Gael Monfils’ dream of a maiden major lives on - just - after he fought back from the brink of defeat to book a duel with Norwegian sixth seed Holger Rune. The Frenchman, who made the semi-finals at Roland-Garros in 2008, collapsed to the court in tears after pulling off the five-set victory in the early moments of Wednesday morning.

It's heartwarming to see a player who, despite being one of the greatest artists of the sport, never managed to get to the top, get such a deserved important win. Even if he loses next round, he still got the triumph his career deserves.

well, I like Monfils but it was a bit strange, between points he looked like he could barely walk then when baez played a drop shop he had no problem running over and getting it. It seems to me that most of you have never played any sport at a professional level. I played football at a fairly high level and during some tough games such cramps could occur. I could barely walk... but when I got the ball? The responsibility, adrenaline and passion just took over and gave me a few meters of sprint. As soon as I passed the ball, the cramps were back. We have a saying: The ball cures everything when it's attached to your foot. I think Gael felt the same way during this game. Both players gave an extraordinary performance and this match will go down in history as one of the best! Well done Gael and Baez, it was a joy to watch!

This man never won a slam, or even a masters. But he will go down in history as one of the greats? Why? Because he has always known and always demonstrated on court that winning on it's own isn't everything. You have to love it, too. I've never seen anyone play with more joy than Monfils. He has always been a joy to watch, has always given the audience what it wants. He never let percentages or stats get in the way of a great match and having fun on court. This match was, imo, less about desperately trying to win fkr winning's sake, but for the people who support him and want him to succeed. He didn't play for himself, he played for his fans whom he clearly loves. And above it all, he showed that sometimes you can win by wanting it so bad and never giving up. If this man never plays again, the tennis world already owes him a huge debt foe the joy and fun he has brought us over the years. Go lightly, king.

To all those people who are justifying the antics "Have you not heard about adrenaline ?" Lol. Calm down. You don't limp after the point to get the crowd to cheer for you more and then run around like it's normal during the point or just when you are about to hit the winner. If it's adrenaline, you won't go up and down in a matter of seconds. After cramping or being passive, if it's adrenaline, you just take off and stay there for a while or until you win/lose. What Monfils did here or does often isn't illegal but is just gamesmanship which is fine and as an opponent you should be able to deal with everything that your opponent throws at you. Kyrgios is an obvious one where he is constantly chatty and makes you lose focus. There's Fognini who is similar to Monfils in terms of antics. And the crowd likes them because it's entertainment of a different kind!

Although big fan of Monfils and very glad he managed to clutch the game, this crowd is easily the worst....making noise when baez was trying to serve on such critical points as well as cheering even before the point was finished is absolutely disgusting...but seriously what can you expect from a crowd that booed Nadal on his fist ever slam there....truly despicable

Медведев уже вылетел с RG после первого круга, поэтому не факт , что Руне не проиграет Монфису. И мы такие офигевшие будем после победы Монфиса в следующем круге RG. Чудеса случаются!

I like Monfils but all the theatrics on the court, it's not fair to his opponent, it's disrespect. Baez, he had crowd against him (Novak knows something about it) but he simply had to win this. But there is something in his game that is missing.
