efficiency" doesn't make much sense, since they're used in completely different music and different contexts, and alongside different instruments. But the cornetto uses a lot less air than modern brass instruments. It's really not an instrument you want to approach with force, rather with extreme delicacy

Thank you! Do you think is feasible to put an EMBOUCHURE (like the oboe has) on a cornetto?
@SebastianSchleussner
@SebastianSchleussner 2 жыл бұрын
"like the oboe has" - I think that you mean a double reed? Well, you CAN take a reed from an oboe or so and somehow put it on the cornetto where the mouthpiece usually goes, and then produce some notes on the instrument, just for fun. I did fool around like that with a cornetto once, and the other way around with a trumpet mouthpiece on an oboe or so. But the instrument and mouthpiece are not adjusted to each other AT ALL, so don't expect to get a clear sound nor any in-tune scale out of it! (Or not with a ton of fiddling, which basically amounts to (re)inventing an instrument.) If you are looking for playing a 16th-century instrument like the cornetto, but with a reed, you are better served to look for the proper reed instruments of the time: shawm/pommer (oboe ancestors) or dulcian (family of bassoon ancestors).

It's not trivial to play by any means... The small mouthpiece creates localized stress, which makes it easy to exhaust oneself if using suboptimal technique - easier than on a larger mouthpiece like a trombone, in my thinking. But I think having some background in brass instruments and/or other winds helps a lot (I started playing it in good earnest after recorder and trumpet lessons, for example). As does taking lessons with a good teacher - which is possible online nowadays. It's a long time since I tried out a friend's "kohorn" so my memory is a bit blurry, but I did find it quite easy to cross over (at least for generating notes, which is all I tried) so I would indeed say that you are on a good way with that experience! A similarity beyond the small mouthpiece is that the instrument itself does not give one well-defined pitch for one fingering (rather something within a third or so) so that one must listen and fine-adjust a lot with one's lips and diaphragm. Still less wiggle room than on the kohorn if I remember that correctly, there you HAVE to make adjustments with the one hand in the "bell", don't you?

It's really a fairy tale instrument. The tuning is not perfect but it's confusing that I can't even say what happens. It sounds not really middle eastern or Indian. It could be that same note is not always in the same amount too high or too low?? It goes a little bit in the direction of a soprano sax in this aspect ??? (never played one)
