Wow! Did not expect a band like Failure, let alone a song like Small Crimes by them. That's very rare. It's an awesome song. Their best closer imo. It's not a band that gets a lot of attention, and when they do, it's to their 3rd album that gets praised a bit though

The best part about Failure is that they mix that space rock sound with the best parts about grunge. Their sound can be so dissonant, dark, distorted, but beautiful. Small Crimes always reminds me of Big Long Now by Nirvana or Sludge Factory by AIC.

Yes more Failure! I always took the lyrics to be about an arsonist. There are too many references to fire for it not to mean something. Maybe the protagonist sees starting fires as a "small crime", especially considering he seems to have no qualms about hurting a dog. "Watch in coldest pleasure, tell the world" could be him thinking he's making his mark but setting things ablaze? "They can't convince me now burned prayers, turn me on to nowhere sick and empty I don't feel so bad". Maybe he was having second thoughts but is now steadfast in his conviction. Maybe he was trying to square his habbit with God? "Freedom's not so great all fears, burn up" could mean he dosen't care if he gets caught anymore, he just wants to burn his problems away. It definitely paints the picture of a damaged individual, with the music itself really feeding into the paranoid sounding mind of the protagonist. Great track and great breakdown!

Yeah I've thought the same. It took me a while to get that but this is probably my favorite Failure song, this or Mange.

Yeah, I loved this hard grunge sound. It reminded me a lot of Kerbdog, so I'll have to dive into Failure.. If you enjoy this band/ song, see what you think of 'Sorry for the Record', by Kerbdog (although it's the last song on that album and it the slowest track). The song ends introducing the first track again, so you start at the end and go full cycle, so give the whole album a go it you have time!

Failure hasn't let me down yet so I highly recommend them if you liked this. I've heard of Kerbdog but don't think I've heard any of their work -- but if it's like this then I'll have to check it out.

This whole record is about drug abuse and mental illness and I always interpreted that fade out to fade in as the return from an overdose (however you want to interpret that)

Surprised I've never heard of this band. This is very 90s alt rock sounding in terms of production, but the music itself doesn't remind me of anything specific from the era. It does have the "lazy" vocals, dark tonality, clean guitars into heavy fuzz elements that was common in the era, but they go in completely different directions harmonically that provide such a unique and interesting aesthetic. It's weird saying on the one thing that it has so many elements in common with an era/genre but at the same time doesn't really sound like anything else in the era/genre! In any case, I really enjoyed this. Will definitely have to make these guys a priority.

failure is kind of similar to a band like neurosis, in that they influenced a lot of other bands of that era but are themselves not well known. A band where you can hear that influence clearly for example is a perfect circle.

I know it’s on the nose but I feel like this should have been theme music for that Netflix show Small Crimes. I can see how some viewers may not be into this, as the first two failure albums were much more repetitive than later albums, but Magnified is a beast of a record regardless.

Also Greg Edwards was really into fretless bass on this record, which it seems he utilized here, giving it that distinct tone you were having trouble nailing down. Could be wrong, but it feels right.

didn't expect to be the first, just clicked on the first video of yours i saw, i forget if you take requests from the comments, and i ain't been around in a while, but i was thinking, you may find Job For a Cowboy Sun Of Nihility interesting, i feel like there'd be stuff there for you to dissect. well either way, if you consider it thanks, i also wonder your opinion on Septic Flesh, symphonic death metal, i really like 'em, orchestra + death metal. love that shit. forget if you've ever covered one of their songs before.

It's a cool track. I have heard a few Failure tracks but they tended to be a bit faster than this one.

You Must check out "Fantastic Planet"(from 1996), as its pure brilliance in every way! Start with the intro into the first 3 songs, but then do "Dirty Blue Balloons". Failure is a band to explore, and all the albums from Fantastic Planet on are Incredible. They broke up in the late 90's, and wonderfully returned in 2014, with "The Heart Is a Monster". Since that 2014 album, they've released 2 more fantastic albums, there's plenty of great songs to choose from. Enjoy. P.S. "Small Crimes" is Not the place to start with this band.
