I added larger capacity batteries to my battery backup for extended runtime. I should be able to get 5 times more runtime with this setup.
Equipment needed:
Phillips screwdriver
Wire cutter/stripper/crimper
Anderson SB50 connectors (either solder or crimp to the wires)
1/4" ring terminals
1/4" nuts, bolts, and washers
35ah 12 volt battery x 2
ATC/ATO Water-resistant Fuse Holder - 10 AWG with 30 amp fuse
10 AWG wire, red and black, about 3 feet each
Drill with 1/2" hole saw

a bit of advice. Change the fuse to a 30 amp one. Internally these cyber power units are fused at 30 amps. 20 amps will blow under full load. ran mine off two lawn and garden battery's for alittle over a year and that netted me 70 minutes of run time at 200 watts then degraded quickly from there. so VRLA is the way to go for sure. Looking into doing a lithium upgrade for it. Also the damn thing will need cooling if run longer than a hour. The transformer can handle the heat the switching supply can't.

Great idea...but also a great way to burn down your house. Why? Cuz the circuits inside the Cyberpower consumer-grade UPS are only rated to deliver power for a short period of time. After that, they get too hot and fry, perhaps frying your PC or your house. Also, the unit's charging circuits are similarly capacity-constricted, so when charging bigger batteries, the charging circuits may fail, or may fail to fully charge the bigger batteries. These hacks should ONLY be done with commercial UPSs, which are rated for 100% duty cycle.

That is a good point. I run it at 20% load or less. Overheating could be a problem at higher loads.

Meh install a small pc fan in there and dont run it over capacity and you’ll be more than fine. The world isn’t.

Burningdown a house. No only if the thing gets shorted. they will thermally run away on you yes but it will blow the internal fuses first or just blow a fet out. Have had it happen.

Also for such large capacity battery's you would want to invest a external charger. it took mine over 48 hours to charge the battery's. something like a 3 amp max battery tender will do wonders and a high amp diode will keep the unit from cooking the internal charger.

I am doing a LFP upgrade on a pure sine model. I thought about using a shottky (cheap but voltage sag) or ideal diode (expensive for 20-30amps) and this will still backfeed the internal charger like you said but why would that matter? The best option would be to disable the internal charger, I cannot find any videos on this. The low voltage cuttoff is another issue but I think the only problem here is that you will not get any warning before the UPS shuts off when on batteries and it may shut off way before the batteries are drained. I used to use a deep cycle marine battery but it did not last long. I checked it after 3 yrs and it was down to 10.7 volts, dead. Probably because the charger in the UPS isnt designed to desulfate such a large battery.

Update: it turns out that some UPS chargers work on timers based on expected battery size. This may be why my lead acid battery was damaged from improper charging by my Cyperpower 1500 PFC pure sine UPS.

At that point, I might consider just getting a power inverter, large deep cycle battery, and charger instead of a dedicated UPS.

For the Anderson, is the wire on it 12 awg 200C wire? Gonna do this project since it is a good idea for extra power.

Use 10 or 12 gauge depending on how much amps you plan on drawing.

It's been over 2 years now, have you had to replace the batteries yet? And if not, have you tested them recently to see if they're still holding a charge? I'm looking to do this mod, but more so I don't have to replace the battery every two years or so than for capacity's sake, as my current rig WAS getting more than an hour before the latest set of LABs I got for it burned out.

I have not had to replace the batteries. It has been working fine. handled the recent power outage without any issues. I have not specifically tested the capacity with a meter.

Some UPS have digitally controlled hardwired how long charge takes , so you don't get a large batterypack recharged. I don't know which model does . Does this Cyberpower 1500AVR charges until will fully charged or a predefined time ?
@AlanSNasar
@AlanSNasar 2 жыл бұрын
It seems to charge the batteries fully. I haven’t drained them completely though.
@CotyRiddle

They constantly put out 13.8 volts even when fully charged and are limited to 700 mhA. This is the reason why the factory battery's only last for about a year. It slowly cooks them into submission. it will constantly float the charge and there is no cut off time. There is no cut off or time limit to it. They are designed to "have it ready at all times"

@@CotyRiddle Could incorporating a BMS module help keep from cooking off the batteries over time?
@KiraSlith
@KiraSlith Жыл бұрын
@@dustinmeier9753 The BMS would have to cut off the input voltage without making the controller think the battery has failed. This is why you can't use LiFePo batteries in these, as nice as one of those would be for this situation...

Nice ! Is it still working ? Did you tried testing by having a blackout , and recharge the batteries ?
@AlanSNasar
@AlanSNasar 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, still working fine. I have had only short power outages of about a half hour to an hour or so far. I believe it will work for 8 to 10 hours.

Nice mod. How much run time did it increase?
@AlanSNasar
@AlanSNasar 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't run them down completely, I would estimate at least 4x the run time if not more. It depends somewhat on the load.

Nobody told that a UPS running from 24V DC, with a 1500VA maximum power feed can draw 60A? You 20A fuse will blow in no time! 20A at 24V is barely 500W. You obviously know very little in electronics/electricity. You should not mess with something unless you understand it. 9Ah batteries will get you maybe 5 minutes worth of power at full load. These batteries will get you maybe to 15-20 minutes at full load...no more! Even at 50% load, you can't expect anymore than 30-45 minutes before your batteries drop below 20-22V.

@AlanSNasar 9 ай бұрын
I am using 35ah batteries instead of original 9ah batteries. You are correct about the fuse, it will limit to about 400w. This is for safety. This should be run at 20% load for safety and will last for multiple hours. I use it for router, modem & switches and it has worked well for years.
