The American Cancer Society directly and measurably improves the lives of people with cancer and their families by focusing on the core area of patient support. We help people find answers and resources, whether they want to help reduce their cancer risk, understand a cancer diagnosis and treatment options, learn how to manage side effects, or find transportation or a place to stay at our Hope Lodge® communities when treatment is far from home. We work with health care providers, health systems, and public health organizations in the US and globally to reduce barriers for all people across the cancer care continuum, resulting in increased screening and vaccination rates, more effective patient support services, and greater access to treatments and pain relief.
Meet Alena and Amelia - two cancer survivors in California who benefited from our patient support programs and services. Thanks to volunteers like Edd in our Road To Recovery program, Alena had reliable transportation to and from her treatments, which was crucial as she was going through it alone. Through strong partnerships with health systems like Eisenhower Health, Amelia accessed our transportation and lodging grants, ensuring she could attend all her appointments.
Last year in California, we were able to provide:
- 33,000+ requests answered through 24/7 helpline.
- 3,000+ free rides to treatment through Road To Recovery®.
- 6,000+ people served through transportation grants.
- 6,000+ free nights of lodging provided to cancer patients.
- 225,000+ people reached through cancer screening and prevention projects.
The American Cancer Society works to ensure no one feels alone at any point on their cancer journey, from prevention to detection and diagnosis, through treatment and survivorship, and, for some, the end of life. We ensure people impacted by cancer have the support, information, and resources they need, all aimed toward eliminating cancer disparities.
