I am so great full for your practice shorts! The hardest part of solo training for me is resisting my adhd, I get bored of it so fast and then I lose focus as well as interest, I basically need at least a video of what I’m supposed to be doing running on repeat to focus on. Except nunchucks, but I think that’s because it’s like a fidget of some kind. 🍻❤️🤺

Really nice video, putting together our favorite technics into a form is super helpfull. Going to record our fiore form soon ;). Not only striking arts do it btw, wrestling styles do it also. Taijiquan for example is full of throws.

At the risk of sounding "cheesy", I really believe that solo training is the "soul" of martial arts! Of course, training with partners is often more valuable, but can you find a good training partner at will? There is something so therapeutic, and just pleasurable about finding flow, options, our own physical foibles, working techniques! Not to mention, the mental strength that we build drilling things with no other motivation than our own desire for growth and improvement!

I made my biggest improvement from solo training actually (but it took a lot of work). I had a year long hiatus from HEMA with only 6 months of experience due to newborn baby, but I had a lot of time to watch high level footage, analyze where and why I get hit from old sparring sessions, video my form, cross train etc. Once I came back from that year long solo-drilling, I noticed a massive skill differential in my sparring sessions. It only works when you have specific goals in mind. I've also applied this to kickboxing/MT as well and it's worked tremendously too.

What I love about solo drilling in particular is that I can create a "form" that I know works for me specifically, and helping me develop some attributes I want/need to develop in order to make techniques work in sparring. Most martial arts classes, be they weapon-based or not, typically have a generalist approach to teaching a group of people. I find the smaller points and nuances of the techniques and movements when I'm drilling/sparring with a partner, or when I am going through the motions by myself. In a way, solo drilling can be some sort of "moving meditation."

Thanks for mentioning the use of forms as a technique library, I think that goes all too often overlooked. But on a large scale, it’s arguably their most important function.

Do we know of some european historical solo drills? I mean, it's hard to imagine that medieval fencers never trained alone and did not have any method of solo training. However I can't think of anything like that described in a fencing manual.

There are a number of German Longsword “Floutishes” - Yiu can learn more about them here: www.keithfarrell.net/blog/2020/04/flourishes-in-the-german-longsword-sources/ Then Marozzo for example is basically an entire book of Katas for every weapon, each of them has an application. There are then the “Regras” for the Iberian montante, and if I remember well, duel wielding swords. There are a number of them, but only a few are strictly Medieval, the other are from the Renaissance.

Wow! That's some outrageously dated Jeff Chan video! It's amazing that the footage is still available! Straight up, anyone looking to improve their hand to hand combat abilities would do well to understand why current Jeff Chan is so much better and work towards a similar outcome (If you get at all close you did well!)
