In this insightful video, join me as I have the privilege of sitting down with Swati Sinha, an incredibly experienced Kathak dancer, to delve into the captivating world of Indian classical dance. Our conversation begins with a discussion on the journey of discovering and learning about Indian classical dance forms.
Swati Sinha provides us with an introduction to Kathak, a dance form rich in history and tradition. We explore its origins and the cultural significance it holds. Swati explains how Kathak is easily understood by audiences, emphasizing its strong communicative aspect. We delve into the Natyashastra, a foundational text that serves as a base for numerous dance forms, and its influence on Kathak.
As our conversation unfolds, we explore the evolution of Kathak as an art form. Swati sheds light on the process of Sanskritisation, where elements were incorporated into Kathak to make it more accessible and relatable to a wider audience. We gain insights into the artistic choices made in adapting the form while preserving its essence and beauty.
An important aspect we address is the validity of pursuing Kathak as a career. Swati shares her experiences and perspectives on the challenges and rewards of dedicating oneself to this classical art form. We discuss the impact of passion, dedication, and the support system necessary for aspiring dancers to flourish.
Lastly, we touch upon the topic of government funding and support for dance forms like Kathak. Swati offers her insights into the current state of funding and the adequacy of resources allocated to sustain and promote Kathak and similar art forms. We explore the importance of financial support in nurturing and preserving cultural heritage.
Join us in this enlightening conversation as we delve into the beauty, history, and significance of Kathak, led by the expertise and experiences of the talented Swati Sinha.

I think 1947 was an important watershed event got Kathak. During the British colonization, Kathak was by and large under the patronage of nawabs and kings and confined by and large to royal courts, Where the emphasis was on romantic love between the patron and the dancer. With independence, Kathak extricated from the confines of palaces - by and large. This gave Kathak a new lease of life and Kathak went back to the repertoire of the bkakti poetry in Hindu, Awadhi and Sanskrit.

I really like this kathak exponent’ understanding of all Indian classical dances. Particularly when she says that all dance forms demand stamina, but differ only in where. She has a nuanced understanding of India’s dance forms. Arangetram in bharatanatyam has a 2000 year old history. In the Tamil classic Silappathigaarsm (written by Jain monk), there is a whole chapter on arangetram. This dance exponent is sophisticated and nuanced. Hats off to her for explaining some ic the basin Sanskrit was snd Urdu terms in simple English. She carries her listeners with her nicely. Kollengode S Venkataraman

Our ancestors were always about respecting the Devi Devtas in every art, science, literature and architecture forms. Kathak and related classical dance forms feature everything about paying respect and glory to our Bhagwan. It's a gesture that simple minds can never understand. Indians will become one of the greatest minds again when we'll be completely decolonised in every aspect.

Talking about how old Kathak is, we have proper mentioning of such form of dance found in our Epic Mahabharata and Ramayana. Some people also claim it's more ancient than that as the bronze dancing girl statue found in Mohenjodaro in Indus Valley Civilization was an example of Kathak dance form.

You bring such important issues and topics to your audience and with such depth and detail. Thank you so much. How I wish I had been taught all this in school and home. How bereft of culture my childhood was because of this stupid convent education. So much unlearning to do .and so much real learning . I want to apologize to my children for teaching them nothing. They are in fact bringing me to listen to you and those otber young intelligent people who are on you tube talking about our culture and history and also of current events and future. People like you are going to make the difference.

I deeply adore our classical dance systems. They are an integral part of our ancient culture and expansive heritage where music in essential and woven in to all life events an activities. Dance is a way to communicate with the Divine through movement as music is through sound. Both are forms of energy. The original exposition of music/dance were purely devotional. An obeisance to the Supreme. 🙏

this is a very important topic that every child of Bharat should know. reasonably good conversation but not proparly organised.towards the end the socio political and economic aspects are discussed very brilliantly ...the person expert speaking is ,I an sure, very good at her performance but her shastragnyan is amaturish...not very expressive verbally as is most often the case..Hindi me bola toh accha hota...English is inadequate to describe any science or art of Bharat Bharatamunis Natya sastra is a tretise on Bharatiya aesthetics .there is a beautiful documentary of 12 episodes Bharatiya Natyam by Doordarshan and one on Kathak.. which are must watch for every Bharatiya...DD docus on Bharatiya dance forms are brilliant classics

Just like decolonizing the education system is slowly becoming imperative now, the same needs to be done for the cultural forms of Bharat. As Hindus, Bhakti was and has to always be the central purpose of whatever we do. Playing to more Westernization and exploring themes that do not apply to Sanata Dharma, like women empowerment or enviromental issues (our ancestors have always given women more importance than men and they lived one with nature in the Vedic times), is not the way to go. We need to start exploring the pre-colonial and pre-Mughal Vedic period more on the Natya front as well.

Thr South-Eastern dances from Thailand,Bali & Tibetan Buddhism dance originated from Indian classical dance. They are vry similar to the Odissi dance.Indian classical dances should connect with them & perform together. South-Estern & Tibetan culture so much influenced by influence by India.Govt. of India should used this advantage to grow soft power.

I agree that mughals were invaders but i can not ignore the fact that mughal rulers had great influence and contribution to kathak as what is it today. The mild mingling of ghazal and kathak, thumri and kathak and other infusions come from the influence of mughal rulers and even musical pieces like "farmaishi paran" got its origin because of mughal influence. The "chhapke ki gat" came into existence because of the chhapka worn by the muslim women.Aamad is a persian word which means "to come" and is a part of kathak."saalami ka tukda" is another beautiful peice."ghunghat ki gat" came into existence because the kathak dancers used to cover their head with a head and wear angrakha, gharara or anaarkali dress.Wajid Ali shah wrote many many parans and also had great contribution to the growth of kathak.CLASSICAL DANCES have a lot of history involved with them.Removing certain words or gestures or practices literally eraser the history involved with it. Even great hindu maestros like Sitara devi, birju maharaj ji,pandit gopi krishna use "Riyas" because it shows the beautiful mingling of indian and persian gestures.
