This video is likely my favorite of the composition in photography series that we've done so far. It was both difficult and interesting to research and I'm excited to share a timeline of photography history with you as far as abstraction goes.
Watch and enjoy!
Photographers discussed in this video:
Antoine-Henri Becquerel
Pierre Dubreuil
Alvin Coburn
Man Ray
William Garnett
Herbert List
Jaroslav Rössler
Moholy Nagy
Anton Bragaglia
Erwin Blumenfeld
Naoya Hatakeyama

Love the new style you've been adding to your latest episodes. I really like this one, it makes you think about photographic (art) movements. An episode on that (maybe a series?) would be excellent. Keep up the great work! Thank you for the show!

Absolutely great style of videomaking. Your videos cover all those exact points which the viewers are trying to learn. And therefore they are seeing your video. Very clear and nice explanation with examples of images of other photographers. Thank you.

Been watching your videos for a while. Just now at 12:08AM, June 30th, 2019 it dawned on me. You look like Paul Giamatti! Maybe his long lost brother.

It seems to me the abstraction in these examples lies on the subjects rather than the photographs themselves in the sense that these subjects didn't really have to be photographed to be abstract; they're inherently pretty abstract already. In my opinion, better examples of abstraction in photography would be the works of photographers such as William Klein, Daido Moriyama and Zdzislaw Beksinski(yes, the painter). The works these photographers made are very photographic through and through(they won't exist without photography). Their works contain the representational nature of photography(their subjects are real people and real objects). But at the same time, they're also very bizarre and ambiguous yet remains very photographic despite all that since they simply won't exist without a camera(and a darkroom).

I think a photo being "abstract" is heavily dependent upon the audiences opinion. Most of the examples given are of rather abstract techniques rather then abstract composition. Not to say that there isn't an element of abstraction in the composition. However, the reason these examples stand out is because the technique used to capture the image is abstract. Which might actually be the meaning behind abstract art. Abstract paintings are created in rather non-traditional techniques...humm?

I'm starting think that by commenting on how I disagree with your assrsment of abstract photography I have realized that e might be on the same page.

In my opinion, a lot of words to say that abstract is non-representational.

i love your channel but sometimes i get bored with all the talk about photography that can go on for minutes without hardly any imagery... i guess im inpatient but we're in visual industry and what you do here i wish i would see more / where you show an image and can keep talking but the viewer is looking at something besides you. it might make a stronger connection to the subject you're elaborating on....
