This is mainly on Escapes and Tributes of the 2000s though I have seen it on other vehicles as well. If you have an ABS Wheel Speed Sensor code then pop your head in there and check to see if it has one of these rings before replacing the sensor. These are a VERY common failure. They're just pressed on to the axle. Rust will build up between them and the axle and cause them to split. This can cause them to float on the axle at a different speed. Sometimes you won't get a code. Sometimes the vehicle will just think a wheel is slipping and activate the ABS on dry pavement.
You can get these rings by themselves. You'd have to clean up the axle really well. I'd recommend putting locktite on them to help them stay. Better yet is the green sleeve retainer compound. When we encounter this in the shop we recommend replacing the whole axle. I've seen these rings be damaged upon installation. I've seen them come back off again after a short time. Plus, what condition is the axle itself in? We recommend going with a whole new product. Yes, it's more money but then you know you'll be good to go!
