Ableton's warping function lets you change the pitch and speed of audio independent of each other. It's both a utility and a creative effect. In this video, we'll look at the various warp modes, what they do, and why you might reach for one over the other.

something I love doing is taking one of my older songs and throwing the final export into a new project in Live. Turn on warp texture mode, setting the grain size to around 20 -30 and the flux to zero. Then stretch it as far as it can go. Consolidate. Then set that new sample to a different warp mode and squish it as small as it can go. consolidate. then stretch it again. consolidate. then squish. and just keep repeating that. I call it kneading the song to extract a butt load of new textures and samples. Depending on what your original song sounded like you can even get some nice bass drones to use as a base atmosphere for an ambient track.

In case it helps, here's how I think about formants: The sound of your voice starts from vocal cords, which vibrate at the pitch that you're singing. That sound then goes through your throat and mouth which emphasizes certain frequencies. Those are the formants. It's like the shape of your mouth is an EQ applied to your vocal cords. We humans are very good at discerning these two things from each other, which is how we can recognize someone's unique voice even when they speak or sing at many different pitches. If you simply pitch shift an entire vocal sample without compensating the formants, it sounds like both the vocal cords and the shape of the head have changed. The latter, which causes the chipmunk effect, makes it sound like a *different person* singing. If you want to change the pitch of a vocal sample but have it still sound like the same person, you need to adjust the formants back. That way the vocal cord pitch changes, but the EQ effects of the throat, head, and mouth on the sound still emphasizing the original frequencies. (And conversely, if you change just the formants and not the pitch, it sounds like a different person singing the same notes.)

Informative video! I got a lot out of it. One thing I like doing in beats mode is taking a beat loop that is a bit too busy, setting it to forward only and preserving 16th notes while reducing the transient amount down from 100 to half or even lower. You can use that as a layering tool to make generic beats way more interesting while keeping the rhythm tight!

Great stuff man. I've pretty much just used complex pro to slow stuff down that I'm trying to learn to play on guitar. The other modes were always fun to play around with but I never bothered to learn what they are actually doing. Thanks for all you do!

This is great! I've been trying to work with ableton at home and every time I open it up I feel like a baby with power tools. I can't begin to understand how to use them to make a birdhouse let alone a shed.

Hey...I see you mentioned Data Bender and Morphagene....do you use these two modules 'together'? I ask because I'm looking at adding some 'sampling/mangling' to my modular setup and these two together looked like they could accomplish alot.

@@JB61264 I'm sorry for the length of this, I just want to be thorough. So yes, I do actually. Morphagene is pretty weird to get used to though, It was my first module I got several years ago and I still have a print out of the button controls next to my system. So look out for that. But the way it mangles audio is my favorite. I don't typically send audio thru it, I pre-load stuff into the sd card then send that to my effect modules. I've been wanting to get a DAW like Reaper so I can add in splice points before I put the files on the sd card cause adding them while morphagene is playing them is tricky because you have to be on time. I'm not the best with timing so I don't usually record into it. So that's a me thing. But when everything is all loaded up I'll just play with the knobs of morphagene by hand. It's really fun when you have it clocked, you can get some interesting sounds out of it. And when it comes to data bender. That thing is just really fun if you like glitchy stuff and some interesting distortion. The bend parameter does resemble morphagene, especially when you're in the second mode, but you don't have as much control as you do with morphagene. which is fine for me, that's why I've kept it. So to get to the point, I think the two of them together has been great for my system. Especially if you have some reverb and/or delay in the mix. If i'm using morhpagene as the sound source, the signal path is usually, Morph>Modulated Reverb or Delay>Data Bender>Slight Delay or Reverb.

@@JB61264 Well morphagene can record in real time. I just haven't messed with it too much yet, so I can't say how well that aspect of it performs. But the squid and DLD seem a bit cheaper and more straight forward and less likely to make wacky stuff unintentionally like the morphagene tends to do. So whatever you think will best fit within your system is probably the better move.

Is Push/Push 2 good for quick, hands on experimenting with warp modes on regular audio tracks, or would you have to load the audio into Simpler to access the warp engine from Push?
