Ncs and unc are the major players in the ACC. There is a power block there and with WF and Duke and will stand together. Miami and Clemson can leave if they want. ACC is primarily a basketball league but what they don’t get is the SEC are quickly rivaling the ACC because of money. The SEC basketball teams will over take them very soon. The ACC is being mismanaged and is not promoting their schools best interests

Yes and the mismanagement and complete absence of the ACC promoting the interest of their members schools has been in effect from the first gosh forsaken day FSU joined.

The ACC has never been a football-first conference and surely the "mismanagement" you perceive is merely the priority the conference has always placed on basketball and other sports. There is no mismanagement, but there definitely is a mismatch of priorities vis-a-vis FSU. I do not see that changing.

UCLA, like Cal (or UC-Berkeley as it’s officially known), are both state schools. The Big Ten simply didn’t want Stanford nor Cal, even though they’re both two top universities. Cal’s the number 1 public university in the world.

A Local View: NC State has won 6 of the last 8 football games against UNC and was the swing vote that changed that allowed the addition of the recent three additional schools, based entirely on the financials. The fans bases hate each other (more than Duke vs UNC). So I would discount any collusion between these two schools in terms of realignment. As you indicated, both schools and the ACC itself are NC based have serious history with considerable energy. And I am sure there is an interlocking collection of Big Four alumni on various boards (as well as many fans) who want to see the ACC continue in its new form (Hello Stanford, Cal and SMU). If/when FSU which has been a distraction and never a core ACC institution, leaves the ACC, would that make UNC an ACC Kingpin and so be to their advantage? Clemson and Miami have worked well in the ACC and may chose to transition out which would not create problems for the ACC. But yeah, due to politics UNC is probably not going anywhere.
@EyeOfTheWatcher
@EyeOfTheWatcher 5 ай бұрын
Remember that NC State flip their vote when bringing in Stanford, Cal, and SMU and Wake Forest original vote was in favor of the new comers too. UNC voted against bring in the the new comers. North Carolina politics can be complex and there are deals that can be made to make sure the approval goes through even it means UNC going to another conference. Remember when the legislature was going to step in with the whole ECU and NCSU deal(where NCSU was going to stop playing ECU in football), but did not because a deal was made between the schools behind the scenes. I think UNC would prefer to stay in the ACC because the North Carolina schools will have more power if FSU leaves, but at the same time they don't want to be stuck in the ACC if the money is not right.

Given the manner in which VaTech joined the ACC and their performance therein, it would surprise me if they would choose to leave, if that were even possible. It is not clear what the football landscape will look like going forward, and I do not believe that ACC schools are well situated to field top football teams consistently, given the costs, priorities and complexities. Factors such as stadium sizes and fan support suggest a more middle-tier for ACC football programs overall. The conference could certainly product one or two strong teams each year which could compete with schools which are more football-centric.

Your point about the hate coming from the Raleigh side does reflect my information. The State people seem to be behind all negative allegations concerning the UNC programs. NCSU has more students than UNC-Chapel Hill. The Univesity of North Carolina System includes all of the state-funded colleges/universities in the State. The UNC System Board has the authority to make decisions about schools moving to another conference. Only about 1% of all colleges and universities in the USA break even on sports, and the ones that do often charge a high athletic fee for their students. On the average, students pay about😊 $1000 per semester, but students are not the ones you see in the football stands.

A lot of people confuse the UNCCH and NCSU fanbases and all their vitriol with the two school's as academic institutions. They are actually very friendly and cooperative. They work together in research projects, have graduate programs that involve classes taken at both schools and work done interchangeably, and generally are good neighbors. They are really two parts of the 16 university. As to the Board of Governors, they are political in that they are appointed based on political and business connections, in this case, overwhelmingly Republican as the GOP controlled legislative branch a few years ago stripped the Governor of the power to appoint any of the membership. Expect the BOG to be beholding to those who got them there and expect those decisions to be not so much to benefit NCSU specifically but more to protect the business interests of the state, and that may or may not benefit NCSU. What I do think they would object to would be for a member school, in this case UNCCH, deciding to leave the ACC buy borrowing a great deal of money to do so. I can't see them viewing this as fiscally wise.

I don't think so, as long as they permanent playing each other that would satisfied the alumni bases and they can do that via out of conference games. Would they push to have both schools go to the same conference yes, but I don't think it is a deal breaker if certain things are done to lock the schools to always playing each other and left behind schools are not seeing a major decrees in revenue. The UNC System board is more regional based with the board members, as of right now, and that works in UNC favor.

Didn't the Texas legislature try to stop Texas A&M from going to the SEC, and the Oklahoma legislature push bundling Oklahoma and Oklahoma State as a package deal if they left the Big12? These efforts didn't succeed, and I wonder if the same efforts with UNC and NC State will succeed where Texas and Oklahoma failed. The SEC has gotten rid of divisions which eliminates restrictions on keeping the divisions balanced by the number of teams in each, and it eliminates a limit on the number of teams added. This gives the SEC the edge in picking up these teams, with the primary limit on the number of teams added being financial - does adding a North Carolina or FSU add more revenue than it takes away as television money is divvied up? Other than increasing the costs of traveling to play in more distant venues, why wouldn't and SEC - Big 10 unofficial merger now work well for both conferences?

UNC and UVA are both handcuffed to their instate counterpart (State and VT respectively). Clemson and FSU don’t have this issue. This is why I predict UNC and NC State, along with UVA and VT, both go to the SEC as package deals with Clemson and FSU being the first big moves to the B16, the aftermath of which is Stanford, ND, GT, and Miami going to the B16 as well, with the SEC picking up a handful of other teams to expand to 24 (looking at Okie State, Kansas, K State, and maybe SMU). I still think Boo got State an invite to the SEC with putting Bama in over FSU.

Truth be known UNC-CH would really rather stay where they are. The Board of Governors don't want an individual school within the system to make a "deal with the devil" borrowing from a venture capital group to buy their way out of the ACC. It's all about the financials. If it's $200 million to exit the ACC that's not a debt that the BOG would like to see a school take on and they would veto that plan. Also bare in mind that a healthy ACC brings a lot of financial benefit to the the state of NC and it is in our state's best interest that it remain strong. This might well stop the exit at either FSU alone or FSU and Clemson in which case the ACC will be fine. I don't think Miami is as attractive as some do and wonder if their trustees view a huge buyout from the ACC GOR as a wise move.

It was heavily rumored that the SEC offered Oklahoma to be paired with Texas A&M before Missouri eventually got the SEC invite. The Sooners demanded Okie Lite be also invited into the SEC. The SEC then turned to Missouri. You see no Oklahoma State now accompanying Oklahoma into the SEC. People use to say those two would not separate. North Carolina is no Oklahoma in football. I just do not see the SEC taking two North Carolina schools. The SEC seems happy at 16. I think the B1G would have to do a lot to change that. Does the B!G want go way above 20 members in the deep south? I think answering that might yield a lot to what the SEC does farther north in the ACC. I don't think the B1G wants 22 or 24 members.
@PaulH581

I think the State of North Carolina market is valuable enough for both of the big two conferences to want to be in but I would hesitate to guess what that would mean for the North Carolina fan. I don’t think as a UNC fan that UNC has a good chance to leave without NC State to also have a “suitable” landing spot. That doesn’t necessarily mean the two schools would go to the same conference in my opinion. I could see a scenario where say the B1G would invite UNC (to beat out the SEC) and the SEC would invite NC State to secure a presence in the State of North Carolina. I think the SEC would like UVA as well so that could help a team like NC State. But if a scenario arises where UNC gets an offer to either the B1G or SEC and there is no news about a landing spot for NC State you can bet your last dollar there will be a lot of highly paid cry babies we also call politicians that will at least waste a lot of time fighting UNC’s exit. Those politicians might not succeed but they will waste a lot of time and money which they are experts at doing already. And all of this assumes that there is a way to escape the ACC GOR contract which is about as easy as finding a home without an HOA in the triangle. Good luck to any school exploring their exit options from the ACC. This conference realignment talk is starting to feel a lot like a soap opera to me. Stay tuned for the next episode of “As the ACC Turns.”

UNC and NC State should have fled to the SEC years ago when the bathroom debacle flared up. SEC could have rounded out the conference footprint while taking two basketball schools from Tobacco Road. The NFL has NC States QBs in the league. It would have been a similar move that A&M and later Texas did, leaving the original SW Conference. Four teams in Texas, with A&M and Texas being dominant. SEC instead went west, adding Mizzou and A&M. NC is more ‘southeastern’ than Texas. I believe the SEC was actually considering his, prior to going west.

People needs to stop reading the headlines and look at the details from local media. Any public university in North Carolina has to get approval to switch conference, this is nothing new. When North Carolina A&T University moved from the MEAC to Big South and then again moving from the Big South to CAA they had to get approval both times. In their presentations to the board they noted the financials behind the move. The only thing that this new rule is doing is making the financial piece mandatory and having to offer greater detail on the financial behind the move and adding a longer notification time of a move. If anything this is more than likely a move by UNC to prevent the state legislature from getting involved and thus giving them cover to move by them selecting the criteria behind the scenes for a possible move by making certain things mandatory. I predict that if UNC wants moves to the SEC, then they will present the following to the board: the financials showing that the school will earn more profit being in the SEC along with making sure that NC State and Duke are permanent out of conference opponents. The reality is Wake Forest is expendable because they are no longer located in Wake Forest and are further away in Winston Salem, NC. They could easily throw in an WF a bone by only guarantee that they will play them on regular reoccurring period, could be every two years or something like depending on how many out of conference games they have to use. The SEC is building the footprint of the old southern conference and thus adding North Carolina and Virginia would make that happen.

For those making statements that the Board of Governors is majority NCSU affiliated members, I looked it up. Not true at all. Here are the number. Of the 24 members here is the breakdown. Members were counted if they either graduated from or in some way otherwise affiliated with a particular school. There is overlap as in some might have gotten their undergrad degree from NCSU and a law degree from UNCCH. Some members never attended are are otherwise connected to a particular school and were obviously appointed based on their business connections. NCSU - 8 UNCCH - 9 UNCW - 2 WCU - 2 ASU - 2 NCCU - 1 NCAT - 1 UNCP - 1 No one with a direct connection with the largest enrollment school ECU, or FSU, WSSU, ESSU, UNCG, UNCC, WSSU of the School of the Arts.

UNC is a big brand no doubt. But it’s all basketball which pales in comparison to football. If you look at viewership numbers for football, UNC and NC State are pretty even if not NC State having a slight edge. Not saying UNC isn’t a big brand. But with football viewer numbers, they’re no better than average

It sucks to be a Tar Hole. Sadly, in NC there is a lot of home cooking. North Carolina businesses have a lot of control over the ACC and that has developed into an impediment for the ACC long term growth. Why does anyine think UNC is such an attractive football brand? The Tarheels last football conference championship was 1980. The only ACC program with a longer drought in attaining a football conference championship is N.C. State. There has never been a Tarheel recipient of a Heisman Trophy. There has never been a UNC National Championship in football. There is only one Tarheel enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

It feels like the ACC is going to drag this legal battle out with FSU, for as long as they can. I’m not sure where ESPN stands with all this now. On one hand it seems they’re more in line with the ACC, but on the other hand they have to be concerned about FSU and the other top ACC schools moving to the Big Ten. I’m afraid none of this is going to get resolved as quickly as we had all hoped.

I think you are missing the obvious. For several years Roy Williams tormented the Republicans in the North Carolina general assembly. He did this because he believed the conservative politics they were perusing cost him his first round games in Greensboro and he got involved in North Carolina politics. Now it’s payback time. This is the Republican Party making UNC athletics pay for what they did.

That board that now has to approve a move to another conference is majority NC State grads. This is all about making sure NC State goes with UNC, when they move. This is a huge advantage for the SEC, because at this point there is NO WAY that the BIG TEN is taking both UNC/NC State. A lot of politics at play going on here and the SEC has had serious back channel talks going on with UNC. They want them badly and NC State knows that. Even people in key positions at UNC have been moved in the last months. Guys that were pro BIG TEN guys have been replaced with pro SEC guys. From the Chancellor to a board member. The writing is kind of on the wall with what's going on. This was a huge power move, to get NC State into one of the power 2 conferences.

yeah, there are a lot of things going on there in North Carolina and this was genius by NC State. Lets not forget that North Carolina was one of the schools with FSU and Clemson (I think both end up in the BIG TEN) that voted no on expansion. Changes in leadership and who knows what kind of deals are taking place by third parties involved. The UNC Board and Chancellor are now all pro SEC. Certainly the academic culture and staff fit the BIG TEN, this is not expansion from ten years ago anymore. The ACC is the last great gold rush for the powers that are the BIG TEN and SEC. They could do what they want. The two could even break away if they wanted after the next round of expansion and my guess is the BIG would love to start a new league with the SEC. Kind of like a pro style model with how the NFL is. That would force the hand of Notre Dame to join. I don't think it goes that far right now. But there is something to thank about here. ESPN can opt out in 2027 of the ACC media deal. Instead of paying for schools they don't care about, they could send four to the SEC and just pay for those 4 schools. I think there could be a battle for Miami, as funny as that sounds if it happens. The question would be, would ESPN want UNC/NCState(forced to take because of this) Virginia, and Miami? We know FOX has said they would like Miami in the BIG TEN. Stay tuned!@@CFBAddiction

The SEC ,the Big Ten ,and the tv networks are to blame for this mess not the ACC. They have already wrecked the Big 12 and the PAC 12. College sports were much better without these mega conferences. 8 to 10 schools should be big enough. You should play every conference member home and home in basketball and every conference member in football. I know that’s old fashioned but I am old enough to remember when it was set up that way and it was a better situation.

For real? UNC is #46 in viewership. No conference is going looking for the 46th ranked team. And when you look at revenue generated, they would be last or next to last in the B1G and lose the conference tens of millions of dollars a year. The B1G is not bringing in anyone who would be a liability.

UNC is NOT a more valuable brand in football than NC State. If you actually look at the television ratings for football in recent years, NC State has higher ratings for their games than unc. Based on record in conference games, NC State is the 3rd best football program in the ACC over the last 4-5 years. Also, NC State has a MUCH better football culture, and home attendance and ticket sales at their home football games than unc. Unc is a basketball school and has a super-lame football culture and home attendance, as even their own fans will admit. It's similar to Kentucky in the SEC -- a basketball school with a "big brand" (due to basketball) with a a bad football culture...only Kentucky actually has a better football culture and attendance than unc. Now, if we are talking about men's basketball (or women's soccer and field hockey), then yes unc has a "more valuable brand" than NC State in men's basketball.

Did anyone really expect Boo Corrigan to idly sit back and watch his school get snubbed? I'm sure Boo is familiar with the saying, "If God wasn't a Tarheel why did He make the sky Carolina blue?" Boo had to get out of his chair and fight to keep NC State alive. UNC is one of the best known international brands; in the mix with Coke, Nike and the like. This move definitely hurts UNC. Their decision clearly shows that the powers at hand know that NCSU has no chance on their own and are being used as nothing more than an anchor to hold down the Tarheels. This should add some heat to their rivalry.

Problem with ACC is everyone thinks they are SEC/B10 worthy. The POWER 2 will take them on in their own spare time. Why should they hurry? With 16/18 teams already…greed will set in and beggars won’t be choosing! The natural selections are NC/ ND going to the B10….and FSU/Clemson going to the SEC….but they have 3 problems. 1. ND doesn’t want to go to anyone….and could remain Independent….but that depends on the Playoff formula (tbd). 2. SEC doesn’t like FSU.…problematic….but likes NC and Va. (strategic fits in new states) 3. SEC already has schools in SC and Fla…which makes conflicts possible with existing members. That leaves all the others fending for themselves….keeping their existing structure and adding teams as others leave although with same money …or splitting up individually , seeking a Partner on their own ( Big East, B12, or AAC) ……… or merging with the best conference standing…the B12! If their egos and hubris would get real…..the best move ( if Clemson , FSU, and NC and Va.are considering leaving and have offers) Is to use their recent acquisitions to merge with the Big 12 and to create a 30 team conference in 3 divisions…keeping the Sanctity of the P12, B12, AAC intact thru 10 -12 team divisions….giving more power to negotiate with TV, gain nationwide 24/7 coverage…while regional divisions will help all other sports to compete economically and locally….and be the best Basketball conference in the Universe! Call it the United Conference…with 3 Coast to Coast Divisions The ACC East….11 Boston College, Syracuse, Pittsburg, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State , Georgia Tech, Miami, UCF, Duke, Wake The United Central….11 Louisville, Cinncinati, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas St. Okla St., TCU, Baylor, Houston, SMU, Tex Tech The Pacific West…..9 California, Stanford, Utah, BYU, Wash St,. Oregon St. Colorado, Arizona, Ariz St. , Maybe add San Diego St, and Boise State…or UNLV /Fresno State. This gets natural competitors and matches for football and all other sports! Why not?? If ACC can only look long term and understand they need help to negotiate with TV. Dissolving and merging negates contracts in existence and will force them to the negotiating table when the B12 contract comes due! Keeps the remaining P12 and ACC remaining members in a Power 3 conference competing against the Power 2 and ESPN ! And as a bonus…..the basketball conference can negotiate hard to possible add a Gonzaga, UConn , Villanova to drive the greatest BB conference on earth….which fills a lot of nationwide TV spots , controls many bowls, and can develop their own conference tourneys to easily gain access to the Playoffs and March Madness. Got to have a plan …before you get planned by someone else!
