@Morbid Angel is better than Death what's your problem ? Is that all about giving the man the nickname ? So ok, he's not godfather of death metal, he didn't consider the bands genre as desth metal at all. I believe it's all about the music and the thing we can learn and shit we can discuss about. \m/

@Morbid Angel is better than Death Dude, don’t get upset. I’ll grant you that Possessed/MA/Necrophagia have works that predate SBG (I consider Sepultura and Hellhammer as more thrash than death)... but Chuck eventually outgrew and outshone these acts. Death’s 90s output especially, shat all over them.

Ya no matter what this morbid angel guy says, Chuck is known as the godfather of death metal. It's a fact. Though other bands later considered to be death metal had some LPs out first, Death was the first to be pure Death Metal. Possessed was very much Thrash.

"This is weird." This is progressive death metal. The answer to your final question of what is death metal, is yes, and no. Yes, in the sense that death metal usually revolves around themes of death, and no because lyrical themes never make a genre. The origin of the term "death metal" comes from one of two places. The band Possessed's debut demo 1984 was called "Death Metal." They played a far more aggressive and extreme version of death metal mixed with thrash metal. Likewise, Death (the band you just listened to), released their debut demo in the same year called "Death by Metal." A lot of the early death metal acts did indeed base their lyrics around themes of death, but that is not a requirement for the genre. The albums that proceeded Symbolic, specifically their first two, 1987's "Scream Bloody Gore" and 1988's "Leprosy" dealt heavily with themes of death and also had a more aggressive sound. They slowly became more and more progressive and their lyrics tended to deal with themes of a philosophical nature rather than morbid. The thing that matters most about genres is how it sounds and not what any of the lyrics mean. Death metal has a specific sound, it's in the harsh growling vocals that often make the singer sound like a zombie, the riffs, the barrelling drums, etc. There are loads of death metal bands that don't sing about morbid themes. Chuck's voice is one of the most iconic voices in death metal--in all of metal. RIP. But if you want some truly bizarre and out there vocals, try the band Demilich.

Alex! This is my favorite song of all time! One of my favorite albums of all time as well. From the moment I saw the thumbnail, I knew you would love the lyrics if not anything else. I'm glad you liked the line "the open wounds expose the importance of our innocence". The lyrics gained really important meaning to me after a good friend of mine took his own life about 4 years ago now, and I suddenly felt as though I was much older and that the innocence of youth was fading. Lots changed around that time, and especially me loving this song more than ever. I found myself astounded by the musicianship and the profound words of Chuck Schuldiner, the frontman (and basically the heart and soul of the band throughout its career). That line "savor what you feel and what you see, things that may not seem important now, but may be tomorrow" gets me every time. He's saying don't let life pass you by without taking in all of the great things around you, and be appreciative of the good in your life. It helped me through a dark period, I hope you enjoy more Death in the future. By the way, that riff at 8:30 is a BITCH to play on guitar over and over and over like that you literally feel like you're dizzy from playing it over and over to end the song like that. Also, by the way, the "death metal" term really has less to do with the song lyrics and subject matter but more just the musical style. Death started as a normal death metal band that sang about gore, but progressed into a more technical death metal band as time went on, and Chuck's songwriting and technical proficiency got better. Learning the distinctions between the metal subgenres sonically is a whole other ball game, so if you really wanna know what makes death metal death metal... I am not your guy. I just know it when I hear it at this point.

I'd say Seeds of hate may be a good example what they represent or even Another lesson in violence. From their newer stuff, definitely more aggresive and musically more complex -imo- but Dukes is hard to swallow at first.

So glad you liked Death - Symbolic! I remember when I first heard that song and album 22 years ago like it was yesterday! The vocalist Chuck was very philosophical. They’re one of the more progressive/technical death metal bands. Death metal can have lyrics about anything, but death and gore and horror are common themes. For an E band I highly recommend ERRA - Skyline! You won’t regret it! (Or any song from ERRA, they’re so badass)

The name 'Death' was a tribute to singer/guitarist/founder Chuck Schuldiner's brother Frank, who died in a car accident at 16, when Chuck was 9. His parents bought him a guitar to help him cope with the grief.

Hey Alex! Death is generally considered to be one of two bands that invented Death Metal in the late 80s. Their first album "Scream Bloody Gore" was conceived as the soundtrack to pretty gory horror movies that founder and leader Chuck Schuldiner enjoyed watching. The lyrics were about death, blood and mutilation and the like. So that is basically the core of the genre. Gory horror for the joy of the shock. But Death soon outgrew this. As early as the second album Leprosy there was the song "Pull the Plug" which is about Chuck Schuldiner's brother who had died tragically. For a while he was on life support with no hope for recovery, a traumatic experience for the family. From there it got ever more philosophical. Ok, it mostly revolved around philosophical matters of life and death so the death part was never abandoned, but it was no longer gory and no longer about the horror movie aspect.

@@stain6669 I think never enough is mainstream and linear. This song sounds just like any Evanescence song... And there is nothing amazing in this song. But a song like Chasing The Dragon, Kingdom of Heaven or Consign to oblivion are the best way to show how great is this band. Never Enough is not so representative of Epica. Not saying that it's not a good song... But I hope, that if he choose Epica, it will be an other song...
