Respect for both of them. Japanese Hitoshi Kiyama predicted all Garry's beautiful kicks and seemed to be somehow a little bit better. Garry fall few times.

I think it is also important to notice Kiyama was about 20+kgs heavier than O'Neil so he used that extra to advantage good. O'Neil's punches are really strong for his weight but against Kiyama here they weren't as effective in the last round. And because in this tournament he was one favorite fighter he had tough matches against bigger fighters too So when he came to Kiyama, Kiyama was too fresh and strong.

Garry has great technical skill. But in the heat of battle, timing is more impotant.Great to watch spinning kicks but only if they connect.Still Garry is an exceptional Karateka! Bruce Anthony.

@Peppim yes.. you are true.. punching the face knocks out the opponent faster. but try testing the portion which is an inch diagonally above your solar plexus by the first two knuckles of your fist..then, ribs are not only on the side..beside the solar plexus to a few inches below you can still target the vulnerable part of the ribs (if you are fighting with bare knuckles)and about punching the chest, try testing an inch or two below the collar bone (I can't tell which point it is by words.. :)

@Peppim they'll definitely strike the ribs when they get a chance.. it is very difficult to hit the ribs of a fighter in kyokushin fights.. in kyokushin fights, you must be very careful. your strike must not expose your vulnerable area.. so, they pay attention to all that..

Keep feeling that kyokushin tournaments could benefit from simple takedowns or clinches, like san-da or muay thai, from an entertainment perspective, to break the ridiculous monotony and inefficacy of lean-forward body punching.
@IceyAces
@IceyAces 8 жыл бұрын
+dogwink inefficiency, lol. You clearly have not ever experienced kyokushin karate. Entertainment purposes I can live it tho
@dogwink
@dogwink 8 жыл бұрын
@IceyAces: I meant to use 'inefficacy'. Also, my intention wasn't to disparage Kyokushin body punches as being weak, but that in the distance and in the context that they are used, clinch attacks, throws, and takedowns would be more efficient comparatively.

@busyrightnow7259 To me, the clinch range body punching looks just as scrappy--almost mindless brute force. It's like they have no other option in the rules but to devolve into this behavior. IMO, ref should at least break it up and reset, just like they do in boxing.
@dogwink
@dogwink 3 ай бұрын
@busyrightnow7259 First, I need to understand how you define "scrappy", so we don't just "talk" over each other on different frequencies. To me, scrappy fighting is disorganized/chaotic fighting, like kyokushin's extended clinch distance body punching, which is conceptually similar to the pro slap competitions. Second, I need repliers to understand that my original comment was on entertainment value, not validity of the martial art. Therefore, the comment about Garry fighting Bannan is irrelevant to me. I already know and respect Kyokushin to be badass and want people to watch it more.

Although looking at Gary's other fights he is clearly one of the best fighters ever, in this fight he was simply being lazy. I mean, he wasn't even trying. It's like he was conserving his energy for the next ten rounds or something.

man, Neil looked like a prime Ali ready to outside box his opponent...except he was in the wrong sport for it. It doesn't really work if you can't pressure with the jab. Kept running backwards looking for the perfect shot, never found it, strike count must have been something like 100 to 20 for Kiyama. Very "un-japanese" unorthodox kyokushin compared to the common mantra of walk forward and trade shots until either one drops, but I almost fell asleep during the run-around routines honestly.

Interesting how O'Neil keeps bouncing around burning energy uselessly. Almost looks like a Shotokan fighter except he keeps his guard down by his waist in a very un-kyokushin manner. And what was that hands on the head thing at the end of round two? Your are supposed to stand at attention. It was like he didn't know the rules or what to expect in this rather odd fight.
@Kewlausgirl
@Kewlausgirl 8 жыл бұрын
+Cal Primo At that level of fighting!? Sure he just passed all the other fighters through the tournaments without knowing anything. It is also mainly common practice/etiquette to stand there and focus all your energy and wait. O'Neill was focusing his energy by moving around on the spot. He was also looking to his superiors on the sidelines for guidance, which is what Hitoshi did towards the end of the fight before he changed his tactics.
