*Those were some of MY favorite “hidden gems” from this year! What are YOURS?!* _Boomstick Gaming is the haven for core gamers who value gameplay mechanics and systems, because that's what continues_ _to make anything from 8-bit to 8k, equally enjoyable. Consider sticking around on the channel if you fall into that category! -Alex_

Where exactly is the RPG in Rift Breakers? Dialogue options? Moral choices? Freedom of behaviour? You can't mean stats and XP obviously, they are in every game right now and don't make a game an RPG. You can play an actual RPG with no stats and rules, no dice nor rulebooks - all you need is an open narrative with choices and character freedom.

Because it’s not on pc? Psn or switch store really is not a platform where indie games get promoted a lot. With steam People try a lot of different games and a lot of people buy games based on the user reviews for which less popular games with high user reviews get some attention.

I absolutely loved Narita Boy. It has a few gameplay issues (namely a strange jump that somehow feels floaty and stiff at the same time), but it’s one of the more stylish games I’ve played in recent years. It’s thick with ambiance, and has a surprisingly touching story.

Something about that game made me feel really impatient.. I got an uncomfortable feeling while playing it. Maybe the visuals and possibly the soundtrack. Idk.. It's an odd one. I can't say I've played a game that made me feel like that one did. It's currently on Game Pass.

@@saintallison I never had any game-breaking bugs, the only weird stuff, although probably intentional and possibly just badly designed, was how the map interacted with sidequest markers, not always showing the right path and stuff like that. But other than that the game played like a gem. I'm guessing after more than 4 months after launch the kinks have been subsequently ironed out so I say go for it and give it a spin.

Grime is so damn good. Even at launch with the useless armor, it was a really solid game. I had already beaten it, but I just reinstalled it to check out the patch and it seems like they've made a bunch of improvements. There are loads of weapons that all feel different, excellent gameplay, decent platforming, decent crafting and upgrade systems and a very bizarre but intriguing aesthetic. Probably my new favorite 2D soulslike, except maybe Hollow Knight. It's like 25$, totally worth it.

@@jc.1191 It's not that graphically intensive, I would bet it would run ok. I've only played it on my rtx 3080 so I dunno how it's optimized for older hardware. It's on steam so you can always try it out for an hour and if it runs poorly request a refund - just make sure you keep the total playtime under 2 hours or you will be disqualified from requesting a refund. It's definitely worth a shot. Worst case you're out a little bit of time.

That's crazy. I figured that combat system would've been a wet dream for you. If you didn't do it, go to the old sensei guy in town and let him train your combos after unlocking all the weapons. I didn't see how much potential the combat system had until I did all that training, then it was a whole different thing. Juggling, weapon switching, linking specials. I also thought the movement was spectacular and the game looked phenomenal. I fell in love with it and I typically don't go crazy for Metroidvania. Everybody's got their preferences tho. Lol.

I'll check these out, thanks for the recommendations! I have 2 you may like. There is a side scrolling 2.5D souls-like game called "Song of Iron" that was really fun. Also, though I haven't finished it yet, I've been enjoying "They Always Run". Both games are available on steam for PC.

Crying Suns was free on Epic’s store earlier this year and I totally got sucked into it and finished. I guess it came out on Switch a few months back too. Interesting dark sci-fi story and some pretty tough space ship battles and ship management aspects to it. I enjoyed it more than FTL.

Thanks for these hidden gems, Alex. Videos like this that give a spotlight to smaller, but enjoyable titles are so, sooo important. My hidden gem of the year is Roboquest. It's a colourful roguelite FPS with smooth movement and satisfying gunplay. Still in Early Access, but I can recommend it already.

Check out Blade Assault (still in early access, but amazing) and Skul: The Hero Slayer. Both similar styles of gameplay. They're 2D arcade action roguelites. It seems this style of Roguelite is becoming incredibly popular. It's like Dead cells, but with the action closer to an arcade brawler. PS: Riftbreaker is sick. Have you played their earlier games as well? X-morph defence is very similar to riftbreaker.

Both came from the same SK developer, their most hyped upcoming game is called Lies of P, a souls game where you play as Pinocchio.

@@D00M3R_MAVS sorry, should've said Publisher instead of developer. The future of indie/small developer games is exciting can't wait for Lies of P and Black Myth: Wukong.

This recommendation comes with a bit of a caveat, that you don't actually play the game for about a month. Nykra is a game I backed on Kickstarter like 5 years ago that is finally seeing a full release, however it needs a little more time to fix some issues with the save system in particular. It's a one man project but it's clearly got a lot of dedication behind it.

I like how you went through the games specifics. I've been with switchup (as a viewer then) from their start and I think you'll do evenly well. Edit: saw you have the same sub count roughly haha so yea, made that already. Figures. Good channel.
