The Viking era is the last of the great periods of barbarian attacks. It left Europe transformed, ripe for the rise of the new nations that marked the middle ages. Norsemen, another word for Vikings, conquered a quarter of France, half of England and a third of Italy.

You do have to admit though that the amount of situations they attempt to apply aliens to is impressive. Still the best TV-Show ever aired to watch high. How else are you gonna believe that crap lol. I’ve watched the show since I was a kid and even I knew it was BS. It was entertaining BS nevertheless. A less talked about point IMO is when the show first aired. 2009 when the economy was in the toilet and most of the population felt like they were living through another depression. The show was a fantastical escape from the shitty reality of living real history.

@@ethos5639 , my darling, the name of Kiev Russia is a ''discovery'' of 19 century! Before ''Russia'' has been incorporated into Grand Duch of Lithuania nobody knew about therm of ''Russian''! You must keep in your mind Vladimir never ever christianised ''Russia'! Is a myth of illiterate Russian ''science '' lobby in the historiography of Europe. The origin of the words "Russia" and "Russian" is difficult to reveal and will hardly ever be clarified. Many researchers associate them with the ancient Scandinavian word "ruotsi" - rowers. So they could be called a nation of rowers. If this hypothesis is correct, it is in this way that the Vikings, carving their rivers and seas, called it so. The Slavs became "Russians" when they began to serve the duke. Later, the public became known as the conquerors.

Have to watch Viking Valhalla series. It's got the guy with scars over his eyes on the picture for the series on Netflix. I ironically watched the last kingdom or binged watched the first 3.5 seasons wanted watch something different stumbled on that Valhalla series said why not and it def needs season two. They use Leif Erikson in a way not backed by historical facts but nonetheless it was to me much better then the last kingdom. The last kingdom gets corny you can't lie.

@@actsfive30 from what I understand, all white people are considered caucasian, but not all caucasians are white. I guess this is because the "region of and beyond the Caucasus mountains" is quite a large area. I like to be more particular when referring to my heritage personally, and will check "Other" and then will pencil in "Anglo-Saxon/northwest european", but thats not always possible. I don't think describing myself as just "caucasian" is specific enough, but that's something America does. Idk about other places.

I found this bit of information from a website called Britannica ( A primary source to Historians) that states what I always thought to be true and says, “According to the traditional account presented in The Russian Primary Chronicle, it was founded by the Viking Oleg, ruler of Novgorod from about 879. In 882 he seized Smolensk and Kiev, and the latter city, owing to its strategic location on the Dnieper River, became the capital of Kievan Rus.” Does this information seem false to you? If so, what is your theory or collection of information that proves otherwise because I’d like to hear it.
@s.picone

@Rover How can this be? Some things about this do not add up to me. His name “Oleg” itself derives from the Old Norse Helgi (Helge), meaning "holy", "sacred", or "blessed". The feminine equivalent is Olga. According to History.com, Rus, which is the root of the modern-day Russia, may very well come from an old Nordic word meaning "men who row." Interesting to hear your claims but it’s confusing to me. I really do just want to know the truth. I am not Slavic in origin or from Scandinavia. I am ethnically Sicilian with some Norman roots but I am genuinely curious about Eastern Europe and Viking history. If you have any other credible sources and information you’d care to share that can make sense of what you’re saying, please share. I am more than happy to learn more and I am open to what you are saying. History always has two stories, the victors and the losing side. Historians debate about the past all the time so I am unbiased here.

A glaring omission here has to be the viking invasions of Ireland which established the cities of Dublin, cork, Limerick, among others. The Norse kingdom of Dublin(est 841) was one of the most important viking kingdoms in western Europe and pre-dated York, or Yorvik, as a viking stronghold. Indeed, Ivar the boneless was King of Dublin from 857 to 873 and it was from Dublin that he planned his invasion of England in 860 which ultimately brought about The Danelaw in england and established York, or Yorvik, as the Danelaw capital. Dublin, or Dyflin(as the Norse called it) and York, or Yorvik, were subsequently ruled by the same Irish Norse Uí Ímair(sons of Ivar) dynasty.

For years i was waiting for this to happen and to see Björn become the first swedish king but..nope. In the show they decided to make Björn Ironside a norwegian king. When he was swedens king Arthur! On the origin of the phenomenon of the “Kievan Rus’: “First, in ancient times, the concept of "Kievan Rus" has never been used. The name of the country and the people were simply the word "Rus". As an ethnic self-designation, it was used already in the treaties of Oleg and Igor with the Greeks in 912 and 945. the Byzantines called Rus "Russia" "Russian language" "Russian people" and "the Russian land (Russka Zemlya).” The concept of "Kievan Rus" emerged in the historical science of the middle of the XIX century in the narrow geographical sense: to denote a small podneprovye region - Kyiv region. It was first used by the historian S. M. Soloviev (1820-1879), the author of the famous book "History of Russia from ancient times", which was translated into 29 languages (ed. since 1851). He, in particular, tried to distinguish between "Kyiv Rus", "Rus Chernihiv" and "Russia Rostov or Suzdal". This same understanding is found in N. And. Kostomarov ("Russian history in biographies of its main figures", 1872), V. O. Klyuchevsky ("Full course of Russian history", ed. from 1904), and other historians of the second half of XIX - early XX centuries.” More particular information on the Rus’: “Prior to the Mongol invasions, Rus was composed of East Lithuania, Belarus, Northwest Russia, and East Ukraine if we want to use a modern frame of reference. This was not a single nation, more like a very loose group of people united by a common language and culture. While it gets called the Kievan Rus, Kyiv wasn't really a capital, it was just the best known and most established of the city-states in Rus and throughout many periods of the Rus's history was the dominant city-state, which allowed it to control nearby city-states to a degree. Kievan Rus’ is more of a term for determining a time frame than a nation. During the Mongol invasions, the population of Southern Rus generally shifted to the safer North, to other major cultural centers of Rus such as Novgorod, and eventually to Moscow. Kyiv was burned to the ground by the Mongols more than once while things in Novgorod remained rather stable. Novgorod and Moscow (and Kyiv) all were forced to pay tribute to the Mongols until Moscow rebelled and much later defeated the Golden Horde, becoming an independent state. Meanwhile, Kyiv was a part of Poland-Lithuania. Then after a series of wars, Muscovy conquered and thus reunited the lands that had once been part of Rus, thereby becoming Russia. Since the culture in this area was the same, the lands that Moscovy annexed (such as Kyiv) became simply parts of Russia. There was no cultural boundary and there was definitely no such thing as Ukraine at the time. Kyiv was a Russian city, and people living there in 1700 would have called themselves Russians.” The narration and the premise are the embodiment of propaganda, the involvement of the Norsemen in the Early Medieval history of Europe is vastly overstated, and an obvious resonation of the fact that the only land where they established permanent footholds was the British Isles.

No Vikings ever ruled in Poland. Even Jomsvikings were beaten up by neighbouring Slavs from Stettin and never reached out far from their seaside trade emporium. Slav vikings (viking = pirate) called chąśnicy from Stettin sieged and burned towns in Norway. Świętosława (daugther of Mieszko, wife of Sven Forkbeard) is strictly Slav name so suggestions that she was not a Slav is just a joke. Mentioned Nestor writes in Primary Chronicle, Rurik was an elected king - Slav tribes preferred an arbitrary, usually chosen from the weakest and foreign tribe. The tradition reminding later Poland and Lithuanian Commonwealth king's elections.

Ooooops....lol I just can't stand CLIP ART! Draw a diagram, make a cartoon, but please don't subject potential subscribers to this shitty reenactment footage.

King William, not bad , still lots of contradictions and speculation about what life was about and really like. Someday , we might find out who Jesus Christ really is and is all about.

I would love to know the truth about the origins of the Northern European people and beliefs, you wil NEVER EVER NEVER HEAR THAT. Same old story that is illogical and theory. Few real facts , they use previous videos to build more videos. It’s possible that a real modern, technical and high cultural and deep spiritual nations lived building impossible structures with modern heavy equipment and engineering. FACT - history that these primitive tribal animals lived like pigs and fought over ridiculously trivial and petty issues is a superstition. Sick of it Remake some of those carved statues and gothic cathedrals, they can’t.

@@actsfive30 I don’t know why nobody can understand race is not only how someone looks , it’s also ideological values and prescientific integrity. Like sharpening a pencil or knife , brewing or breeding to execute its objectives and agendas to BENEFIT those values. What we have here is Desrtuction of culture,.. then who benefits and for what ideology? I admit, it’s Too Much for most common people , but not irrelevant.
