This battle is very interesting. Why? When you are sitting in 525i, you feel that car is much slower than 525d. Both are fitted 3 liter R6 engine, but torque in 525d steal the whole show. But the result?!

Torque is a tricky thing. It makes you feel quick but actually not. Its good in climbing a hill its powerfull but in hard acceleratiom rpm and hp is more important

Well let's face it. The diesel floged the petrol 0 to 100 in a drag. Most roads are limited to 100km/h so you'd be better off with the diesel being able to get similar power for alot less fuel consumption

@@mitchmckeiver1429 Well im driving a Diesel and youre right the consumption is very good for the Power you get. Since i live in Germany and we can drive faster than 100 and im Most of the time on the Autobahn the extra acceleration would be nice 🤣

@@gamingti7391 but then again at the same speed a diesel will burn less fuel, and when cruising on autobahn its better to have an engine with plenty of torque to avoid being full throttle 24/7 as soon as you need to accelerate

@@mitchmckeiver1429 its cause diesel is short gearing and cause its turbo - max power in the earlist range rpm, thats all. Petrol is atmo. If both had lunch control - petrol would fly away. And ofcourse, all that insane "diesel" torque cause of turbos, not of type fuel

Much more pressure in diesel turbo makes a lot of torque,bcs u have n/a diesel and n/a petrol,petrol would have much more hp,and slightly more torque, that's without turbo,so you know which engine is more powerful!! Ofc same displacement. Only thing, diesels have better mpg

I have Audi A4 B6 1.9 TDI with 367000km on clock, and it does 230km/h. Full stock car, so as this BMW is. Only thing I do is cleaning injectors every 50k, every part in turbo is changed about 40k kms, everything is been opened and cleaned every 50k. But honestly, that is speed shown on cars clock, on navi it is 220-223 max. I went on dyno and made 134ps. Everything is original, no remap, nothing...

Two things. First is the difference in the final ratio and the gearbox. Diesel engines has more torque on the crankshaft, not on the wheels. Second is the difference in the ability of change angular speed. The expansion speed of petrol and air mix during the working phase is much faster than diesel and air mix expansion. But the diesel systems has more torque flexibility. That's why we feel diesel cars accelerating better than petrol ones. Physic and numbers show otherwise.

Hiya out there! As an engineer I must complain: Both vessels were in different states of fuel stock and motor temperature. Unless changed to equal conditions the test is not reliable! Whatever, we all love BMW!!!!

I have the 525i but 6 speed manual and 2.5L, 215bhp. The smoothness in day to day driving is great, very quiet and relaxing. Then when you hit the open road, drop a couple of gears with the 6 speed shifter and spin that 6-cyl up to 7k it just SINGS! 😍 It may not be electrifyingly fast, but the feeling of enjoyment and wellbeing you get driving this car really is excellent, even at nearly 20 years old it still feels like impressive engineering.

@@1dayumay548 The 25i is the choice, especially when you have a naturally aspirated engine with great response and sound. It feels a lot better driving it especially in the city.

All comparisons between petrol and diesel are unfair, petrol car is normally aspirated, diesel car is turbocharged. Should always compare like for like.

100% correct. A 525i should do 0-100 in 8 seconds and 0-160 in 19,5 seconds. The one in the vid needs 7 and 15 seconds. Those are 530i values.

This is not correct physics. More torque at for exaplme 2000RPM means also more power at 2000RPM. Torque x RPM = power . When You accelerate You feel FORCE cousing by engine POWER, not engine torque

@@wyskun i know right, but this is the theory and this should be that way. But in my experience its Like in the comment. Despite the name the 525i hast more hp and plenty enough Torque but in the upper rev range so its quicker. The 525d less hp but makes makes torque earlier kills the acceleration while reving at high speed because no torque left after 3500rpm

wyskun agreed, however high low end torque values result in a strong initial power spike that tapers off. This is what makes it feel quick at first but power drops off dramatically

@@wyskun it's all about turbo...That torque is bcs of turbo,that feel is bcs of turbo,turbo petrols runs on much lower boost,but they are seems quicker than n/a,bcs n/a engines runs smoothly,and build their speed and power gradually...

it seems you are overestimating, I think the maximum is + 40%. Also 6hp21 crit 500Nm, for 600Nm you will need to swap the gearbox.

@@1ncore11 6hp26 which is the gearbox of 525d can handle up to 600nm of torque, also when you are tuning this bmw you also put the bigger turbo from 530d to make it more powerful.

There must be downhill, my f30 328i with 245 hp runs 0-200 is 24 seconds. This heavy 218 hp e60 cant run in 25 seconds.

If you put diesel in his favorite rpm and petrol in his favorite rpm which is like 5k, diesel because of turbo torque would be faster at the beginning but after short period of time petrol will overtake.

Guys, first think: the comparison be twin this engines is unfair, be cause diesel one is turbo and the petrol one is not. Go and compare same size but both engine turbo and you will see how the petrol one beat the diesel by far away. If you will go to compare two engines one diesel and one petrol same size (cc) you will see guys, the diesel engine it will be smoked by the petrol one.
