with Isolated Vocal tracks of You Shook Me All Night Long! Learn how it's done!
AC/DC - Brian Johnson - You Shook Me All Night Long - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Singing Lesson
Angus and Malcom Young’s guitar work in “You Shook Me All Night Long” has made numerous lists of the top guitar solos in rock.
What other songs do you think belong at the top of the list for the greatest rock guitar solos? Let me know in the comments!
We’re going to be looking at Brian Johnson’s isolated vocals from the tune and we’ll explore the compressed, laryngeal position that he sings in.
I’ll explain how he splits between a little head voice and some mixed voice and then I’ll show you how we can manipulate the larynx to achieve the sound.
Here are the AC/DC tunes I've done:
• How To Sing AC/DC- Bri...
• AC/DC - It's A Long Wa...
And here are the tunes from some of our KTVA students:
• AC DC - You Shook Me A...
• AC-DC - Back In Black ...

Thing is 99,9% singers trying to imitate Brian sound like a mix of mickey mouse meets Kermit the frog...and Brian sounds absolutely amazing. That's why he is who he is, he is unique singer. There is only one guy who can imitate him and sound badass and that is Ivan Gac. I do however like your versions of ac dc stuff

As far as the perceived “heaviness” of the vocals are concerned, the exact same thing happens with guitars. A lot of guys think that Angus uses WAY more gain/distortion than he actually does. So they try to dial in an “AC/DC tone” and just can’t get it right. There’s a lot less distortion in that signal than most people would estimate. Don’t forget that Malcolm’s guitar and amp is a huge part of that equation as well. The converse is true for bass. A lot of “clean” recorded bass tones actually have appreciable distortion or overdrive on them. The dirt disappears in the mix, but it helps bring the bass out overall. Thanks Ken!

A little of topic about his singing, but the band couldn’t pick a perfect singer for the job. I’ve seen him in interviews both being interviewed and him being the interviewer, and he comes across as the most down to earth, sweetest guy you’d ever meet in your life. If there was any one I would love to meet it would be Brian. I’d love to have a pint with the man!

It's weird to me how Mutt keeps AC/DC so raw and minimally produced wheras Leppard became so over produced, in my opinion. With the first few Def albums it's easy to believe it was the same producer but later not much. I wish Mutt kept them sounding closer to AC/DC production

It saddens me that they didn’t continue using Mutt as a producer for the rest of their albums after For Those About to Rock. Not saying the others were bad, but there was something special with him compared to others. George Young (RIP) and Harry Vanda were also great.

I’ve been playing music for 25 years by ear. I play guitar, piano, drums, bass, fiddle, harmonica, cello, esc esc. All self thought. Can’t read music. Not a lick of it. I can’t sing all though ive tried for years. I’m not convinced one can be taught to sing. A truly good singer is natural. Like my niece. She’s 20, never had a vocal lesson in her life and sing like a angel. Her not having a lesson ever makes me feel like I’ll never be able to be taught.

Hey Ken have you ever encountered stories about singers getting sick after singing? I know it sounds weird, but I've been reading anecdotal stories about it happening. I'm not talking about laryngitis, I'm talking about the voice being generally fine after the singing, but then getting a head cold. I was looking into it after getting a cold after one of my shows. At first I thought I was over singing, but now one of my band mates is also sick so it probably isn't related, especially since my voice feels fine. I just thought that was an interesting thing. While reading online I came across many posts about it happening to certain people often.

Funny story. I was about 11 when back in black came out, and me and a friend waited in line at our local bookstore to get it. I remember unwrapping it, and putting it on the turntable for the first time. The talk back then, after Scott died, that AC/DC was down. We were blown away listening to Johnson. I came from an evangelical home, and being young and innocent, had no clue how overtly sexual their music was.

Ya gots a good thing goin' here Ken. The first time he says "we" he sounds like he's struggling. When he nails it the second time around it feels like a win to me/him. Satisfying all around. Possible it was designed into the song? Ya never know. This IS a Mutt Lange recording.

I think that melody is in the 4 octave. G A and B and occasionally getting up to that D and E5. It's pretty simple. Key of G. But what a hammering his voice is taking on this. I can really hear the strain. I can imagine his face turning red and the whole nine lol. So it makes me think of sacrifice for music. I remember in an interview him talking about how he sang as high and as hard as he could. There's a lot of heart in this performance. Sort of an everyman's ode. One of the first covers I ever learned on guitar. It's a lot easier to play on guitar than to sing haha. This is a great song to learn how to sing properly. Then bust it out in karaoke and make everyone think you're a genius! At least that's what I wish I could do. 🌴

very interesting video, i'm learning this myself haha so yeah, would you be able to react to Lordi by the way? the singer got a rather unique voice that you don't hear that often so it'd be pretty sick if you made a reaction and analysis on LORDI ;)

Hi Ken, apparently Bon Scott told his fellow band members, after hearing Johnson during a tour, that he’d be a great vocalist for AC/DC if ever they needed to replace him. And are you planning on doing Metal Church who did it better?

My only comment beyond yayy, is what would BIB have sounded loke with Bon doing the vox? Lazier? Bon's the man, as a writer and for delivering the fire. No doubt Brian does great. There's only 1 Gone Shootin' or Girls Got Rhythm though.
