Foldforming Introduction: A Rolled Leaf and a Star Base Form

Foldforming is a technique of metalworking whereby metal is folded, repeatedly forged and annealed, and unfolded; at which stage it generally has a dramatic new three-dimensional form.
The technique was invented in the late 1980s by Charles Lewton-Brain. Charles' work has been recognized by the British Museum Research Lab, by a 1991 Rolex award, and in 2012 he was the recipient of the Governor General Award for his contribution to Canadian arts.
Charles Lewton-Brain is Associate Professor, Jewellery in the School of Craft + Emerging Media at the Alberta College of Art + Design.

Absolutely gorgeous work & helpful explanations! I'm a work-at-home jewelry artist with experience in wire work (& gemstones), but have been interested in more advanced metal art for years (limited by lack of torch & safer workspace). Your instructions are spot on, even down to the hammer (& WHY). Also love the fact that you mentioned your forging technique in reference to the anvil & tool vs the motion of the copper. Perfect example of physics at work in design. I would've been grateful to have had you as an art/design professor (many moons ago, ha). Looking forward to more tutorials. ❤️Thank you!
