Maybe subharmonics? It cuts off but after the “SZ” he makes it sounds like a Bb2? Wouldn’t be surprised if it was chest though, though it sounds pretty bright to be chest. 🤷‍♂️ Edit: listening to the whole note start to end sounds like a little struggle to keep the subharmonics going mid way through like projecting too hard does sometimes.

After listening to it a bunch more times, I’m starting to doubt that he’s using *modal* subharmonics. I just don’t think a subharmonic Bb1 would typically produce the overtones present in the clip. Kargyraa definitely would, though. Still not very likely, as it’s kind of a niche technique that doesn’t get a whole lot of use in mainstream choral music, but anything’s possible. Also, looking at his mouth shape, notice how his lips lock into the /ah/ shape, and how they appear to be quite rigid as though the singer is tensing the muscles in his face and neck/throat. Also, you can clearly see a muscle in the side of his neck raise when he hits the note. All this appears to be consistent with newer users of kargyraa or people who haven’t mastered the technique. I also noticed a subtle Bb2 overlaid on the Bb1, which probably rules out chest completely, and further supports the idea that it’s *some form* of subharmonic.

@@christianmckee3614 I would look into the technique Alexander Mayang uses, the guy who does talk box with oktavists. I remember in one of his comments he says he uses something that is basically Kagryaa but it sounds smoother and is more difficult to achieve.
