in the show notes below
today we're going to get started with our lightning
round show. quick questions quick answers not a deep dive into the rules
just an emphasis on the things that we need to know
while a1 is attempting a three-point try a1 is fouled by b1 the officials rule an
intentional foul on b1 the try is successful the officials
award one free throw to a1 and the ball to team a for a throw-in were the
officials correct yes or no?
Super simple question
intentional foul in national federation of high school basketball rules what is the penalty this also applies to a flagrant foul the penalty is the same two free throws and the ball to the offended player or their eligible substitute at the spot nearest the foul except one instance three point try that is missed in that instance three tries for free throw
we need to know the rule simple and straightforward it is two free throws always always two free throws to the offended player or their substitute if they were injured and the ball to the team at the spot nearest the foul ding the one exception is if the three-point try
is missed if it's missed it's three tries for free throw to the player or their substitute and the ball for throw in at the spot of the foul it applies to intentional fouls it applies to flagrant fouls all the same simple straightforward so in our instance here the try was successful natural inclination is and won but we know what the penalty is so in this instance were the officials correct yes

Rule set question- A1 has alternating possession to start the 2nd period. A1 attempts to throw to A2, but the ball goes out of bounds without being touched or ball touching the floor inbounds. Crew ruling- Ball to B at mid court and alternating possession stays with A as the ball was not touched legally inbounds. Please review on future lightening round. Thanks. Tom Woodland

Very good. However I'll disagree with you on the question regarding adding a player to the roster / book when it is discovered later. You state its too late. However the rule book clearly states "when discovered". Case Book play 10-1-2 also says its a technical foul when discovered.

Liked this change up. Unlike other sports we better have an explanation and even a rules pule up ready to share with a coach. I like this series on more frequently seen plays. I have a suggestion. Came up 3-4 years ago in a JV match prior to a Varsity: simultaneous fouls on B1 (guarding the ball handler, on the drive) and also B2 guarding weak side post player. What is the ruling? And when I say simultaneously, I mean both whistles and arms went up identically.

Hi Devin. Good one! My first reaction is if we are unable to determine which foul happened first, then enforce both fouls.

@@BetterOfficials EXACTLY like that. But it was a JV game so 2 man. We did huddle. Well rounded partner, worked with him before and also in baseball. Neither one of us could say who had it first and we DID end up reporting both. Early in the 4th and it gave the away team a bonus opportunity the remainder of the game. It was one of those 1-In-a-Million kind of situations.

Is there a difference between the ball hitting a ref vs. a defender in this scenario? Seemed to me in another video (10 rules questions) you mention the ball being batted by the defender that it was not a backcourt violation. Can you clarify or correct me? Thanks!

@@JohnFazio1 I can't find my comment on the other video but if the ball was last touched by the defender then there would be no violation right?

@@isaiahl9183 Thanks for the reply. Sorry I was directing this more toward the host in regards to your mention of #10. I thought he had mentioned (in another video) that if the ball touches a defender in the front court then the ball is now established in the front court and it coming back to the backcourt offensive player would be a backcourt violation. But again, I could be misunderstanding. Enjoying learning some of the intricacies of the rules :).

Hey Greg, Question! How do you go about Officating a flop in High School? Great Show, Thank You!
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeryn. Well, there is no definition of flopping in nfhs Rules book. I guess our common understanding would be players embellishing. Offensive players embellish hoping to get a call in their favor. Defensive players embellish hoping to get a call in their favor. It's just a fact of life. Our job as officials is to separate fact from fiction.
@lakerfan0852
@lakerfan0852 3 жыл бұрын
Jeryn, as of now, there is no mechanic for flops in high school. It's more of a no-call or maybe a block instead of a charge if the defender bails early.

In the Intentional foul senario; it two or three shots are always awarded, do we also count the made basket, which would make it a potentially 4-pt or 6-pt play?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Score the goal. Easy to imagine A1 shoots, an Intentional Foul is ruled. Ball goes in, 2 points. Player makes 2 free throws, 2 points. Team gets the ball for throw-in. Makes a goal, another 2 points.
@milart12

Regarding 2nd scenario. Successive timeouts after time expires. Player is fouled as time expires. I have always thought that if player is fouled at or near end of game you have to decide whether foul occurred before buzzer. If you determine that foul happened before buzzer, there must still be time on the clock, however minimal, and this scenario would never arise? I have always put time back on the clock to reflect this?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
Well, you certainly are not alone in your understanding. You are making a logical conclusion that there must be time remaining. The problem is you do not know the amount of time remaining. Nfhs says you can only adjust the clock if you have definitive knowledge of the amount of time remaining, not whether there should be some amount of time that we will make a guess at. In addition, if what you are saying is correct, why would nfhs create case plays where it is not correct? 5.11.7 SITUATION A: Airborne shooter A1 is fouled by B1 with the try in flight. The horn then sounds ending the fourth quarter playing time. The ball continues its flight and goes through the basket to tie the score. Before A1 attempts the free throw as part of the fourth quarter, Team B captain requests and is granted a 60-second time-out. Team A or B captain then requests a 30-second time-out during the same dead-ball period. RULING: The second request is denied. At the end of playing time for the fourth quarter or any overtime period, successive time-outs shall not be granted. This means a time-out cannot be granted either team until the clock has run in the extra period - assuming the free throw is missed. Successive time-outs may be granted in all situations except after time has expired in the fourth quarter or any extra period.

Greg, I have a rules question. I have sifted through the Rule Book and the Case book and seem to come short of finding my answer. A1 is dribbling the ball in their front court. As they are doing so A2 runs along the base line and purposely goes out of bounds to avoid an opponent. A2 comes back inbounds and catches a pass. Is this legal? When can A2 legally touch the ball? Is it an immidiate violation?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris! It is a violation. 9-3-3 . . . A player must not leave the court for an unauthorized reason.

ball touches the top of the backboard then goes over the back of the backboard... out of bounce? or is it only out of bounce if it touches wires?

Out of bounds
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
A ball that passes over the top of a rectangular backboard is an out of bounds violation. If a ball contacts the supports for the basket, or attached wires, that is also considered an out of bounds violation.

On the play where ball hits ref and goes into the backcourt, I thought a backcourt violation could only occur if the team had team control IN THE FRONTCOURT. Is that wrong?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark! There are 3 parts of the backcourt rule. By far the most common is last to touch frontcourt first to touch backcourt. But another Section in the rule states that the team cannot cause the ball to go from the backcourt to the frontcourt and be the first to touch in the backcourt. Imagine a player catches the ball near the division line, and throw the ball forward with backspin, so the ball bounces in the front court and the player catches it in the backcourt. Now, in the play where the ball hits the ref, the ball gains frontcourt status at that moment since the ref was standing in the frontcourt. It then bounces to backcourt and a violation occurs when it is touched.
@joshmontgomery150
@joshmontgomery150 3 жыл бұрын
Is there ever a situation where you are the last to touch the ball, go out of bounds, and being the first to touch it is not legal? Seems like common sense (fans) is going to say that’s not allowed. I understand the example. What about if a player does it in the middle of a dribble?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
Correct. A dribbler cannot step out of bounds during a dribble. Other than that, always legal in NFHS.

I do have 1 question. Example. A1 goes to save a ball from going out of bounds, and as the ball is almost out of bounds, he controls the ball or taps the ball in-bounds effectively saving his own ball and then regains possession. is this legal?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
It is legal, unless you determine that the player is a dribbler. A dribbler is not allowed to step out of bounds. There is no restriction on a player being the first to touch after being out of bounds or any thing like that. There are those restrictions in other rules sets.

Making a change (adding) to the book would trigger the Technical. In the described situation A12 avoided detection so no penalty. A12 can play, but doing so would trigger the T.
