John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ goes on a field trip to the redwoods retirement center to share with you their garden to show how they have designed their garden to be accessible for wheelchairs and some of the design elements they have used to make gardening easier for active adults who live in this community. After watching this episode you will have a better idea of some ideas you can use to design a accessible garden for physically challenged or active adults.

I'm so glad you came to Mill Valley to showcase this garden. The residents of this community are so active. I know this is way off topic, but they have had residents gather on the corner at noon on Fridays to protest the wars, etc. I think visiting a place where old people still garden is awesome. Thank you, John.

Great video, John! Thank you for caring about the topic and sharing the tips. My mum used to be an avid gardener and I couldn’t figure out why she was giving it all up as she is getting older … well, now I know! Time to redesign the garden to fit her needs better. Thanks again!❤

I like how the lanes are wide and there is overhang on the beds which makes them wheelchair accessible. As a nurse, I have worked with a lot of seniors and when I visit their homes, one of the things that they miss the most is being able to work in the garden in the summer....Thanks for the ideas! I have a great video now to refer family members for assisting their loved ones with quality of life.

This is amazing John, my husband is an activity coordinator at a seniors home. I use to be the cook but quit because I didn't believe in the food I was made to give them=( Anyway we wanted to introduce a food garden for the residents, to promote better health and education. He has done juicing programs with them and they loved it!!! Thanks again for all your amazing videos. =)

Thank you so much for this video. My grandmother has been wanting more fresh produce, but can't make it to the store all the time. So I have planed to build a garden for her, so that she can just step out her front door and harvest some fresh food out of her garden.

John, you are my mirror on the opposite side of blue planet, I love your work. I have a raised bed currently, and you say this is for "seniors" its also for juniors...i have a 2 year old and i see that its perfect for her to have the best view (its actually a magikal perspective for wee ones) and all at hand height.Im telling everyone about your tubes John...you my favourite planetary guy currently xx

This is a beautiful place.Yes, SENIOR is fine with me too. I earned the title. Great video, John. When I can no longer keep up my property, I sure hope I can afford a place like this to live. California is out of the question, Wisconsin is home.Shorter growing season will be fine with me. Just give me a lot of windows so I can view the BEAUTIFUL snowy landscape & be warm & cozy inside while looking out. I am now DEFINITELY thinking Spring, under several newly fallen inches of SNOW. Smiles, Lark

John...One of the best videos I have seen with ideas for seniors. As someone who is having to consider how to be able to keep gardening and someone who is forever encouraging others to garden no matter what their ability level I want to say THANKS! Love your videos.

One of the best ideas I've come across is twinning a retirement home with a children's nursery. That way, the 'active adults' can pass their knowledge on and young children love the one-to-one attention - both benefit immensely. It seems to me that a shared edible garden project is perfect for bringing together the generations.

Thanks for your video. I can relate to the video because i'm disable. i'm in a wheelchair and i do my gardening with 2 raiesed bed in my balcony and on tables I also have a big cement raised bed outside but i need to fix some issue with it. I also have another raised bed in front of the house. all the gardening is centered around my needs. I love it because i feel that i am bringing fresh food for the family.

Quite a setup, these people probably get tremendous enjoyment out of all of it, let alone the finished plate. My neighbors use dollies for all their plants, they move them into the garage. they had a beautiful sheathed garden behind the garage but th e local deer got through and vertical jumped everything. The turn over on their mulch bin was slow and low because it;s pressed directly behind the garage and in full constant shade due to the angle. We're moving it this year to a better spot. PeaCe

Good video, learned a lot. I'm growing that "Flash Lettuce" with my middle school garden club and I keep taking photos of it because the colors are amazing. My folks still garden and their in their 70's and 80's, they've just toned it down a bit, more roses now. It's Contra Costa so everything needs to be deer repellent, so to speak. Loved some of these ideas though.

John - this may not be something you care about, but...last year I had tremendous success growing tomatoes & peppers in upside-down containers, in particular the Topsy Turvey planters. While these may not appeal to "true gardeners" I don't mind the "cheat." What I wanted to mention is right now (2/1/13) Big Lots a discount retailer has both the TT tomato and strawberry planters on sale for $1.50 - yeah, a buck and a half. We bought 20 just to have extras. Thought some folks might like to know

It is really a great and brilliant ideas indeed. Otherwise, creating an access for the seniors who are apparently enthusiast in growing vegetables despite of their age are worth interesting. Nice information!

I think he is just trying to be detailed and do not want to miss anything, that's why I like his channel instead of some other channels where it just plays music and show things grow without going in to detail on how to grow it.

yes! another great episode! Thanks for all your devotion! I wanted to know what the wood was that is used for most of the building in this video? for the raised beds and the trelisis? i use unfinished cedar at home and want to know if it would be good enough to use like this video shows? i like the edges of the beds to sit on and to sit tools, bowls or buckets on while tending the garden. thanks, melissa-

Thanks John. I think waist high beds are good, easy, and efficient for anyone not just seniors. @John, I plan to grow a lot of heir loom tomatoes and peppers(30 plants and more) but have very limited space. Should I grow them in 5 gallon containers in rows or build large raise beds? Also my lot is a bit sloopy and not level.

As for the 'Cold Frame' being used to STORE garden supplies, understand that as you grow OLDER your appetite DIMINISHES! So over time, the Elderly are going to grow LESS not necessarily because they haven't made their gardening systems EASY for themselves but because they actually EAT LESS than they did when they were young. (Self included, lol!)

Hey John, I really like your videos about gardening and raised beds. I have a question, I thinking about starting raised beds. I have the ground tilled and once I have it leveled out, should I lay down black plastic or just cover the ground with 1/3 compost, vermic., and coconut husk mix you mentioned?

I have but one complaint John. I hear you say growingyourgreens (dot) com every time, but it only leads to your youtube. No real site so to speak. lol it's not really a true complaint just something that makes me chuckle. If I have too I'll design a website for you an make a honest man of you. (Note that I'm just picking. In reality I'd say you seem to be one of the most honest of people on here.) Anyways I have some carrots to get into the ground for my 3rd season. Keep up the good work.

Cont:I have a dear friend that works at a retirement community, and in the past I've helped this person set up elaborate props, and decorations for Thanks Giving,Christmas (Winter Holiday"),and New Years.New owners bought the place, hired new heads, and they cut out most of their budget for stuff like this so the owners can make more profit. This is EVIL. I would love to volunteer and build gardens for people in retirement homes. The owners take the old folks money and spend it the way they want.

This is AWESOME ! Most retirement communities are corrupt IMO.Their goals are to take the old folks money, and try and get away with the least as possible in things that keep these residents healthy and happy.I know from personal experience. The head of the retirement homes get a HUGE salary, drive expensive cars, and have their staffs make them look good when the state comes in to do their regular inspections.Twinning Village Manor,Holland,Pa.is a prime example of screwing over their residents.FACT

If they're living in a retirement home, they are probably senior citizens, so why call them "active adults"? I'm a senior, and I don't mind being called that, it's just my reality. Otherwise, thanks for a great post, John.

I've been trying to figure out why I keep wanting to watch your videos but always get fatigued and turn you off. I've concluded it's because you're too loud and you come across with a Tool TIme or "Billy Mays" kind of over amped presentation. I wish you spoke more softly and calmed down a bit.
