Dr. Abdolkarim Soroush, a native from Iran and one of the most influential liberal Islamic thinkers, talks about the "Modern Islam and the modern West" in his interview with the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE):
- Many in the West would argue that the combination of "modern" and "Islam" is a contradiction. So let me ask you directly: is a "modern Islam" possible?
- In the West we had the Enlightenment. For the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, the Enlightenment was the emancipation of the human consciousness from an immature state of ignorance. Does the Islamic world need a comparable process as the Western Enlightenment?
- Where do you see the role of the West in the process of modernising Islamic societies?

خدا نگذره از سروش که درسیه روزی ما نقش مهمی داشته ..اگر اندکی یا به اندازه یک سرسوزنی اخرت را قبول داشته باشه ..از این موهبت بزرگ فضای مجازی باید حلالیت بطلبد ..چون اونجا را شنیدم خودطرف داوری خواهد کرد باخود پاک وسرشت پاک عمل را داوری میکند ..ارزو میکنم خودش ونسل بعدش از بزرگ وکوچکشون سالم باشن اما ارامش روان نداشته باشن

Does not interpretation presuppose an essence? When I interpret x I am trying to understand what x is essentially, am I not? There is no doubt that interpretation is coloured by subjectivites; but if there is no essence with regard to the thing interpreted then "Islam" becomes nothing more than a vehicle for my own time-bound prejudices.

accept it totally, without questioning, and those who denounce western ideologies harshly criticize it. BUT the profound question remain unanswered ! and that is a modern Islam need to be the true and real Islam applied in modern ways of life. sure, it sound simple. but its true.sadly Islamic scholar and thinker like soroush tries to mi things up. islam can be on its own and still can operate and function perfectly in modern time. so no need to learn from west or adhere to their.. but remain-

you haven't lived with Islam's idea so you don't know what is Islam . you just see some people like him talking about modern Islam. I hope you experiance Islam like we experianced. then you'll know what Islam is! . I personally wish you have it if you are intersted to have it! One day a man said that we Iranians owed a leadership to the mullahs, which I think the West also owes.

in Islamic path. that mean explaining islam via a modern language. again modernity is not universal concept. so many factor involves in defining modernity and even we can narrow down to personal factors..so trying to explain where we went wrong and what Islam should do with modern life should be independently studies without involvement of western or eastern.. i mean why now west? cause of power. we have other civilization such as Indian, Chinese.. simply its because of their prosperity...

i respect Soroush.. but he is not to the point also he is vague in some cases, he cant explain the whole picture he want to draw... but furthermore, he is bias in some of his view. eg. he say Muslim try to be critique of west.. and should do that..that is not true at all. even himself is not critique of west. but he is supporter of west. ppl in Iran are either detest the western value or love it.. and no one is after knowing what what went wrong in western civilization and ways of life.
