Ableton PUSH - how to open and clean TPE sticky rubber coating and inside

How to open and remove sticky rubber coating from Akai/Ableton PUSH, step by step. This deterioration is common for items with so called “soft touch” finishes.
Products that work on de-glueing the surface:
Ethanol, Alcohol.
Probably works on other products like Akai MPC Live, as it has the same type of coating.

I really appreciate this video. After trying a few different cleaners, I used 70% alcohol, goo gone and naptha (lighter fluid) but the best cleaner by far was cooktop cleaner, also called glass stovetop cleaner. The brand I used was Easy-Off (Canada) but I bet any brand of Stovetop cleaner would work - NOT oven cleaner. You need something mildly abrasive to get the TPE coating off. I found with just alcohol that the coating would just spread around. Save yourself some time - it still took me like 3 hours.

@@xaosm_os @xaosm_os Maybe he is trying to say, that reviewers never talk about the sticky material of the gear. Luckily Push 3 finally doesn't seem to have it anymore. The surface seems to be all metal without any rubber overlay :)

I hope they didn't use the same coating on the Push 3. This stuff is terrible after a few years.

Thanks for sharing! I used an Oven/stove cleaner, called "Antigrasa" in Mexico for cleaning the main body. It worked perfectly, was easy to clean and the material stayed intact. Looks like new. Another Tip: Make sure you cleaned the display window perfectly. It's hard to see stains on it, but once it's built in every little speck becomes visible.

I just bought a used one, it is coated in DNA and TPU that is sticky. I should write a song about it, using the to inspire from its realism in regards to it feeling like trying to pick my nose after drywalling a entire house and sanding all the furniture. It is sticky like how hairs stick to my purple helmet for some reason.. Might end up painting it and writing caustic toxic emails to ableton's paint dept specifically, or sending em a copy of the song! Haha Thanx for sharing your lesson about how to de-velcro the device. Rock on.

thanks mate! yes it was getting sticky and ugly.. it can look daunting task to do, but after opening it up and passt the first look, its an OK step by step which I thought could help some people out.

I fixed mine but I sand it with a very fine grain and water. Result is very good, both visually and at hand contact. I prefert it now over the state out of the box.

I used Goo Gone very generously and rubbed it in vigorously. It took awhile, but worth it because it was very sticky after many years. def take Push apart for ease. Push 2 is only sticky on the sides, you don't need to take it apart

The new Push 3 no longer has the rubberised surface.

Thanks, it kinda works on my Push2. It comming off in some places, but not all. Either way, it's not horribly sticky anymore...yay

Great video. However, it's worth noting that you can clean about 99% of the gunk without opening it up. I used a combination of WD-40 and cheap deodorant spray with a microfiber cloth for this task and it worked a charm. Doesn't look as perfect, but made Push enjoyable to use once more.

I got my Push 2 out today for the first time in months and was dreading the possibility of having spilled liquid on it or something when I discovered the stickyness, thinking I might have to open it up! Relieved to discover it's just their crappy coating degrading and nothing serious. Still stinks that it's doing this for everyone!

I managed to get mine completely shiny. It just takes a bit longer. I did it with toilet paper instead of a rag and used actual isopropyl (I'm from Germany and didn't have any problems getting it) I could really see that the black parts of the toilet paper won't clean worse but not at all. And it took on the black stuff pretty fast in the beginning. So besides taking a new piece of toilet paper often enough, I had to make sure to move the toilet paper under my finger often enough so I don't use an already black spot on it and just spread the dirt.

I wish manufactures would STOP putting this sticky coating on stuff! It's nice and grippy at first but it degrades quickly and makes a mess!

Thank you for sharing this how to. I have a couple of pad which almost lost its sensibility. Do you think cleaning pads from the PCB side could help restore pads sensibility?

An update. I just finished assembling the Push back. After this cleaning, all tabs sensitivity is normal again

@@catoleg yes, cleanup should be enough, the dirt under the pads is making it loose contact i suppose.

Awesome tips, thanks for this! You mentioned that some people painted their Push - I took a look around and couldn't find any pictures of custom painted ones. Do you have any links to examples?

you can potentially spray paint the chassis or apply some other type of paint. I don't remember saying that, but maybe i've seen something, in which case i forgot where :)

I guess it would need to 1st have the TPU removed with a acidic type of chemical that wont eat the soft metal casing. Van Halen edition paintcode or something? Maybe vehicle wrap material? Hydrodipping it? Glow in the dark paint?

Wow, brave. On what setting? Can anyone else back this up? I’m paranoid about the heat warping the plastic. Is a Push really dishwasher safe..?

It would be nice if manufacturers could just stop using this TPE coating crap. It is a well known fact this garbage goes sticky after a while. It's happened to every single TPE-coated piece of gear I've ever owned. I no longer buy gear that has any of this crap on it.

hey, i didn't address that because mine sufficed a wipe with a cloth. I would not add water, but maybe alcohol/ethanol 100% that dries up quickly right after and doesn't leave marks/stains.

@@xaosm_os Not a good idea to use solvent to clean the carbon pads. Damp rag would suffice if it's absolutely needed.

@@xaosm_os it's not so much about the alcohol not evaporating, but rather the chance that it could dissolve the carbon if rubbed over.

Seriously Though we all know how crap that rubber finish has been on variuos audio items in the past. WHY DO they evn use it....ABLETON...just make thw WHOLE Push(3) non sticky forget the coayings...

Using Dasty spray is much easier! you do not have to take the Push apart. Use a micro fiber cloth, spray Dasty on it and rub the TPE coating off. Just like I did with the sticky CDJ1000 ring.

Open it and clean is the best way. I tried to spray on top of the machine and it ruined the plastic sheet under the pad that with carbon on it. Now, my push is no longer in function.

Ableton Push 2 was my worst music device purchase ever. I will never buy any hardware from them. Sticky rubber, sticky pads, it's awful in every way. And it was not under warranty anymore so I just wasted $600.
