Let's get better together!
#abetterofficial #5playfriday
Getting better as a basketball referee is an endless pursuit. This series of weekly videos is designed to help basketball officials get better. Hello again, it's Greg with abetterofficial.com where we craft video to help basketball officials get better to take control of their officiating career.
Welcome to another edition of 5 play Fridays where we look at plays, & see what we can take from them so that we can get better as basketball officials. Our focus is on rules, signals, mechanics, positioning, demeanor, communication and any other aspects of officiating that we can think of!
5 play Fridays is a weekly series with new videos releasing every Friday during the basketball season.
Make sure to hit subscribe and also the notification Bell so you don't miss out on any of our new videos.
Today we cover traveling, guarding (block/charge) and a special play that will challenge you as an official.
Hey a quick shout-out this week to:

➞ Jason Hays (Super Supporter)
For buying us a coffee this week. Very generous and much appreciated. It really helps us stay caffeinated and producing content for you. Thank you.

as we recall from the points of emphasis video for 2018, NFHS says not that there's TOO MUCH traveling being called not that there's TOO LITTLE traveling being called but rather the accuracy of traveling calls needs improvement and the way to improve our accuracy is to first identify the pivot foot. that's our first step in judging the accuracy of traveling calls.
our takeaway on the correctable error play is first of all we're concentrating on the game itself we have players in the game who we are keeping an eye on we have situations we're aware of the calls our partners have we're working as a crew we're very occupied with the game and then suddenly we're presented with a correctable error situation and it's not always easy for us to just say oh here's what happened let's do this this this this this it may be a situation where we have to replay let's say originally blue a white misses the shot blue comes down misses a shot comes down to the other end white misses a shot etc it goes down back and forth for three or four times we have to in our minds as a crew reconstruct what has happened to determine if there's a correctable error time frame that we can correct this error and how we'll proceed it's not easy but it is something we have to be prepared to do because it happens at all levels of basketball in the NBA they have correctable error situations in the NCAA they have correctable error situations and in high school they have correctable errors situations and just saying well I'm not gonna let it happen in my game a lot of ways is a cop-out thinking well I don't need to think through how to actually solve the problem because I'm gonna prevent the problem anyway you slice it the problem will arise and we need to learn how to officiate these plays

Now let's look at plays!
Today we're going to focus on two of the NFHS points of emphasis for 2018. We will start with two plays that involve traveling and then two plays that they involve Block charge and guarding.
But stick around for play number five as I guarantee it will challenge you as a basketball official.
Let's get started.

If play 2 is a travel, then every low post play is a travel, every spin move is a travel, and every spin fadeaway is a travel.(I'm saying the call is wrong.)

I tend to agree and it doesn't look like a travel when u see it live, but the pivot foot does return to the floor.

If the player does a spin move by picking up the ball when both feet are on the ground (so either foot can become the pivot foot), then it’s a legal move. If they pick up the ball with one foot on the ground, that foot has to be the pivot foot. So if they pick it up and put it back down, it is a travel.
@samuel.carlson

I can’t tell if this one she actually had picked up the ball at the time of her right foot coming down or not, but it looks smooth to me and is a questionable one for sure.

if both of the travel calls had players going straight to the basket, used the gather dribble just as demonstrated int he video, and then took the same number of steps (again as illustrated in the video) neither one would be called for travelling as they should not here, because it is not a travel.

So on play 5, do you count the three and/but ignore the foul?
@jeffwright7587
@jeffwright7587 5 жыл бұрын
Sure looks like White ball handler travels at 4:50 before the charge. He ends his dribble with right foot on the floor, then does his Eurostep move adding two more steps (putting his right foot on the floor again). Travel, don't you think?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 5 жыл бұрын
I can see why you would say that. All about when the player is ruled to have terminated their dribble.

@mattpettit9428
@mattpettit9428 3 жыл бұрын
First travel call is not a travel. Player did not pick up the ball until after her foot was planted then spins and takes two steps. That is a text book spin move and should be applauded as such.

Great work as usual Greg! I LOVE these videos. So helpful. Don't leave me hanging--what to do with the hypothetical situation you brought up: suppose White #13 had been subbed out before White brings the ball in bounds (incorrectly) after the foul? Does he get to come in off the bench to shoot his merited 1 and 1? And for extra credit, can you dream up a correctable error situation where a different player gets to shoot the merited free throws?

@@BetterOfficials In that link, the officials don't handle the correctable error properly. After the foul call on White, Blue should have shot free throws, but instead was awarded a throw-in (this is where the correctable error occurred). Then at the Blue end of the floor, the ball goes out of bounds (which is "the first dead ball after the clock has properly started", 2-10-2). As soon as the ball is put at the disposal of White for throw in (and therefore is live), it's too late to correct the error. And, the officials further botched this by resuming play with the natural result of the free throw (they should have used POI because there was a change of posession), right?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 5 жыл бұрын
Jeff I only watched most of it on my phone. They clearly made mistakes But didn't they pull a substituted player Off the Bench to shoot free throws? I guess that gives us part of the answer for your original question. Don't do what this crew did. LOL

@@BetterOfficials Even if they did pull the sub off the bench, I don't think I'd assume that is the proper thing to do since they messed up several other things with the correctable error :)

On play 4, why do lead and c rotate since the play occurs in the new backcourt?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
Nfhs mechanics has the lead if they are The Calling official & we're going backcourt to frontcourt with no free throws lead switches with the tableside official. That was a mechanic that was brought in to enhance communication and make sure the lead comes off of the end line and gets to the reporting area Nfhs said well let's just have them come table side and that way they can communicate with coaches Etc
@BetterOfficials

Here in California, since this video came out, we have been instructed to ignore this mechanic.

videos have been great but the travels are they not considering the gather step? or you may know it as the zero step, follwed by one two? i do believe there is a fiba video that does a demonstration of that spin move in travel play #2 as legal. as for the harden style one most people consider his a travel because sometimes he steps back and lands on the same foot first which is clearly a not allowed move. if considering the gather step in that one also it may be allowed if not i see your view. its not a pivot foot just because he gathers the ball hope to hear back from you... looking forward to more vids

I know this is a fairly old comment, but this is important. NFHS does not have the concept of a gather step. Once you've picked up your dribble, the next time you touch the floor determines your pivot foot (including a jump stop, which says you don't have a pivot foot)

What would've happened if on play #5 white #13 fouled out on the 3 point shot? Would he be eligible to shoot the free throws or would he be disqualified?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure exactly what you refer to here, but if a player receives a disqualifying foul while the are due merited free throws, they are disqualified and their substitute shall attempt the free throws.

So did white 13 get to shoot his 1 and 1 after blue shot the and one after the foul on the 3 point shot?
@wildjoker12000
@wildjoker12000 5 жыл бұрын
The correct sequence would be for 13 white to get a 1+1 with the lane empty, then go to the other end so blue gets their and 1 for the 3 point field goal with lane filled and you just roll on from there.

Jesus I disagree so much with these. It's not that I disagree with your explanation of NFHS interpretations, I disagree fundamentally about how the NFHS tells refs to interpret the rules. The first 2 were gather-steps, and so you wouldn't count them as a planted pivot foot. In my opinion, more leeway needs to be given on these calls, because calling it so strictly affects the flow of the game. You can see at 6:15 when he pauses the video that the player is already in his steps before the defender has planted his feet for the charge, but because NFHS is telling you to look elsewhere you completely miss it even with the video paused. The next call is definitely a charge though. What the hell is an error timeframe?? The moment the next play begins your "error timeframe" is up. NFHS shouldn't allow shit like that to be open to interpretation, creates way too much confusion for officials and players. P.S. Fuck knows why NFHS allows junior basketball to pass it backcourt of the inbound.
