Learn how to bring your programmed MIDI to life using some basic tools in Ableton Live. Use Ableton's Grooves and the Velocity MIDI effect to easily add groove to any part.
Humanization is a great way to add life to your programmed MIDI by adding subtle, semi-random variations to your velocity and timing. In this video, I'll take a look at a quick and easy process for humanizing your MIDI parts in Ableton Live to add natural feeling and groove to your music production.
🗒 VIDEO NOTES
I forgot to mention in the video, but all the processes used (Grooves and the Velocity MIDI effect) are non-destructive and applied in real-time to your clips so you can always go back and make adjustments or remove the humanizations completely.

One thing that really helps is when a real drummer is playing, they’re going to intentionally or unintentionally hit the hihat harder on the down beats and softer on the upbeats. When I was learning drum set I was taught to always accent downbeats (1,2,3,4) and put a grace note on the up beats (& of every beat). It really really really changes the sound from square to groovy.

Try this tip: On the closed hi-hat sample, randomize the start position very slightly, use a m4l effect mapped fot that. You'll be surprised by the result ( only with some few samples it don't work well )
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 5 жыл бұрын
Great tip. You can do it pretty easily if you're using a sample in Sampler, because Start Time Offset is one of the parameters you can set to an LFO. Also works great when making synth sounds; if you modulate the Start Time slightly you can get subtle changes in texture and tuning which are really interesting.

Love this video, very helpful! What about using the velocity parameter in the groove setting, instead of the midi velocity effect? Isn't it the same thing?
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 6 жыл бұрын
No, not entirely. The Velocity parameter within any Groove is dependent on whether or not that Groove file actually has an Velocity information, and many don't. So you'll see that in a lot of the Grooves (for example any pf the Swing Grooves) adjusting the Velocity parameter will have no effect. So the Velocity MIDI Effect is a much more reliable way of control the Velocity.

Great. Your tutorial seems to demonstrate the method for instruments based on Ableton's sampler. Is there a different method for non-proprietary instruments? How about, for instance, using Neptune from your ANLG bundle? ;)
@ELPHNT

Nope, exactly the same no matter what instrument you use, 3rd Party, or built-in, synthesizer, sample or drum machine, as long as it receives MIDI it all works the same.

@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 6 жыл бұрын
Hmm... 🤔 Can you give me a bit more info? What happens when you try to drag them? Do you get some kind of icon indicating that you can't drop them or does it let you drop them onto the Clip but then they just don't get applied. Are the Grooves showing up in the Groove Pool? The more info you can give me the easier it'll be to help you out, thanks 😊

ELPHNT I get an Icon telling me I can't place it there. The only way they appear in the groove pool is when I double click a groove, but it won't affect the midi clip I selected

Once the Grooves are in the Groove Pool, if you double-click on a MIDI Clip then go to the bottom left where you find the Clip Box - can you select a Groove from the Groove Dropdown there?

interesting video. but abeton random isn't really human random. humans don't really randomize velocities and position the way ableton does it. there's a completely different process. that's why ableton random always feels well...random, in a inhumane kind of way.
@piotr803
@piotr803 4 жыл бұрын
@@Churro_Flaminguez I can agree that it adds randomness, but not humanity. And at small enough amount it might be quite adequaty and effective, and not be distinguishable for most from actual human variation. The way humans "randomise" however, isn't really based on pure white noise random type distribution, which is what Ableton does, and that's my point. Check out work by Holger www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4246955/

It can't be this difficult. I should just be able to right click on the track and set my humanize level. Not of the tips in this video worked and even if they did i'm not sure I would want to take the painstaking time to humanize in this way for EVERY, SINGLE, TRACK.
