So he was a fish alien who turned into an egg, was found by a society but then turned to dust and then one of the members turns into Abe? I don't get this at all.

Chameleon1616 he just watched. Abe himself did not turn into the egg nor was he the fish alien. Just a astral projection if you will.

Chameleon1616 Abe was the man conducting an experiment on the egg, Langdon Caul. That's who he was before he was a fish-man. The egg turning into dust, I believe, was what triggered him to slowly start turning into the fish-man we know now since it was in his hands.

they kinda made him the gentle, relatively speaking wimpy sidekick to Hellboy in the movies. in the comics he's always been sort of a badass, just not as overt.

Abe Sapien, and his race in general, are VERY much inspired by Lovecraft's Deep Ones (from "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" in particular, but used in a lot of other Cthulhu Mythos stories). Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, and its derivations in the hands of other authors such as August Derleth and Brian Lumley, clearly inspired a lot of the Hellboy / BPRD world.

I'm *confused* ... So Abe was created by his future self's spirit possessing a man in the past? Then how was he born in the first place? And what does the aquatic Alien, & the egg have to do with anything? Or was the Alien Abe, or Abe's father? Was Abe just going back in time to witness his father reach the end of his lifecycle, & turn into an egg that would hatch Abe? Or was the Alien Abe, he becomes an egg, and then possesses the man, as future Abe's spirit witnesses? Somebody please explain!

The comics. The movies are 10% Hellboy and 90% Men In Black in terms of tone. The first movie was an adaptation of the first story arc(Seed of Destruction) with a lot cut out(and a romance sub plot added in between Liz and Hellboy).

Stop trying to link them. Mike Mignola's origin for Abe is the origin of Abe, period. Shape of Water is just Del Toro's take on Creature From the Black Lagoon, yes, Abe and the creature in Shape share the same actor. But that actor also played the dude with eyes in his palms in Pan's Labyrinth, are you going to try and link them as well?

CGI has its uses and its place in film making. The issues were because it was new, everyone wanted to use it and push the boundaries and ended up using it for things and in ways that weren't really called for. When used properly it can be very effective.
