Great video! Here are my notes of her presentation. 1. Speak from the Diaphragm -Drink water 2. Finish the end of the words -practice by using number -practice pronouncing multisyllabic words by reading newspapers like the New York Times 3. Use strategic pausing -at a PERIOD: pause wait 1, 2, 3 seconds -the way we highlight a word is to use pausing (and tonality) 4. No Ums -No more than 2 speech fillers everyone 2 minutes (speech fillers are: Um, So, Like, You know, So, and Actually ) -Record yourself, notice your pattern of speech (most people say: I’m, UM, John Doe) -Pause instead of using a filler word 5. Own your space (this part of the video was cut short, but the idea is to talk to everyone and not just one person) 6. On the phone -Do not take cut shorts when giving out your phone number 0-0-9-7.) -Do not use “oh’ for 0, use ZERO Big Take Away: HOW we say something matters TWICE as much compared to WHAT we say

Important Clippings: - People who use strong, powerful voices exude self-confidence and volume exudes confidence. It is all about vocal projection, not screaming. It all starts with the diaphragm; this is our power source. How do we make sound? (1) We bring this power up, and (2) moves our vocal cords. - Exercise 1: Sit up tall, take a breath and breath in through your nose. Inhale for the count of 3 and exhale for the count of 5, through your nose. This is also step one of relaxation, just breathe. Exercise 2: Take a breath in and count to 10 on your exhalation. Next to 15 and 20 seconds - Tips when going for a presentation or an interview: - Power up from the diaphragm - Bring water, because: 1.Anxiety will give you cough, which will give you more anxiety 2.When somebody asks you a question. Pause and think. - Exercise 3: Stand up, take a breath, and say A (capital letter A) as long as possible. - For accent reduction, one very common error is that we tend to swallow the ends of words and swallowing entire syllables. Tedious drills are the building blocks that get you to your goal, to get to strong, confident communication. Use strategic pausing, to put emphasis on your message. - When you speak your highlighter is your tone, it shows the vocal variety and the pausing. How we say something matters twice as much as what we say. - Uhm, uh, like, you know, so, actually; these are filler words, any word which is not content rich and not adding. Not more than two in two minutes! - To Do: 1.Record yourself 2.Notice your pattern 3.Anticipation 4.Use the power of the pause, don't use filler words - Other tips: 1.Own your space. Numbers you want to chunk. 2.Don’t take shortcuts 3.Remember it is a global marketplace 4.Respect the listener

@Prodigy_Il

I think context is important. If you're giving a presentation being soft spoken might not be the best, especially if you're in corporate. But talking to people in general it can be very comforting hearing someone being soft spoken. And for the dating space I don't think I'd be wrong to assume most men would prefer a women more soft spoken than someone who's speaking in a powerful tone. Not to say its inherently bad, it goes back to the comforting feeling, it's preferable.

@@Prodigy_Il Above comment is spot on. Context/profession play a big role. For instance a pediatric doctor may not want to use the same tone as business professional presenting a slide deck to board members.

I have been struggling with American English pronunciation from the very beginning I started to study English as a second language many years ago. Sometimes despite the hundred hours studying with teachers, I told meant people, (people who don't tolerate accent) it looks like you have listening accent issues. I found that people who have never travel out America they don't do any effort to try to understand other who doesn't speak English like them. Of course, I know is my pronunciation..... Mrs. Latz has a different approach, physical + logical techniques presented in a clear way, in addition, I love her charisma and passion, she has the unique ability to keep you awake despite the subject.

I really enjoyed your talk. Wow, you blew my mind. As a non-native speaker, I have always tried to copy the linkers and filler words. You made me realize I need to learn the best English possible instead of copying the native ones and their bad habits just to sound like them.

AUM chanting is very helpful! Revibration happens below your navel when you pronounce sound 'A', where the rib cage meets when you pronounce sound "U" and in the pit of the throat when you pronounce "M" sound. These are universal sounds and will help to maintain mental and body health , along with energy body.

Here are the notes- Clarity, Confidence, and Credibility Clarity- There are many times when we have to ask people what’d they just say, when we ask them again and again both ends will start to get frustrated, isn’t it? Have you ever asked someone to repeat something they’ve just said? How many times? 2 times, 3 times? It’s not enough to be just ‘not’ nervous on the stage, it’s important to be ‘confident’ on the stage as well. People with confidence and with greater command over their voice exude confidence. Practical Activities- 1. Inhale for 3 seconds and exhale for 5 seconds. This will help you with your nerves and helps you relax. 2. Take a deep breath and count to 10, this will help you use your breathing projection. 3. Take a deep breath and count to 20. 4. Take a deep breath and say ‘aaaa…’ for as long as you can. Some people think that native speakers don’t have any speaking issues, actually, most of the problems that non-native speakers suffer from are also found in native speakers. Don’t swallow the words! Most of the words only differ in the way they end if you swallow the ending, the meaning may completely be different. Give an example of speaking your mobile number. It’s when you speak the building blocks you will get to speak a perfect speech. Rice Rise Cab Can Sat Sad Wig Wick Mad Mat If you want your message to have power, to have visualization, realize the power of the pause. It’s not difficult to get the concept but to practice. Pause- When we’re reading, we have the luxury to stop and read again, but what about when we’re speaking? So, use 3 different varieties of pauses- 1 Second pauses to make an impact, 2 seconds is a little bit more dramatic, 3 seconds always after a period. “HOW we say something matters twice as much as WHAT we say.” Try and use the least fillers. No Ums -No more than 2 speech fillers everyone 2 minutes (speech fillers are: Um, So, Like, You know, so, and Actually) -Record yourself, notice your pattern of speech (most people say: I’m, UM, John Doe) -Pause instead of using a filler word Here are 4-steps to help you eliminate the usage of filler words. 1. Record yourself. Practice. This will help you understand where at all the spots you’re using maximum fillers, is it just at the beginning or in the middle as well? 2. Variety. Is it just ‘ums’ or you’re using a variety? Um, so, like, you know, and actually) 3. Anticipate. Watch your video where all you were using fillers and then anticipate while recording again. 4. Power of the pause. Now that you know where you’re using filler words, use the 3-type of pauses to avoid fillers. Just pause instead of using filler words. Non-verbal Non-verbal is crucial, own your body, own your space. On the Telephone Be respectful to non-native speakers, don’t take any shortcuts, be slow while you’re sharing any number, and don’t use ‘oh’ as a substitute for zero. Also, don’t say 29-hundred for 2900, it confuses a lot of people.

Some really good information in this presentation. I will definitely watch this about three times to master the content. I use the uums and will now watch out for them and use the pauses more. Also liked the "owning the space" section when seated.
