The Academy says a campaign to get the lead actress of a little-known indie film nominated may have violated its guidelines. ABC News’ Andrea Fujii has the response from Hollywood.

It’s ridiculous that big-time studios are allowed to spend tens of millions of dollars to campaign and lobby for Oscars on behalf of films like Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water, while deserving little independent films are deemed to have committed “fraud” when actors like Jane Fonda, Kate Winslet, Sarah Paulson, Charlize Theron and Cate Blanchett got NO MONEY for promoting this film and embracing a performance they personally loved on their social media platforms. If Andrea Riseborough were to be disqualified, they should also disqualify ALL FILMS that spent ANY MONEY to lobby for the Oscars. The height of hypocrisy to ensure little indie films never see the light of day..

This is all ridiculous. Perhaps what should be reviewed is why the same actresses get nominated over and over again and why when an unknown woman gets the nomination the media thinks SHE is the imposter. Is it lobbying if you are not associated with a big studio but if you are it’s not? Shame on the Academy for announcing it was undertaking a review. What purpose does that announcement serve other than to undermine the little guy. If the Academy had any class it would have kept it’s silly review to itself. And shame on the media for targeting this woman.

It's interesting because all of these A-list celebs did everything they could to get Andrea nominated and now that she has, they may have just put her in even worse of a position had they not said, "VOTE FOR HER!" and instead just say, "GO SEE THE MOVIE!" and let people make that decision themselves. I haven't seen To Leslie but even if it's the best female performance of the year, I feel like it won't be her performance that is memorable anymore, it's going to be all this drama, ultimately hurting her chances of getting an Oscar this season or in future award seasons, because not many people in the US are as familiar with her and only know her name through this award show drama. Interested to see the outcome and what the hell will happen this year, at the award show.
@SwimmerPrince
@SwimmerPrince Жыл бұрын
From what I've seen so far those A-lister paising her did not say "vote for her" either only saying that her performance is the most outstanding or the standard "For Your Consideration" which is the standard Oscar campaign. I don't think the 'grassroot' campaign violate anything.
@csj27
@csj27 Жыл бұрын
Nah, you shouldn’t say anything until you see it. I was set on Danielle but Andrea’s performance stands by itself regardless of this drama. It’s literally some of the best acting in years and obviously enough people agreed because now she has an Oscar nom. So really all we can do is wait and see.
@makeupbyjessx13
@makeupbyjessx13 Жыл бұрын
@@SwimmerPrince I think the point I was trying to make was that there is a big gap of culture & understanding between A-list movie stars, who help make up the Academy voting body, versus the average American who isn't a cinophile, isn't allowed to vote, but is interested enough to hear about the nominations on the news. Because the campaign for Andrea was started by her A-list peers, in the bubble of Hollywood, although the performance may be worthy of the nomination, these A-listers intentionally targeted only the Academy voting body during their voting period, to try to sway enough votes. And it worked. But I'm also saying that I believe that the majority of people in the US are just now finding out about her through this Oscar drama, which I think could hurt her in the long run because the very first association people here are going to have with her name won't necessarily be her performance (because many people haven't seen it) but rather whether or not the nomination/award was given to her by a fair voting body. The whole campaign her peers are doing for her may end up not only hurting her chances of winning, but may also leave an unfavorable taste in the public's mouths for her in the future. Because even if the performance is great, sometimes the drama that happens off-screen outshines the performance.

Awfully funny that the people who have benefited from the system are now rocking your boat to change it so that someone who looks like them can also benefit 🤷‍♀️.

I would not be surprised if she got the most votes for a nomination. Imagine Michelle Yeoh being pushed out for her? one of the best performances of the year. Not even one of the most decorated actresses like Viola Davis could get the same support from her peers. Danielle Deadwyler who was in an equally low budget film couldn't get the support. It really goes to show the systemic racism deep rooted in Hollywood. Also, now ya'll wanna say this is about performance but when it comes to WOC it's about culture. Ya'll wanna take away merit from WOC at every chance.

@@ozoz3444 see past the race. not everything is racist for pete's sake. just because your favourite black actresses dont get nominated this year doesnt mean andrea does not deserve her spot. also, if you want to advance a just cause, pick something more important than an award for movies. 'oscar so white' boycott was the dumbest cause ever, spearheaded by a very priviledged selfserving succubus.

How is this different than studios putting out “For Your Consideration” ads or an months long Oscar media blitz for a star or movie? Social media is replacing Television, Magazine Ads, and Billboards that’s all. It’s always been about lobbying and PR. The best performance doesn’t always get recognized or win. AR is an amazing actress. It’s a small indie move. If her friends or colleagues want to help create buzz so people see the movie because there is no money for a campaign who cares? I wish all the underdogs had help like this.

I understand the backlash. Andrea's movie grossed about 25,000. If she's such an amazing actor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Winslet and others should have used their status to get her cast in better movies. Instead, they placed this woman in an elite class of actors who have worked extremely hard to get their careers and to build their relationships. There is a process to all of this but because the process was not airtight, she was able to leapfrog over all of it. Since the movement was successful, but not accepted, there is a real possibility these A list actresses may have ruined Andrea's career bc their actions to elevate, denied others their chance to be nominated within the process. I'm glad the Academy is taking a very very close look at this so it never happens again.

Heck, even some of the best performances are dead at the Box Office, but it doesn't take away from how great the work really is. The fact that "To Leslie(2022)" was discovered by the right viewers is actually a blessing, because small films are often snubbed if the hype or demand isn't there, or often times the right cast choice. Can't say for myself to what happened, but yes, it does look fishy, because I mean come-on it's the Oscars, Winners are pre-determined already, which means the people behind the scenes had more than enough time to be picky and choosy.

Usually the excellent performances are the ones that get nominated. Sometimes it's 'political' or read as a 'career' reward for staying power or a 'sympathy' award (Liz Taylor, who was in the hospital at the time, for "Butterfield 8," a movie she hated, comes to mind) but there are ONLY 5 spots. Everyone who deserves a nom. can't have one.

Everyone assumes that Andrea Riseborough's nomination hurt the chances of Deadwyler and Davis ,how do we know that Davis and Deadwler are now 5 and 6? Maybe their 6 and 7 or 7 and 8 ! There were many good performances this year by actresses ,the 5th spot could belong to Margot Robbie ,Emma Thompson or Olivia Coleman ,how do we know? So the answer is to take Riseborough out for a black actress , which black actress gets the spot and do we then have to replace Michelle Williams , Ana de Armas or Cate Blanchet to make room for the other black actress? Give me a break! Can anyone say WOKE?

The controversy is that the nomination came from lobbying but from what I read, the usual way to get nominated is for studios to throw money around (which doesn't seem right to me -- sounds like privilege). Lobbying to me is actually the fair way. But ultimately should it not be about the merits of the performance rather than how the performance gains attention?

Much ado about nothing. Homelessness is on the rise. Securing adequate, affordable shelter is another. Violence against females is everywhere. Access to health care for the poor, middle class and elderly is compromised by the businesses that are profit driven. A power grid that is primarily above ground and vulnerable. But, these very privileged people are concerned about a little gold plated statue.

While I can understand the backlash to her nomination to a degree, let me play Devil's Advocate: People saying she took a spot from nominating a Person of Color: Michelle Yeoh is nominated in the same category; a Person of Color does not *always* have to mean exclusively a just a Black person (I'm Afro-Latino, BTW). People wondering how was she nominated without a prior Golden Globe or Critics Choice nomination: Oscar nominations happen *nearly every year* without any major prior nominations. And people saying she should have been nominated on merit: no one really saw the movie before she was nominated, so how can you even be certain she didn't deserve to be nominated if you haven't even seen her performance? This majority of the backlash is unnecessary.

Why was her nomination being investigated? Did the Academy not think her performance was worthy of a nomination? Because from what I've read so far, either from the critics or audiences alike, they all sing nothing but (unanimous) praises for Riseborough's performance in To Leslie. Some even predicted her to get an Oscar nomination, so _certainly_ not that unsurprising or totally undeserving. They make it sound like as if Riseborough is another Pia Zadora *smh*.

@clone2k696
@clone2k696 11 ай бұрын
@@Whitneypyant Well yeah so what? It's not like it never happened before. Back in 2009, *Maggie Gyllenhaal* was nominated for best supporting actress in the movie "Crazy Heart". It was her sole nomination that year from all major award shows. She didn't get nomination from the Golden Globes, Cannes Film Festival, BAFTA, SAG, Critics' Choice Awards, Satellite Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, NY Film Critics Circle, and LA Film Critics Association. The only other nomination Gyllenhaal received that year was from the much smaller Dallas-Fort Worth Critics Association which, of course, was not on the same level as the Oscar or Cannes. Yet you didn't hear people getting outraged and questioning her nomination that year. Why different treatment with *Andrea Riseborough* then? Similar to Gyllenhaal, Riseborough's other nominations were from less popular Chicago Film Critics Association and Independent Spirit Awards. So it's not like she didn't get nominated _at all_ in _other_ award shows and film/critics associations. Esp. since many people who have watched *"To Leslie"* thought that Riseborough was _phenomenal_ in it and totally deserving her nomination, so why the outrage? What's the issue here? I totally don't get it.

Certain people want to know why 'Warrior Queen' actress wasn't nominated. Not every year. It's been hurting ratings to reward, based on a social agenda. When getting nominated involves a measure of luck and who you were nice to, it's exciting. Why shouldn't it be part political, too. You know? You do this 'Warrior Queen' thingamajig. And people are trying to say it was non-fiction. As someone, who has not had much interest in award shows, the RIseborough and de Armas nod are a BIG step forward. I wonder if these people, who make up the Academy, know how the Best Actress category, this year, is HOT. Having 'screenings' of RIseborough's movie is not 'lobbying.' They can't force a high level professional/peer to cave on a gimpy performance. Lobbying would be like giving someone money or a job for their vote.
