One of the best pieces of advice I got was from a fellow artist who told me that people should never go to art school to learn the rules so they could follow them, but that they should go to art school to learn what the rules are so they can break them effectively. I think a lot of that applies to design work. My favorite one to break in my day-to-day work is the idea that everything has to be hierarchical; as if there's some magical outline for your design that you need to shoehorn everything into, when in reality examples exist (like yours) where the impact is completely lost by this thinking and breaking it (as you did) makes for a much harder hitting design. I think it's a good rule of thumb to know the "rules" and why they exist, but to not treat them as absolutes. No great designer or artist got there by cracking a rule book and consulting before putting brush to canvas!

Marvellous video... I've seen many videos on rules of graphic design but this has to be the best one yet. You really made it easy for us to grasp the design rules including the proper way to break it. I really learned a lot. Thanks🙏

Thanks so much!! Glad you enjoyed the twist with this one! Think it can be so overwhelming hearing designers telling you to stick to specific rules, so wanted to show how to break them well! 🥳

Love these explanations! I need to challenge myself more with breaking the rules. At 3:08 I like how my eye went from the top right, swooshed down to the headline and naturally to the button last. Great job on that layout!

Before I watched your channel / started my Instagram page, I was following those design rules as well. Seeing everyone’s work and how much freedom there was to create something was truly mind blowing to me. Usually your told it doesn’t suit the brand or it needs to be a certain style - something to make you change the style you want to create. This video was very helpful to understand the two and find a common ground between both sides.

I remember my first year of design school. I went in it having a background in fine art and did a lot of drawing. I looked at design as on in the same. Then I was hit with all these rules and noticed the students who didn’t have any art background thrived Implementing these rules. I was not a fan at all lol I was told by one of my professors that art was right brain n design is more left brain. I hated that idea. Another professor told me design is a bit of both right n left brain and idk that really helped me. Hierarchy, balance, space and all that stuff was always a part of my process I just didn’t notice it. Knowing about design rules helped me to work faster and efficient. Knowing the “rules” helped me to be a better designer but also made me realize when I was breaking the rules. That, in it self felt freeing. When things are not working in a design I wonder what rules I can break and that usually gets my creativity going.

Awesome content, not an graphic designer just a software developer looking to improve graphic skills. This reminds me of software patterns they are taught as hard rules but must be broken from time to time. A new dev does not know them well. A good dev uses them always without exceptions. A great dev knows when to apply them.

I've been wondering how subjective "Visual Hierarchy" is because my eyes went directly to the Type first on both "Shoes for the soul" graphics. But I'm pretty biased to favor typography.

I'm not a typography person but my eyes went directly for "shoes for the soul" first. I completely ignored the picture of shoes itself and I was surprised that supposed to be the focal point of the whole image because for me it was almost invisible O_O
