what im saying lmao, i kept thinking "That just seems so extra, isn't a natural just a regular note. Why there gotta be extra steps?" and this one measure rule answered my question that two previous videos for some reason didn't mention

This is great! Really glad you didn't mention anything about key signatures in here. You'd be surprised how many music educators erroneously refer to key signature sharps/flats as "accidentals." "Accidentals" only refer to notes that are OUTSIDE of your given key signature ("one measure rule" sharps and flats). But the sharps/flats that are in the key signature are sharp/flat by default. For example, if you're in the key of G Major, F# is NOT considered an "accidental" because it is one of the default notes of the G Major scale. F natural, however, WOULD be considered an accidental, as you need to use a natural sign to lower F# back down to F.

These videos are incredibly helpful because i joined band class with little to no knowledge of music. Why you ask? Because i didn't wanna do PE, sue me. How i survived this long without actually knowing how to read music properly is a mystery to me and honestly a miracle. I thank you for this useful information and hope your pillow is always cold during summer and blanket always warm in winter.

1. **Accidentals:** - *Definition:* Accidentals are symbols in music notation that alter the pitch of a note. - *Types:* - **Sharp (♯):** Raises the pitch of a note by a half step. - **Flat (♭):** Lowers the pitch of a note by a half step. - **Natural (♮):** Cancels the effect of a sharp or flat. 2. **Use of Accidentals:** - *Key Signature:* Accidentals appear in the key signature to establish the tonal framework of a piece. - *Within Measures:* Accidentals can be used within measures to temporarily alter the pitch of specific notes. 3. **Key Signatures:** - *Definition:* Key signatures indicate the key of a piece and specify which notes are to be consistently played as sharp or flat. - *Relationship with Accidentals:* Key signatures and accidentals work together to define the tonality of a composition. 4. **Enharmonics:** - *Definition:* Enharmonic equivalents are two notes that sound the same but are written differently (e.g., F♯ and G♭). - *Accidentals in Enharmonics:* Accidentals are essential in understanding and notating enharmonic relationships. 5. **Double Sharps and Double Flats:** - *Occurrence:* In some cases, a note may be raised or lowered by two half steps, requiring a double sharp (𝄪) or double flat (𝄫). - *Uncommon Usage:* Double accidentals are relatively rare but are used in specific musical contexts.

So.. if the key signature is written on the beginning of the staff, would you use the natural to indicate that that note isn't sharp or flat? If so, would the one measure rule apply to keeping that note natural for the rest of that measure?
@thementozone

Yes and yes, the natural note would apply due to the one measure rule

I remember something about if a line is going up you use sharps and if the line is going down you use flats. It that a thing? I very rarely write out my music in notation anymore but I have to for a project I'm doing.
@thementozone
@thementozone 9 ай бұрын
In most cases this is definitely true! Especially if the line is functioning as a melody. If it is functioning as a harmony, there are cases where it is descending and also flat though.

If there is a sharp A, then a natural A, will the next A be sharp or natural? Basically, does a natural cancel a previous sharp or flat's one measure rule?

What if youre playing key lets say Ab. Youre asked to play Enat. and later in that same mesure it says to play Eb. Is it Eb thats “natural” to the key or is it like Ebb/Dnat.
@PianistTanooki
@PianistTanooki 2 ай бұрын
If I'm understanding you correctly, the answer is no. The natural sign was only canceling out one flat in the key signature, not two. Therefore the Eb that you saw later was only asking you to undo the natural sign and make it an Eb again.
