ACC | Why Open Lobbies Get a Bad Reputation! GT3 @ Zolder // Assetto Corsa Competizione

Assetto Corsa Competizione has been the subject of a lot of debate in the sim racing world over the past week, following Dave Cam’s KZfaq rant on it. He’s since calmed down after a better race at Imola, but I thought I should give ACC another try too.
Of all the sims I own, ACC is my least favourite. I’m certainly not saying I think it’s bad. Far from it - it looks spectacular, and sounds spectacular. I just find it a bit boring. Maybe it’s the lack of variety caused by it being such a specialist GT3 / GT4 sim. But the times I’ve raced it, I’ve found myself getting a bit bored. I just don’t feel the same connection with the track and car that I do in RaceRoom, Assetto Corsa or even iRacing.
Today, we’re entering an open lobby ACC multiplayer race. I know, I know - hardly the best environment to give Assetto Corsa Competizione another chance! These open multiplayer lobbies have a really bad reputation - and sadly, the actions of a couple of drivers here will show us exactly why that bad rep exists.
Other than that, though, it was a decent enough race. Check,it out and let me know what you think - both of the race itself, and ACC in general. Thanks for watching!

This commentary is amazing. A joy to watch. Subbing for more. Races in ACC pubs are about, evasion, and reading other drivers. I would argue its more important then pace, if your not an alien. I like this because I'm not the fastest but I'm great with car control, so I just keep it on the track and still manage to get podiums.

Hey, welcome, and thank you! Yes you’re absolutely right. I’ve already found with ACC that you’ll get punished for ‘overdriving’ the car. In iRacing and RaceRoom I’ve got used to throwing the car around and being a bit more aggressive, but completely the opposite seems to be required here. Keeping it smooth and steady is definitely the way forward. Now I’ve just got to learn to stop whacking those inside kerbs! Thanks for the sub 😃

Good to hear from you JD! I know a lot of people don’t understand the appeal of open lobbies when you can choose cleaner and more respectful community racing, but for me I do enjoy the challenge of the unknown - not knowing the drivers around you, having to assess and interpret what types of driver they are, and how to deal with them. It keeps me on my toes! Sure, when it all goes wrong I’ll be the first to have a grumble 😂 But generally, I like to test myself in these types of race 👍

Yeah, I appreciate I’m not doing it any favours by judging it on its standard of open lobby racing! But for me, it’s always a sim I’ll fire up occasionally when I fancy a change, rather than one I’m prepared to commit any real time to. This race was ok, mainly because, for once, all of the crazy wrecking on those opening laps didn’t end up wiping me out too!

Fantastic stuff Chris! As a fellow sim racer I really enjoy your videos - the presentation and commentary are top notch, they must take ages to prepare but I for one really appreciate the effort you put in. The immersion of ACC got me hooked on PC sim racing a few years ago so I love it for that, but I agree that the cars don't quite feel connected to the road somehow. Instead I invest most of my time on RaceRoom and love watching your races from the ranked servers there. Finally, I've been really impressed with how you've improved your driving over the last year or so. Stamping out mistakes, improving consistency all while getting faster - respect! I've joined SCB but you guys don't race on the nights I'm able to hit the rig sadly - maybe one day we'll meet on a virtual race circut somewhere 😁

Ahh thank you Jason, very kind of you to say. ACC is definitely a very good sim, and I’m sure if I had the time to invest in playing with setups, I could get the car feeling more to my liking. But with time very much against me, I find RaceRoom and iRacing to be a bit easier for ‘hopping in’ as and when I can. Great to hear you joined SCB, you’ll have to let me know what your racing nights are… I’m sure we can arrange something, even if it’s just a ranked raid on one of the RaceRoom servers.

I gave up on the public lobbies on ACC a while back after someone was parked towards the end of Kemmel Straight at Spa, waiting for a victim, to then drive out and T-bone me off the track and end my race. The LFM setup for ACC looks better and acts as an idiot filter, although I admit I haven't joined yet. I prefer just racing the AI in ACC these days! Another entertaining video though, Chris. Top marks!

Yeah LFM looks great, and I did sign up ages ago - I ended up doing one GT4 rookie race, which was decent. Trouble is, the race start times don’t always suit me for when I’m free to drive. Your complaints about ACC are similar to Dave Cameron's. I like it but have struggled massively to get my safety rating up because I've only ever driven in these lobbies. I'm still on an SA of 66. I rarely crash into others but others have a habit of crashing into me.
@chrisrogerssimracing
@chrisrogerssimracing 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I saw Dave Cam’s video and actually that’s what inspired me to fire it up and give it another try. It’s certainly not that I dislike it - it looks and sounds brilliant. But I just don’t think it’s suited to my needs. I’m very much a ‘hop in and race’ sim racer. I don’t really have the time (or interest) in lengthy setup testing or long practice stints. And I get the impression that, to get full enjoyment out of ACC, you need to really put the time in. It’s a good sim, but suspect it will continue to be the one I fire up once every couple of months when I fancy a change.

Gamer Muscle did a great video some time ago about how to improve your SA in ACC (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5p9qsWqutC1nWg.html). Basically, you race against AI, but set them at 90% or whatever you feel comfortable with. Generally, any mistakes will be yours and not by the competition; your SA will improve, then maybe you can jump back into the online lobbies with higher SA requirements (and fewer idiots hopefully).
@daviddavies3637
@daviddavies3637 2 жыл бұрын
@@bustab8649 I've tried that but that in itself takes absolutely ages. The reason you set it at 90% is so that you can overtake cars, but ideally not too quickly. I've noticed that ACC doesn't take into account how many cars you overtake on a lap. So, Ideally, you need to overtake one car per lap. But then you seem to lose SA three times faster than you gain it every time you so much as scratch the paintwork. It's a monstrosity of a system.
@bustab8649
@bustab8649 2 жыл бұрын
@@daviddavies3637 I get that, for sure. You can also increase SA by driving in close proximity to the AI cars, but it is tedious (I did it via the Career mode)! It is frustrating that you have to work at getting a SA increase, but the SA can fall very quickly after being hit a few times - mine fell by 10 points in three public lobby races, all of which were as a result of other divers smashing into the back of me on the opening laps. However, I have since found JL Motorsports online, who run public servers 24/7 (search for 'JL M'). You can races most circuits in packed grids. They do have minimum SA requirements of 50, 75 and 90 (or thereabouts), depending on the race; you should be able to get racing without too much difficulty. They race to a high standard in my experience, which is fun and without many incidents in each race.
