WARNING: This content may distress some viewers. The live export of animals to overseas markets has been contentious for years. In March the Federal Government announced plans to phase out the live export of sheep. Meet a campaigner who says her latest footage shows Australian sheep being mishandled, in violation of Australian rules that were introduced over a decade ago to secure the future of the live export trade.
This report by Rhiannon Shine and producer Marty Smiley.

The live export industry should be ended. It continues to ignore the animal’s rights, it is a total inhumane disgrace that if it were to happen in Australia would see jail sentences handed out and companies closed.

This industry has had it's chances and this latest evidence shows that they cannot be trusted and we here in Australia are unable to stop these barbaric practices, therefore people are now fully justified in demanding that ALL LIVE EXPORTS BE BANNED. We can source alternative markets in the chilled meats trade, so THERE IS NO EXCUSE! Forward this video on to everyone that you know.

Live animal export is an issue about equipping foreign religious practices. Whilst money is involved, the welfare is being put secondary to a practice that is endemic in a foreign state religion. How are you going to stop that. Whilst politicians and exporters see the coin attached to the practice, with the welfare of animals secondary -- Australians should be wary of 'mission creep' whereby the same tolerance of mistreatment is extended to its people by similar bureaucrats that cant self regulate their moral code.

The bottom line is that once the animals leave our shores, we have no control over how they are treated. We can ask them do do the right thing, but we can’t enforce it. It’s fine for the government bodies to pass the buck and state that it’s the responsibility of the exporters, but it’s the same story. If it could be stopped by the exporters, it could be stopped by the government but the government cannot guarantee their treatment, and neither can the exporters. It’s disingenuous on the part of the government to even suggest that we can monitor what happens on foreign soil. Every single person involved (and every man in the pub) knows that the only way to stop it to to outright stop live exports in the first place. We keep talking about banning live exports, but talk is cheap.

@Sagealeena
@Sagealeena 11 ай бұрын
From what I can see they have really improved standards, and some countries seem to have worked really hard to improve their abattoirs but that doesn’t mean that everyone is doing the right thing. The issue is that it is cheaper for those countries to purchase live sheep from us than prepared lamb. If it’s too expensive they will either go to countries which don’t have the same standards for live exports, or they will have to go without which would be awful because those countries don’t have their own agriculture industry so people will go hungry. I think it’s important for people to consider why countries in the Middle East are willing to comply with Australian regulations so they can continue to slaughter the sheep themselves, and I think it has a lot to do with Australia not having the capacity for large scale Halal abattoirs. I do think we have a chance to get a win-win for everyone but I don’t think we’re on track for that at the moment. A lot of farmers in WA are still pushing for it to not get phased out, so I don’t think the federal government has been clear enough that this is happening eventually, and so they aren’t listening to solutions enough and aren’t happy to hear that most farmers will choose to stop farming entirely rather than move away from live exports. I hadn’t previously realised that WA sheep farmers rely so heavily on live exports because they frequently have droughts so can’t keep the sheep for longer, but the abattoirs can’t process all the sheep for export. I think that if Labor wants to phase out live exports they need to be prepared to do it over an extended timeframe, like 2035/2040. They will also need to provide greater investment in meat processing, particularly Halal, and refrigerated shipping. I also think they would need to strengthen regulation and improve infrastructure for internal transport of live animals because I think standards could be higher and because I’m not sure if WA can provide enough capacity in abattoirs and they may need to increase shipping to eastern states or to northern WA for processing. I think regulation of the industry could continue to be improved, maybe by increasing the penalties for exporters if they’re not properly monitoring the full process once sheep come off the boats, including fines and potentially bans from exporting to that country. This also means that countries which are complying with Australian standards can continue and those that don’t will lose out on those that can export live animals to them (even getting to zero if they repeatedly fail to comply with standards). If we really want to fully ban live animal exports, then we will need to push other counties to improve their animal welfare standards for live shipping, or else they will pick up the market that we put down and more animals will suffer. The new, stricter regulations have only been in place for a few years so I don’t think we can say they’ve fully failed, but we do need to put in more work and more investment if we are going to improve animal welfare in the global live export market. I’m not sure if Labor is prepared to do that, as it seems like they’re wanting to push farmers away from live exports instead of look for new potentials for growth. The focus should instead be put on investing in abattoirs (particularly Halal), infrastructure to humanely transport animals to northern WA and NT or the eastern states (ideally by rail), and refrigerated/frozen international shipping. This will provide a lot more local jobs, while ensuring food security for those nations that can’t produce enough food for themselves. There are even opportunities to grow the market and strengthen ties with other countries such as Indonesia which has a huge Muslim population, is very close by, and is on track to have a booming economy and growing middle class over the next few decades.
@Bulldozeau
@Bulldozeau 11 ай бұрын
I would maybe take a step back and look at how long this has been going on and how little has changed and improved. An Australian government report in 1985 stated that live export on animal welfare grounds was completely unethical, and the industry has continued to fight every single advancement in animal protection and harm reduction. No matter what rules or procedures are put in place, the same things keep happening over and over and over again. If the industry was going to clean up it's act it would have done it a decade ago. "I think it’s important for people to consider why countries in the Middle East are willing to comply with Australian regulations" But as you have seen they do not comply, over and over and over again "I think it has a lot to do with Australia not having the capacity for large scale Halal abattoirs." What is this based on? There is zero reason the sheep can not be prepared here "I hadn’t previously realised that WA sheep farmers rely so heavily on live exports" You should maybe have a look into what percentage of sheep are actually exported. "I think that if Labor wants to phase out live exports they need to be prepared to do it over an extended timeframe" Why? They promised to do it in 2018. There is Zero reason that it should take this long "The new, stricter regulations have only been in place for a few years so I don’t think we can say they’ve fully failed" You should have a look into how many 'fails' Animals Australia have brought before the Australian government with these new strict regulations

You have exactly ZERO argument here Jeff. Give one good reason why these animals can't either be sold within Australia, or processed here and then shipped off shore? This argument is in NO WAY about causing harm to Farmers. "what do you think is going to happen when, Aussie farmers don't bother growing any sheep ,or do you think food comes from supermarkets ,and McDonald heads up he doesn't have a farm" Do you even know what percentage of Animals that are produced here are shipped overseas? Do you know a single thing about this topic other than FARMER GOOD OTHER SIDE BAD? If that's the case I hope I can see you commenting on every single new story about how Coles and Woolworths rip off Australian farmers every single day?
