When I was at school I said to my music teacher that I didn't want to sing this hymn because it made me cry. He replied "So, you understand the song?" I still cry 50 years later.

Listening this song from a hospital cabin. My wife delivered our 2nd baby amid the coronavirus resurgence in Mizoram. Its amazing how the Lord abides with us. When befallen by difficulties and we thought our plans have failed, He makes us see that His ways are better than ours'. "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

I remember after a particularly rough day, after my husband died, I fell to my knees, crying and singing this song. Somehow it gave me the strength to get back up. Very grateful for that.

I'm encouraged that the Lord used the words of this hymn to help you carry on and I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Also, for the information of you and others who view this, there is another verse in this hymn that precedes the last verse and the lyrics thereof are as follows: I need Thy presence every passing hour. What but Thy grace can foil the Tempter's power? Who but Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me. The Lord will abide in life and in death. I too lost my Mum this year, 10 mths ago. I am still in pain when I think of the moments of her passing. But this hymn describes that when earth's pain ebbs away, Heaven's morning breaks. We say goodbye, but there is a grand welcoming ceremony over there.

My favorite song. Forever. My mother would sing this as a lullaby & I would fall asleep in a few minutes.. I now know why she would sing it.. looking back.. I miss her. Life is difficult but God is always faithful.

The loss of a parent is such a terrible pain, and I’m so sorry to hear you lost your wonderful mother. I’m a ‘mummy’s boy’ myself and mine is the most important person in the world to me. Rest assured, she is now at peace, and you will see her again when your time comes ❤️ I’m sure you’re making her proud

I don't know why this made me CRY, I was travelling in the college bus, and in my deep loneliness in my mind it made me realise the LOVE OF GOD. I am a Catholic, who was once lost after walking the wrong way. I fell into temptation and carried many mortal sins on my back. It left me with nothingness, no where to go to. My depression became very severe in March 2022 and I gave myself room to heal. It felt awkward as a Catholic since I once thought of leaving God for a hedonistic life. I was drowned in shame, a little bit like Judas, but in the end, a few unfortunate events in life caused me to seek refuge in God's arms. My God's arms, and no other. It was during my darkest hours, Lord Jesus appeared before me in my dreams. I cried. As I am writing this, I realised how wrong I was to leave in the first place, when my Lord had never forsaken me. I want to return to God. I want to rely on my Lord Jesus again. Everything that I have been through, I don't have the energy to carry that burden alone. I don't have the strength to carry my sins. I need Jesus to hold my hands and open my blind eyes so I can trust him again. I am coming back, Father. Your servant faithfully follows you from now on.

My wife passed away in May of 2020 and everyday without her has been an enormous struggle. Wife, best friend, confidante, soul mate, life partner, she was everything to me and she died so young and unexpectedly. Life is without joy, love and peace and I do not feel any sense of purpose or meaning. Listening to this hymn now made me weep bitterly. All the memories of my sweetheart came flooding back however the assurance that the Father is always with us and pointed to the sky and called her home when she closed her eyes on earth for the last time and opened them in Paradise for the first time, strengthens me. (Edited, please see the new paragraph) I'm not religious, but this song means a lot to me. It's always played at the Challenge Cup Rugby League final, and my Grandad always used to stand and sing it, and now he cant due to Alzheimers, so I learned to sing it for him. So, unfortunately my grandfather passed away this year thanks to the Coronavirus. This song, though not this version, was played at his funeral. I sang with eyes filled with tears. I just want to say thanks to everyone who posted nice replies to this comment. Even if I dont share your faith, your kind words really touched me. Thank you. RIP Grandad.

My name is Karl.I just read your comment.This Song means a lot to me also.My Father passed in 2017.At the Funeral Home where my Father laid in his Coffin,the Song(without the words) was played.I could'nt figure out the name until I came on this KZfaq site.I found the name.Listening to this Song with the words is even more touching.I am always reminded of my Fathers passing whenever I listen to this Song.My Father had Dementia before his passing.I am soooo sorry about your Father Alzheimer disease.I pray he gets better.Have a Blessed Day

2 years ago I suffered severe anxiety and depression so much that I wished and prayed for death at all time, and had suicidal thoughts as well. I heard this song playing over the radio, and that was the beginning of my life changing encounter with God. He abides with us always no matter the situation.

I have told my husband that this is the hymn that I would like played at my memorial service …. I am not having a funeral, just a small family affair …. This became my favourite hymn when I was going through an extremely traumatic time in my life when I was in my late twenties. My best friend died from cancer in july. He was such an important person to me and still is. I miss him more and more and each day. We went through highs and lows, he was always by my side, no matter what. He would do anything to make me happy, to make me feel safe. I played this version at his funeral. I hope that grief will get better someday. I will never ever forget him and will always love him. Audrey, you are truly gifted. Thank you for this beautiful version.

My beautiful mum adored this hymn and told me repeatedly, many years ago, it was her favourite and that she wanted it to be played at her funeral. She sadly passed away last week, and upon looking for a version befitting of the occasion and the lovely gentle soul she was, I found this, Audrey's incredible recording. It will be played at the funeral next week, and I cannot be more thankful to have found it. Mum would have thought this was perfection. Thank you.

This might be weird, and i only just read your post, even though the funeral was over a month ago, I'll keep you on my prayer list that the Lord will comfort and continue to comfort you during this difficult time. I pray that His Holy Spirit will give you a peace so great that only you know is from Him. I did not know you mom, but I look forward to meeting her one day when with The Lord Jesus.

My Father died of Tubercolosis, he wanted to get well again but couldn't...... And left for permanent abode..... He wanted this song to be sung in his funeral so we did.... Dad we miss you... Thank you so much for your prayers... From Mom and me... And Thank you girl.

Thank you for sharing this gorgeous arrangement. You have captured the connection that we have with the Holy Spirit. When my beautiful son died, I was lost. I sat in front of the piano and sang this hymn, & also "Great is Thy Faithfulness" over and over. It was what kept my eyes on HIM and not the horrible circumstances of what I have had to face. I leaned on HIM & I AM ALIVE because of hymns like this. This reminds me that HE took my sins & my burdens on the cross. The Father is so good. Psalm 30:11-12 "You have turned my sorrow into joyful dancing. No longer am I sad and wearing sackcloth. I thank you from my heart, and I will never stop singing your praises, my LORD and my God". Fight with HIS sword of truth, & when in doubt, cry it out. HE is always listening. Love to all of you. 💕💕

I heard this hymn my mother sang sitting on her bed before she slept.. I love it. It brings many memories of her beautiful life when I listen this now. Yesterday was her death anniversary. I heard it many times Thanks. You sang it beautifully.

Revelation says that the overwhelming majority of the earth's population will have been killed by then, and that without His return cutting short the time of the Tribulation the entire human race would have been wiped out. Additionally, Jesus is bringing eternal peace only to those who know Him and accept Him as their savior but He's not returning as an amazing world-leader who will bring political, cultural and religious unity and peace - that's what the Antichrist will do, before letting everyone know that they've been tricked and he's out to kill, steal and destroy.

This has always been a favourite hymn of mine. It means more to me now since my dad passed away a couple of weeks ago. I am a full grown adult and I feel so helpless. It seemed like nothing could bring him down. Until a freak accident where he fell off his bike took him from us. I hurt when I dwell on it. I think that will keep happening for a while yet. But I find myself singing this song when I'm at my lowest and somehow I can pull through for one more minute, one more hour, one more day. I'm glad to know it. Thank you for posting.

Lost my Grandmother due to covid-19. Whole family got infected somehow we all recovered. I was raised by my grandmother. It's been so hard to live without her. Where is death's sting ? I lost my father on Christmas Eve, save to say it will never be the same. However, he had faith in Jesus Christ and I know he is now experiencing bliss we here on Earth can’t even imagine. While I miss him terribly, I take refuge in the Lord and know I will see my father again. Praise be to Almighty God and His only begotten Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! If anyone else comes across this comment please know above anything else you are loved and cherished by a loving Father in Heaven. I know He abides with me every minute of every day. I love you Dad and can’t wait to see you again.

Jason, there is a wonderful God Who created you and loves you and desires a relationship with you. So much so that he died with your sins and mine so that we might be saved. As I said many years ago to my atheist, physician husband, " If there is a God, and where you spend eternity is determined by what is in the bible, don't you think that it is worth looking into? " He took a long pause and said, " yes." It took him a couple of years, but he did and for 20 yrs he's been a pastor. If you have any desire to know the living God and truth, ask and He will show himself to you. Get yourself a King James Bible, start in the Gospel of John and go forward from there. Jesus said, " What shall it profit a man if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul? After months of matches 2 teams will fight it out to win this trophy starting at 3pm on a hot Saturday in May, but without fail since 1927 at 14:45 everyone in attendance at Wembley will sing this hymn. Its one of those curious things, not so much now but up till the nimeties everyone in stadium would sing along, gives me goosebumps every single time.

This song is Beautiful. Thank you for singing it. I liked the 3rd and 4th verses, it is different than the one I learned when I was younger. I am a soldier so especially liked the 3rd verse: "I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory? This is beautiful and is helping me through my grandmother’s death. She made it to the age of 95 and was in good health until the last year or so of her life, so I am grateful for that but it doesn’t stop it being really hard. I was very close to her and she was a friend to me as well as my grandmother. I will always love you Granny. ❤

It is my understanding that this hymn was written by Reverend Henry Francis Lyte as he was dying from Tuberculosis. He also wrote music for it, but it is most often sung to the tune "Eventide" by William Henry Monk. The hymn brings great comfort in times of sorrow.
