Ironically it was my hometown library that tried to stop my love of history and science. They would just ridicule me in front of everyone for checking out history books because it was the wrong books for a kid to read. 1. Those who don't teach, have no business making decisions about teaching. (I disagree, as a parent I've seen how teachers (who remember usually have ZERO experience in any other aspect of life) either naively or ignorantly making decisions for their classes that affect their students negatively. There needs to be input from outside sources. For example, A science teacher needs input from an actual scientist to keep up in the field. Same for History (and especially ideological interpretations of it), and more. Should they have the most input? Yup. But all? Absolutely not. 2. Standardized testing needs to go. I agree 3. Leave us alone and let.us.teach! I agree to a point, but let me tell you it's like pulling hair out trying to get my kids teachers (extremely high IQ, extremely high ADHD) to do anything to try to even understand what he needs. It's a constant fight with average intelligence teachers to empathize, and change methods (that they were probably reared and taught into). That being said, I do agree that the State needs to back off and let teachers teach. But that doesn't mean that teachers don't have a lot to learn as well, and like any other profession, some need a kick in the butt sometimes. 4. This is why I home school. I wish I could, but we simply cannot afford it, nor do I personally think I would be a good teacher to my children. I did terrible in school, it was so frustrating. My teachers all gave up on me. by the 5th grade. When I see that NOTHING HAS CHANGED when it comes to my kid, well..a lack of trust in teachers is justifiable...and in my personal experiences, only the average benefit from modern schooling/teaching techniques.
@jaydel3
@jaydel3 23 күн бұрын
@@WindwardToEdenI think the problem is that most teachers don’t have time to really help students with disabilities in a manner that would help them. Most students with learning disabilities and ADHD need a lot more time than an average kid. So, it is up to the parents to review content with their child at home or have some tutor help said child. Just put yourself in a teacher’s shoe. There are 30 students and the teacher needs to follow curriculum and pacing plans to ensure MOST students move forward. While the goal is to have all students move forward at the same time, that is not reality. So, some parents have unrealistic expectations. Teachers can differentiate lessons to help different learners but to what degree is the underlying factor. How can a teacher help students for example who don’t know their multiplication facts but the class is now doing fractions. The kid needs to practice daily at home and catch up. Most students and their parents don’t care and expect miracles from the teacher. The teacher will not sit for 20 mins with one student doing multiplication facts while 29 students need help on the current lesson. The student COULD practice and learn on the side, but for them to do this with fidelity is hard. They need one on one support.

As a teacher, I knew what my students needed to be successful. It's sad when people who have never worked in a classroom (or who haven't worked in a classroom in a long time or haven't worked in a rough school) try to make decisions for teachers about what they should be doing to improve things. What many of these schools need is more support and better resources, not more control and micromanagement.

Former teacher here. States don’t take over school districts over academics. They only do it for money reasons. Superintendent contracts are for several years, so when there is a school board that keeps replacing them for political or ego reasons then the past superintendents keep getting paid even if they no longer have the job. I know of one financially struggling district that was paying over a million a year just for fired superintendent salaries. Then there are the food programs. Millions of dollars pass hands even in the poorest schools but if the administration doesn’t file the paperwork correctly it can cost a district more than their budget for teacher salaries, and many districts NEVER file the paperwork correctly. These are the reasons states take over districts. States don’t expect or demand kids in public education learn anything which is why so many graduates with high GPAs but can’t read or do mathematics above a third grade level.

@Momof2_91
@Momof2_91 24 күн бұрын
I have never been in favor of them. What results do they actually produce? Aren’t regular testing on the material they already are learning more sufficient? As a teacher you have to pause your regular lessons to prep for standardized tests, multiply that by how often they have to do it. That takes time away from them learning what they need to know to move on. I think basic end of year testing is sufficient to know if they retained what they have learned to move onto the next grade. And they wonder why teachers are leaving the profession and parents are pulling students out in drones. They’re doing the opposite of what actually needs to be done. The answer is not mass production learning it’s individualized learning!

Also single parent homes are increasing every decade. This is why Poverty always leads to higher crime rates. The correllation is there. Until we improve on the quality of life of everyday working class citizens, the more we are going to have problem with the youth. My grandfather never graduated from middle school, but he was the breadwinner in our family because of manufacturing jobs and jobs for lower class, we dont have that anymore so its been a stigma since we lost manufacturing.

The US already produces the worst educated graduates of the western world even though we spend more money. Even some third world countries do better than us. We need to attract, retain and give teachers better tools and more freedom to do their jobs, not turn them into unthinking robots. And of course evaluate their results and reward or even fire them based on those results. If you want to standardize some part of education, develop a national system of computer-based education, with AI used to evaluate weaknesses and progress to increase focus on topics that the individual students are struggling on. THEN use teachers to handle socialization and the more human aspects of education. And for the love of God, stop moving students up the grades until they master the topics. Or maybe even get rid of the concept of grades and have students advance through the grades on a per topic basis instead of per year. So, a student might be at 7th grade math, 4th grade language(s), 6th grade science... at the same time. And graduation from school requiring mastery of all school-level topics, while possibly be allowed to start on some college courses early if they so desire and satisfy the prerequisites.

I have hope because I see good people fighting for better education.

Wow! The administrators gave the teachers timers! That is educational innovation right there. Those administrators are earning their salaries. "Hey, you know what's been holding back all of those lessons you've taught for years? Timers. That's what's gonna close the achievement gap. Forget all of those other things we've been requiring for the past 3 decades that haven't statistically changed where we're at academically. Timers are gonna fix it all." Minute 4 of the video....

They also forgot to mention that they are so short staffed they are hiring people who aren’t certified to teach (not substitute positions) they are planning to cut half the wraparound specialist. The administrators that help service needy families and help them with food, clothing, and homelessness. The student that are testing low are the most likely to need these services. If they want to know what HISD needs it’s affordable after school services, teacher’s aids, and better diagnosing and plans for IEP’s so parents can have resources to get their students assistance. Empower parents and teachers not just coming in and firing the small population of people who actually care for children and blaming them.

@@Facefully.That's not what they were trying to say...at all. This is what they mean, “How to make children stupid, mean and just left with more questions.” Where did you get the” I mean I am” from? You couldn't tell from the context the video provides, that they were talking about how to make a child act stupid and mean...? Of course, I could be incorrect but based on the context, as well as use of the word and, it seems like that's what they actually meant. Even how you wrote was incorrect. It should've been - How to make children stupid. I mean, I am just left with more questions. Or How to make children stupid; I mean, I am just left with more questions. Also, the way that you broke up the second part, doesn't really make sense even though technically it is correct. Typically, somebody would say “how old are you ? Since you're writing at a fourth grade level” To write at a fourth grade level makes no sense, because who are you talking about? You're not directing that at anybody. You're just saying to write at a fourth grade level. Read it aloud, you'll see how weird it sounds. If you're going to correct someone, you might want to make sure what you're saying is correct. Since even in what you thought they were trying to get across, you missed a comma. Regardless, you have no idea why this person was typing that way. Could be they have low vision, it could be they were just typing quickly because they're tired, it could be they have a condition that makes it difficult for them to read such as dyslexia, ETC. So not only did you not correctly, correct them, you also are engaging in ableism potentially. To act like them misspelling things/have incorrect sentence structure, has anything to do with their intelligence is ridiculous, you can't base some intelligence level on misspelling one comment. You would need more data points to make an accurate conclusion. Also, you are aware that not everybody in the world speaks English as a first language correct? Let me guess you're an American like me, since we typically seem to forget that it seems... There are so many reasons I can think of, that could cause,a person to misspell. Out of curiosity go, why did you feel it was necessary to make this comment? Did it make you feel better to try to put somebody else down? I made my comment, because I thought it was funny that you clearly used incorrect grammar and because bullies should be called out. But I'm curious what your reasoning was.

Kids need more one on one attention. That’s what is effective-interaction with a teacher that puts them on the spot to answer and be corrected. That requires personal attention, and a smaller class size. Passively watching a PPT or doing a work sheet on your own is not as effective as interaction over the material with other students and ideally a teacher.

How do people who are poorly educated help their children?
@rachelle_banks
@rachelle_banks 24 күн бұрын
@@DarkNJuju First I usually ask parents, "What kind of person do you want your child to be?". They don't need a formal education for that question - only heart. From that we can get a clear sense of the values in that family and use that as a guide for setting priorities. We work backwards from those priorities and then see how to do every day things to support that. When it comes to academics, I like to encourage parents to tap into the resource of retired educators and administrators in their community. Ask them, "what is my child 'supposed' to be learning right now?" Then between their guidance and the internet + a network of other parents who are able to identify their own strengths as well, they can get something going. Having all of the answers is not what makes someone a good parent. Being willing to reach for the answer and applying the help- that's a good parent.

Schools are funded primarily through property taxes. So regardless of whether your children are home schooled (or even if you don't have kids, you will pay for public schools. This is why schools districts in more affluent areas get more funding then those in poorer areas. Enrollment levels have very little to do with it. Your solution will only have some schools close due to enrollment being too low to justify staff and maintenance costs of buildings until an equilibrium is reestablished. This would create a scenario of a relatively few high funded/supported schools. But once that happens, there now will no longer be enough schools if enrollment goes up for any reason, creating a worse problem in the future if the district grows.
@rachelle_banks
@rachelle_banks 23 күн бұрын
@@christracey5813 The pot from which the public school drawers is filled with funds from property taxes primarily, that is true. But a school with a lower enrollment number, and/or children that are missing days over the allotted amount per month where they can still be counted as really being a student there... That school will receive less funding than a school that is full. We know that because it's logical. The point of my comment however is not to stick it to the public schools. It is to offer an actual alternative which is that the children do not have to be enrolled in public school or even associated with it. Here in Florida and at least in my school district it is very difficult to even homeschool your children without being counted under the umbrella of the public school, because then they get to--- count the children as students and get the funding related to those numbers. But parents are the ones in charge of their child's education, whether or not they choose to outsource the day-to-day teaching. *Also here, the child can apply for a home school voucher that pools from that same property taxes funding and goes back to the parent who is homeschooling so that they can use it in their child's education. Essentially it is kind of like the step Up scholarship for families that want to send their child to a private school.

Most teachers with experience know how to make a lesson work for that particular group of kids. If the school districts would just trust their teachers and allow for creativity and personalization I think the schools would improve. Keep the focus on the traditional core subjects rather than politics, and let the teachers have some creativity to develop interesting lessons in each subject. Also, the libraries need to be expanded, not closed! Kids should have access to all kinds of books, magazines, and newspapers, particularly in hard copy format to minimize the distractions that come with screen-based reading.

Whenever an administration official uses terms like “for the kids,” “research based,” or “best practice,” it’s usually anything but! I wish interviewers would start asking follow up questions like “Specifically how does this benefit kids?, Which study is that from? What makes it a best practice?” The fact is most of these school takeovers have very little to do with improving student achievement but more to do with furthering a political agenda.

The ex-librarian has the right idea. Communities can circumvent this garbage if they care about the kids and get involved in working with them outside of this broken system. I'll never say that this is easy to do, though. Government-controlled agencies have often blocked my efforts to do community science outreach, because governments at every level deeply fear a truly educated populace. School-to-prison pipelines do generate good revenue for those on the prison side. Capitol riots committed by people who never learned how to think for themselves generate amazing ratings for the mainstream media. The really big question we all have to answer is: whose country is this?

I would bet these schools would benefit more from free after school homework help and tutoring than all the rest. Socio-economic factors play such a huge role in student achievement and it has NOTHING to do with a parent's DESIRE to help their child succeed. I would say that most parents care about the success of their child, but if you are at or below the poverty line, you may have odd working hours, multi-generational family homes (loud, more mouths to feed, cramped, etc.), you may work multiple jobs, your kids may help watch your other kids... there are so many things that get in the way of learning. Take all this money you are using to tell teachers they are doing it wrong, and put it towards helping the kids. Pay teachers to stay an extra hour for homework and tutoring help. That provides child care to families who need it as well as educational support services.
