The vocoder effect, not to be confused with a talkbox, is a very powerful stock Ableton effect. In this video, I show you a few tips and tricks on how to get that classic vocoder vocal sound and also show you how to use a vocoder to add texture to a simple bassline sound.

Damn that last tip with the arped randomized pitches is seriously next level. manually automating interesting/coherent filter band modulation is so tedious, and this is the antidote! I also just love the concept of converting oscillator pitches into filter bands, it's so elegant. Like you could modulate a melody or bassline with an outtake harmony or something. You could prob fatten the randomized sound up even more by adding octaves or fifths in the other oscillators, or create wobbles with glide/pitch modulation. Gonna have to try that...
@jhubertful

This might also be an application where modulating vocoder's attack and release times could really shine

+Josh Hubert oh! Some really cool ideas on this comment! I never thought to pitch bend. Adding 5ths would be easy with a chords midi effect.

In the past, I've used the vocoder to have a percussive chord instrument. I routed the chords into the vocoder, and had the modulator as a drumbeat. It makes this cool sound that I've called the Vocodrum

Good job mate, Ableton Vocoder is one effect I rarely use. After watching this I’m definitely going to dive deeper into what it can do, I may do a tut myself with a vocoder on pads, using a square wave as the modulator gave the sound a nice rounded feel, would be great for pads, thanks again 👍
