In the 1970s, women still weren't allowed in public bars. This ABC reporter ventured in to see what the men of the time thought about it. #RetroFocus
Thanks to RetroFocus we are looking back on Australia's drinking culture while Shaun Micallef goes on his personal journey to discover the new face of alcohol in Australia. He is confronted by the highs and lows of alcohol consumption and the changing shape of our national pastime. #OnTheSauceTV

Kind of off topic but the first thing I noticed was how similar their accents sounded to British ones to me- I thought they were in the UK until I realized this was featured by the ABC. Nowadays the distinction between accents is much clearer, to me anyway.

Just LV the accents " let up" have not heard that slang since my grandmother use to use it I can understand why there was the lady saloon

Back then it wasn’t acceptable to swear in front of women, now women swear more than men.

Definitely not I remember back 1972 I was about 16 years women were definitely not aloud in public bars with men till the 80s they did it and still do course disruption amounts patrons especially around night Clubs unfortunately it's a difference world now women think there above men nar not by a long shot us men are world best Australians bar drinkers by far have one for the road 👍👍👍👍

I was 20 then with long hair. Male. Probably would not have been served in that bar either. Thank goodness those days are gone.

Arrr the good ole days. Should be more places like this today! Men should be allowed to have their own spaces free of women. And vice versa.

it’s strange. it seems as though the men want to respect (?) the women that come in but are disrespectful when doing so. honestly they probably use “respect” as a mask for their misogyny
